Tube Head -> Combo Cab

i seek the help of you subject gurus. I just got a Peavey VTM 120 all tube amplifier and I want to run it into my Peavey Stereo Chorus Combo. My question is... exactly how do I do this? I see there's 2 power amp input jacks on the back of the combo. I looked up the manual to my combo amp and the description says "used to connect line level signal to the power amplifier." Is this how I do it? I have no idea what line level signal is...I just play guitar :P Also, I have multiple outputs on the back of the head for different ohms. Again, I looked in the manual for the combo amp and it says under power section "150w into 4 ohms/seperately." Does that mean I should supply the 4ohm output on the back of the head? Can someone supply me information on how I would sync up a head with a combo amp (using just the speakers). Thanks Much!

I think you have to completely bypass the combo amp's pre and power amp, so it works solely as a cabinet. How to do this I don't know, but would probably involve cracking open and rewiring your amp. If I were you I'd just sell the combo and get a cabinet.

one way is to hook a cord from pre-amp out on the head to the power amp in on the combo. this way you'll get the pre-sound from the vtm and the power sectionfrom the chorus. or you can take the cord that the speakers plug into on the back of the combo and plug that into the 4 ohm output jack on your vtm. if it wont reach (ive tried this on my combos) you have to extend it somehow. sell the combo and get a cab.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know if you could just put a plug onto the speakers like that. I guess that's what a cab is, but it didn't dawn on me the only thing you really need is the proper ohms jack.

Now another question I have, the output on the tube head has 4 - 16 ohm output jacks. Now, should I/could I just hook both speakers up to one 8ohm jack? Are speakers in 16ohm increments? Is this how a cab is setup? Do they have 1 4ohm jack to cover all 4 16ohm speakers? Really, it's all new to me. Also, I'm wanting to keep the combo for backup/practice purposes and just get get a cab also.

You will have the unplug the speakers of the combo and hook the speakers up to your vtm. dont ever have an amp on without any load attached to it, so therefor dont even try to turn the combo on, it doesn't need any current as you are only going to use the speakers..

Is the speakers hooked up to your combo thru a tele jack into one of the speaker outputs? If so, what ohm rating does it say? PLug the tele jack into the same ohm rating on your VTM

If I'm understanding you correctly, the speakers are just wired in to the head of the combo somewhere, there's not an actual speaker jack. Just input, pre, and power. What is a tele jack? The VTM has 4 outputs each 16ohm.

Hmm.. The jack in your guitar where you connect a cable is a tele-jack because it has a tele connection, and the cable you put in the jack has a tele plug .. tele is a name for one of many different kinds of connections, and the most encountered one if you are playing guitar..

I asked because many tube combos I've seen has had these jacks where you connect the speakers..

You should be able to buy a tele plug and solder your speaker cables (they are most likely plugged into something insidie your combo, just take them of) to that plug, and then connect the tele plug into one of your, exactly how on the tele plug it should be soldered, I can't tell because I dont know.. And be sure to know how many ohms resistance the speakers will make.. one does not want to mis match impedances in a tube poweramp..

Personaly, I just think you should invest in a cab. will make life easier
