Skateboarding
I wondered if anyone is into it at all?
Some of my friends skate and shit so I decided I could try it. I tried when I was younger and I was like no way fuck this but I can play guitar these days which makes me think I can learn to skate aswell. I can't wait to get like a board and shit I'm pretty excited. My mates will teach me. ]
I've always enjoyed watching skating and skate videos with them and shit and I think it's a cool hobby so far.
So what about other peoples interest in it and please there is no need for Skating sucks, no noone skateboards here bla bla [although now that I said it someone will I know]
I searched and there was a skate thread but it was closed it was pretty old so yeah.

I skated for like 4-5 years, i fuckin loved it.
All my mates were into it, and we would go on big missions and shit. We all got pretty good too. Then everyone kinda just stopped, and I did aswell.
I had so much fun though, some of the best times of my life.
Its fucked up learning co-ordination to ollie. Once you master an ollie and balance, all other tricks are really built off that.
I never really got that good at kickflips and whatnot, but I had a fuckin massive ollie and nollie, and i could crooked grind like fuckin crazy, on anything.
Its a shame i stopped really, but i guess a lot of the push to advance is with bein with friends.

I'm skating for 10 years now and I still love it and skate everyday. I'm being sponsored by a little local skateshop.

Dont skate mongo.
Ie. If you are right-handed, usually you would stand with your left foot planted at the front of the board and push with your right (rear) leg. If you plant your right foot and push with your front foot, this is mongo, and very very gay.
When you are pushing, usually your left foot will be almost point straight ahead, with the tip of your foot at the hardware (screws). Then when you have finished pushing, you pivot that foot aroudn and stand paralelle to the board.
Just practise skating for a start, get confidant, and then you can get into practising ollies. Which are probably the most fucking hard thing to explain how to do. Maybe download an instructional video when you get to that point.

Chocolate decks are a good bang for your buck.trucks you can't go wrong with some tensors. wheels are just a preference of size. I always have spitfire wheels. and bearings. I always have the bones super six balls. their pretty expensive ( But hey, I get them for free ) but are amazingly good.
If you want some less expensive bearings with good quality try some black panthers. Shoes are important too.

I love watching guys on skateboards....very much.
Kona skatepark was just blocks from my house where I grew up and was a huge complex. Had tons of half and quarter pipes. A giant bowl in the ground and several long slolom (sp?) runs.

I agree, Tensor's rule. I have Thunder trucks at the moment and they're good too. About bearings, don't buy abec 7 because they're crappy. They broke in few days. Abec 5 are good. When you buy shoes, make sure they have a good grip. I'd recommend circa and és.

Ah. My skate days. I was never really good, and when I started getting better, I took 2 hard spills in one day, and I developed this small hint of fear when I was trying to do stuff, so I just sort of stopped trying.
I used to get Zero decks, tensor trucks, and usually any wheels I felt like. I'm still into it, and I'm gonna give it a go again when the weather warms up.

the abec rating on a bearing doesn't say shit. The abec rating indicates how much rpm the bearing can take without falling apart. And I guess you wont go 50.000 rpm . you won't notice any different between abec 3,5,7. It's more the weight of the bearing and how many roller balls are inside of it that makes a good bearing. And brands are important too ofcourse. a abec 7 bearing from bones is better constructed than one from some unknown brand of course

Actually, thats kinda untrue. Abec 3 - 7 you will notice a massive difference. Usually, if your shopping for bearings and going high end, higher abec ratings run smoother as well.

I had my first skateboard was I was six..didn't start again until I was 14. I don't really skate much anymore, every once and awhile. Mainly because all my friends quit(no one to skate with), cars(for transportation), our shitty climate and the fact that you need a helmet to skate in the streets.
Good brands I've had.
Decks - All Tum Yeto decks(zero, foundation, toy machine)
Trucks - Destructo, Tensor, Grind King, Independent(too heavy for me)
Risers - Yes I've always used there really..prevents stress cracks.
Bearings - Bone's China red's...get these, if you are rich get the ceramics..but the china's are great.
Hardware - Short's Silvarado, simply because they are durable and you put the too silver bolts at the nose.
Wheels - don't really matter..mainly I've either had Pig or Spitfire..mostly spitfire..A size you like is good too..I've have everything from 58.5mm to 52s..and I just checked my newest skateboard are they are 52mm.
I used to be obsessed with old school skateboarding..I even have a complete '86 Vision Mark "The Gator" Rogowski who was later charged with the brutal murder of his girlfriend! You should see the griptape art!

Yip i had tensor lo's, though wanted to get mids. A lot of my mates used Royal trucks. My Destructo's lasted me years, but tensors own. They have the switchable plate on the front for like nose/tailslides, so your trucks dont get so ground down.
Wheels, i usually just got blanks, sided 50mm. Small wheels own. I had 48mm Alien Workshop wheels but they wore down and go tooo small.
As for decks, there are cheaper brands which have pretty good boards. Not sure if its international, but Hardcore boards were propular here. I Skated on Monkey Stix, New Deal, AWS all good boards, a lot of them are made in the same factory and are oretty much the same thing. I would stay away from Blinds, though i only have one experience with them, my board fuckin chipped like nothing else.
Bearings, usually got cheap ones and replaced them every month or two. SKF and Irrom (i think is new zealand). Black Panthers always looked good to me, but were like 2-3 times more expensive than the cheaper bearings,
Hardware - Get Nutlocks. I had the same hardware the whole time i skated. And they are sooo much easier to use when taking off or putting on trucks.

There's nothing like watching some friends of yours wipe out trying to do something beyond their skills. Except maybe seeing Dissection wipe out. Damn my eyes for missing that.
If possible, you might want to just coast on your mates' boards until you have some stuff on your own. Or go to a college dormitory and walk around; you're bound to find a skateboard that's ripe for stealing. That about ends the advice I can give. Stealing is absolutely key, though.

Its really a part of being a 'cool' 'skatie'. That and chain wallets, baggy jeans and ripoff labled clothing
My friend and I were the only 2 metalhead skaters i knew of. All the rest are Punk or Hiphop.

fuck that, i hate people who steal, and every single person hates getting things stolen from them. show some respect for peoples property. i hope you dont think stealing is key in music as well.
anyway, i skated for 4-5 years. had lots of vidoes. favorites were Zero: misled youth, and dying to live, Black label: label kills, Birdhouse: the end, and various other ones. i used strictly Krux trucks, spitfire wheels, and lucky bearings. i went through various deck brands. i talked about this in a thread recently, oh well. i used black label, darkster, element. i was better at grinds than any of my friends. i was a little more technical, but went as big as the friends would go as well. i guess the "biggest" thing i did was kickflip a long 8 stair. i quit soon after i started getting handrials, and soon after i started playing guitar. i still wear globe shoes, and have been for the past 4 years. i think i quit 2 years ago.

I'm still skateboarding on the same board I've had since I was in 3rd grade. You just can't beat a 19.99 skateboard from K-Mart. Its a fun sport, but I like snowboarding since it doesn't require tons of hardwork to learn how to ollie or do other tricks.

Also....BUY A MULTI FUNCTION SKATE TOOL...I fucking hate when guys had boards stiff as my dick.(very stiff.)
TD - Kickflip 8 stairs?? fuck that shit! I'm too much of a pussy..i've hurt myself enough skateboarding without trying to do shit like that.
Now that I think of it I basically quit because Im a smoker and I used to smoke a shitload of weed..weed makes you motivation to try tricks as well as it tires you out quick.
Skateboarding drunk is where it's at however.

oh man, those games are like 10x more interesting when you are, or were a decently experienced skateboarder. its like you can do all the things you couldnt do or wouldnt try on an actual skateboarder.
EDIT:

heh, hey man, after 4 years, it just gets to that point. i was a pretty innovative skater in some areas. when me and my friends would skate, i was always "the first one" to try a gap or rail. shit, ever crooked grinded a knee high box off the top of a loading dock? great stuff.
skating drunk is crazy

No...lol, the only "grinds" I could do were fs/bs boardslides, 5050, 5-0 and noseslides..the basics really.
I used to make up a lot of moves based off old school street tricks.(Blind Video Days..forget some of the other ones...Mark Gonzales! Steve Cabellero!)

im more into bmx riding, i was better at tricks when i was 14 than now. but in the warm season i regularly ride, this is what keeps me relatively in shape. cruising on a bmx on a warm summer night, bombing hills, beating cars thru lights is a part of my life, im doing it till my legs dont work anymore
owned a mongoose decade 1987 up until 4 years ago, i left this bike at a restaurant<heavy rain, so i caught a ride> i used to work at, inside the place with the lock and key next to it. next morning the boss brings it outside and puts in on a bike rack without locking it, gone in 10 minutes.............................i bought this bike in the year 1987, it was the first fucking thing i ever bought. its not worth anything, its just like owning an old powell parelta board or a santa cruz, novelty, nostalgia, etc. i owned this bike longer than i played drums, cherished it more than any drumset
but now i have an even older mongoose frame a friend kicked down, this one goes back to the motor cross racing style bikes, early 80's, again its kinda small, small tubes and easy to fold, fuck up etc. not worth anything, but its gonna look so good when i get it up and running

I used to skate (badly), I only remember having a Chocolate board, Lucky 7 bearings, Spitfire wheels and trucks with a "V" on them.
I prefer BMX'ing though, much more versatile, and all weather.

skating and bmx riding isnt what it used to, and i know this is cliche' to say and people were saying the same shit when i was young.
the whole skate park thing didnt exist when i was younger, and this was when skating hit mainstream in the 80's, im talking skate movies and video games that came along with the surfing revival from the 60s and 70s. i think towns and cities made those parks so they could illegalize it anywhere else. stiff fines and real enforcement. that is a complete shame because its funner riding thru the city and going thru traffic and any natural obstacle that came along. i mean, you know, that was the point, thats what made it big in the first place. i dont see anyone skating in the city anymore, i rarely see older kids from my generation bomb hills at 4-5am anymore, the younger kids seem like brats. kids nowadays will drive to the "skate park" spend the day trying to land one move and drive home. the shit is a fucking hobby and not a means of transportation, which coincidentally was the point. skate parks are like indian reservations, ya'll got duped.
at least with the bmx its a little better, but far less people are into it.

backside Smith's own. That and backside lipslides. Actually, backside everything owns frontside everything, except boardslides. Frontside boards are hella cool, or frontside crooked grinds are fuckin heaps harder than bs ones.
I feel like skating now

Ok its fucked, u should really get a video.
But basically, you jump but kick down on the tail of the board (popping). At the same time you have to co-ordinate your front foot to slide up toward the nose of the board. This evens the board out from being like / to being -- straight. Its a really fucked thing to explain so try get sdome of your buds to have a go at showing you. Its a fuckin hard thing to master.

for some reason seeing "kickflip" there brought back memory. i was at a local skatepark one time, having an ok day. i decided to kickflip off the top of the halfpipe to the flat ground, seeing as it was the highest drop in the little park. it was an 8 foot drop, which didnt really scare me, but i had a narrow runway. i tried for a while, got close, but one time i landed with my foot sideways . now that fuckin hurt. nothing broke, but i couldnt walk for hours. i crawled under the ramp and smoked a few bowls. the next day my foot started getting dark purple, not my whole foot, but a lot of it. looked pretty damn crazy and took a long ass time to heal. that brings the thread to a good topic, skateboarding injuries .

hah, a rake
that was so long ago, i cant really remember learning at that point. i remember having trouble getting over another board though. haha, one time, when i was still learning, i was trying to ollie over two stacked boards. i went up to it and popped, my back wheels hit the top board and somehow i flew back. i actually landed on the board on my back!!! i was still rolling too. so i rolled away as if i were on a luge. the highest stack of boards i ever got over was 5. you know, where you stack them on their sides. pretty common measurement of how high you can ollie around here anyway.
i never split my finger, but ive landed flat on my back a couple of times. hahaha. heres one. we set up some ply wood about 8 feet away from the driveway. so the object was to make it over the grass, to the wood. i went super fuckin fast, but didnt make it. my back truck got caught on the lip of the wood and it stuck there. i, however, flew completely over the board, which was another 8 feet, and slid oh another six feet on the grass. i slid on my back, so i was just laying there staring up at the sky after it all happened.

Yeah guys whats up, been skating for 6 years now, But its kinda funny, cause im 6"4' and look very unproportional.
Anyway funny shit happened to me.
Ok so down here in Aus the biggest Vert ramp in the southern hemisphere was built (it's 15 1/2 feet, i believe), so me being the lanky dumbass I tried to drop in.
1st time... BANG.
2nd time... FUCKING BANG!
I thought I broke my arm. It fucking hurt so bad. So off to the hospital 4 hours later X-Rays turn up nothing. Can still play guitar.
Week Later (today) decided to go for a skate. Ok. Boardslide small handrail. Stack on arm. HOLY FUCK THE PAIN.
I lay there, moaning like a fucking dumbass, for 15 minutes, in the middle of a populated skatepark. Ahhh, the joys of skateboarding.
This may seem like a negative post but would I continue if I didnt love it?
...Well I dont really like the Monster Vert ramp but still...

yeah, vert ramps are tough, but once you get them down they are easier than street. and actually my whole point here, vert is boring. street kicks vert's ass anyday. i dont know how many times, as a kid, id turn on the x-games to see the skateboarding even, and it would be lame ass vert. street is cooler to watch, and better to do.
this isnt a bail, but a freak landing. one time me and this other guy connected my three rails into one very long one. it was a very strange combination if you had seen it. first was the round rail (8ft), then it was the double plastic pipe one (10ft), then it was the square one (6ft), pretty long fuckin ways. they were all different heights but we managed to make them level, and sturdy, with bricks. again, i was really good at grinds so i knew id have no trouble. i went for it and made it fine untill the end, i got of balance. i started leaning back but i was right at the end. i jumped up to try and get off the board but for some crazy reason my heel caught the nose and spun the board in a PERFECT heelflip. i didnt catch the flip in the air or anything, so much for style, but i did land directly over the truck bolts. i couldnt do that if id tried, not of a rail anyway.

haha. place your front foot a little off the board. Do a sort of ollie motion but you gotta kick your front foot off to the top side... Have you centre of gravity directly over the board and jump high enough to make sure the board fully rotates. Catch it right sie up and land.
Its hard to explain, you should look up trick tips on the net.

Yeah, you basically just shoot your foot up and out, dragging the side of your foot on the board. With the basic ollie motion like problematic said. You can try searching some videos on youtube.com if you want to see someone do a trick. It comes in handy.

Yeha man.
Bastian Salabanzi fucking owns. I got the Flip vid and that cunt is like 15-16 in the footage, already defined the best street skater in the fucking world. He is fucking amazing.
I had the honour to see him when the es' (i think) team came over here and did a demo. I think thats what made the skating scene start to die, everyone in my country realised how much they suck!

haha, skateboarding injuries..Our board bounching off its tail, nose into your nuts...hurts..a lot..
One time I was skating after school as a basketball court which my friends and I had converted into "skatepark"..when I was done I was walking up hill back to my house and this guy stops his car..and hes freaking out yelling "Are you ok?? Want me to call 911?!"....I had a buzzed head and lipstick was all over it for some school assignment...the fucking guy thought I had serious head wounds. lol
I didn't get hurt too bad...SEVERAL spained ankles/wrist, SEVERAL bloody knees, SEVERAL brusies hips/palms(at one point my left palm had a swell for about a year), and a ruptured right pinky joint for trying a ollie to indy grab on street...the board smashed into my hand.
Skateboarding is painful.

I disagree. Bastien Salabanzi is a very, very technical skater, but I wouldn't immediately dismiss him as being 'the best'. I don't see him frontside flipping 17 like A. Reynolds did. Im not saying Andrew Reynolds is the best, But im just saying he has a different style.
His full Cab kickflips are ridiculous, and 270 front boards also are so meh... But in skating I prefer the fucking gnarly shit, Ill atke a Zero video (have all ) over a Flip vid anyday.
Just My opinion.

For any skaters looking to pick up some sort of video to start off, try The First Step. It's got really basic stuff in there, but not too much explanation. In it they explain how starting off trying to ollie on grass is good for beginners. I got into skating for quite a while, but that was a while ago. Whenever I do feel like picking up a skateboard, I have a really tiny set of tricks to choose from: Fakie/normal Shove-it,kickflip, 180, and then just flipping and jumping over stuff. Man, when I first nailed a kickflip, I had the great feeling of accomplishment accompanied by a million bruises on my legs. What's cool is I have a friend who is incredible at guitar and also likes to skate, so that's works pretty well.

Its an awesome feeling of accomplishment when you nail something awesome.
I lost my two front teeth learning to kickflip
Broke a toe too. I consider myself fucking lucky with how little injuries i actually got though.

His full Cab kickflips are ridiculous, and 270 front boards also are so meh... But in skating I prefer the fucking gnarly shit, Ill atke a Zero video (have all ) over a Flip vid anyday.
Just My opinion.

Yeah i dont really consider him the best, but at the time that was the word going around. 'Sorry' fucking amazed me by FLIP.
But yea, zero always had an amazing team

Some people take some nasty spills, I know, and I feel lucky that I never broke anything while skating. Maybe I just have good balance and such. Or maybe I'm not just not X-TREME ENOUGH, I gotta go do a 360 Flip over a Semi, see y'all later!
If anybody has some quick videos of themselves or just parts of promos, you should post them here. I have nothing, except for searches on google video.

ive only got my old skating recordings on tape . i would have gladly posted them. i never broke anything either, just fucked my ankle once. ive gone pretty big, but not professional level or anything. i just remembered a time when i found a sidewalk aside a loading dock. it was an average sidewalk, 3-4 feet wide. got some speed, popped over the sidewalk, landed in the dock. loading docks are great for skating.

VERY. But unfortunantly one near my house (tidy ledges with metal coating) I can't skate anymore since I got rolled by asain gangsters.
Shit happens.
I might post some clips of myself. My friend tapes us, on a vid / dig video camera, But im not sure if he has any vids on computer.
I would post myself grinding a 10 set ledge... very low, about 10 cm, a tiny pop, but a big fucking drop at the end. Its also funny because Im 6"4' and look so fucking massive on my board.
Any Syndey skaters get into contact!

Ive been skating for a while now, Ive been skating longer than Ive been playing guitar, I fucking love it. just wish I found this thread sooner, haha. Ive taken some pretty bogus bails, hit my head of numerous sets and walls. Ive been skating street for a looong time but I wanna get into shredding bowls and mini ramps. How long has everyone here been skating? Whats YOUR favorite skate video(s)??

I've always wanted to skateboard...but didn't want to risk breaking a finger/wrist/hand/arm/shoulder.....than I couldn't play guitar. That...would suck.

Ive been skating for 6 but haven't progressed much. Im lazy and im contemplating quitting since its yr11 and all i do is study / play guitar.
My friends want to drag me out tomorrow, ill probably go.
It sucks now because one of our friends dislocated his knee and can't skate until April next year. It sucks skating without him... none of us are amped much anymore.

Nice to see, and were I a bit more ego centered I'd see some kind of symbolism in this.
One of my teachers and a bunch of other teachers/proffessionals is having an open dance floor for breakers in the city of Malmö, right next to the so called skate park; a monumental structure in concrete, covering an area of 2500 square meters. So what could be more natural than taking a break and learn the roalling board secrets - I just had my first try two days ago. Flat open ground, any day.

Im real dissappointed to hear so many of you gave up skateboarding for guitar! I mean, I love guitar and if it came down to it Id probably play guitar over skate, But I dont see why you would want to quit skateboarding???!! I get such a rush out of it, plus it keeps me busy so I dont smoke so much pot and kill my lungs

That's really good..that's probably 95% of the reason my friends and I call stopped when we did.

I skateboarded for about 5 years but havent for a long time. The whole family and career thing kind of ruined it for me. It would be sorta weird skateboarding and falling in my own driveway with the neighbours staring at me hahah
i feel old.... :P
