i know theres loads of stuff about screaming on here..but i wanna no can anybody scream or is it a case of some people just don't have the right stuff cause i need to scream and i can't bloody do it. i go for a scream n my throat closes up. sometimes ive got what sounds like a scream for about a second ( even though im not bursting any blood vessels doin it like i thought i should be) n then i start making funny noises..damn frustrating..is it a case of keep trying n i'll get there..i hope so

I think if you're screaming with good technique (lol), you shouldn't actually be hurting yourself at all.

i cant be doing it right cause its not happening..

From personal experience, whatever your scream is, that's your scream. I've worked at screaming for the longest time, and only a few members here on metaltabs are so unfortunate as to have heard them without effects and whatnot. But as for growls, the playing field is fair in the sense that you can practice for whatever you want.

And I want to reitterate : If your throat hurts, then you're doing something wrong. The reason is that you won't be able to sustain it over thirty minutes with an actual band if your throat's giving out after five minutes.

You do have a voice box right?

well i aint no doctor but im guessing the voice box is still there yeah..just getting it to to do what i want is a stumbling block,,i hear the note in my head, i go for it n the instant i try my throat closes up n i make a dull flat noise with no resemblence to a scream at all..

I was the lead singer of a metal band for over a year, it's all in the gut(not throat), drink lots of water and try not to smoke too much.

now now!! no arguing on my thread please..he didnt have any positive advice so resorted to spouting crap..its ok..ive enough good advice from all the other nice people who did contribute to what one person may think garbage but to me was my own little battle that i needed some help with..thanks to all who did give good advice..n stick with ya guitar playin to all who didnt!!

Being able to sing clean helps quite a few miles along the road to screams and all the other fun things to do with your voice that metal has given us.
"Being able to sing clean" i.e. knowing the techniques of it. The problem you are describing sounds pretty much like you are trying to it with your throat instead of your whole air system. A sneeze contains all the stopping power of a hurricane, so it's in there. I will however refrain from taking more space on the forum till you have had the chance to tell us that you've sung lead parts in the school choir for three years. Or something.

the school choir was a few years ago..quite a few..but i think ive got a good clean singing voice with quite a bit of charactor to it..its quite powerful as well and ur right i think i am trying to do it from the throat but im not sure how to get such a high pitch without doing it from there...i figured it was almost a falcetto type of thing..(probably going to get slated for that)

as for the person who said whatever your scream is, thats your scream

i disagree

im not a vocalist, but i can emulate alot of different screamers/growls if i take the time to learn their scream

As others have mentioned both here and in the 9 bazillion other screaming threads, using your airways is a must. Thats where voice lessons (even if you never intend on singing cleanly) will help. In voice lessons you will learn to breath properly as well as manipulate your sound and whatnot.

I've only ever done it twice.

Bit of advice dude. Screaming sounds different through a microphone behind a band then it does sitting in your room while your neighbours are thinking you are being bruttaly murdered.

Besides. Screams are a bit slipknoty. Practise gutterals and screeches.
