Quick question on left hand technique...
OK, I can play fairly decently at higher speeds, but after watching both Jeff Loomis play and Petrucci's Rock Discipline, I am starting to question my technique. When I play fast licks using only my first three fingers, my fourth doesn't stay curled and parallel with the fretboard (somewhat) like Petrucci and Loomis do. Is this just something that differs with each guitarist, or is this a problem area that I should target immediately? I prefer using 3 fingers for fast licks that stay within a 4 fret area. If I'm not clear on what the problem is please let me know.
And also, in the finger stretch excercises in Rock Discipline, could someone please post how I should go about strengthening and increasing the flexibility in my ring finger? I have trouble keeping all my fingers down whilst switching between the below figures:
Code:
|--6--| |--6--|
|--7--| |--8--|
|--8--| |--7--|
|--9--| to |--9--| I have a difficult time switching from the first fingering
|-----| |-----| to the second without lifting a couple fingers from the
|-----| |-----| fretboard
