Can't get used to strats?
I just sold my Ironbird and grabbed a Jackson Dinky DXMG with an original Floyd... It kicks ass and everything, stays in tune well and has incredibly low action, but after playing it for several hours I've determined I simply can't get used to the playing position for strats, I've tried all sorts of angles and strap heights and I still can't get used to it.
So I think I'm going to sell my DXMG. Perhaps someone is interested. I'm throwing in a tweed hardshell case, some strings and straplocks. It's a great guitar but it just doesn't feel right for me. Maybe now I'll learn to try out guitars before buying them. I'm selling this and getting a fixed-bridge Jackson KVX10 cause I don't use the Floyd all that much, and I just can't get used to the body shape.
Anyone interested? It's black and has some scratches but it looks fine and plays extremely well, I just can't get used to it. Has EMG-HZ's and I just set up the Floyd in D with DM 52-11's. If anyone's interested PM me some offers, shipping is like 35$.
Anyone else have trouble adjusting to strat shapes?

Tried everything man, I guess strats are not for me. I don't find them comfortable. I'm selling it(I made a thread in the classifieds) so go take a look.

Hmmm...
I have a cheapy strat...
Finding a comfortable position has never been a prob sitting or standing.
I just hate switching from a nice thick neck (LP) to a strats thin neck.....always feels odd.

well the quality of the guitar doesn't matter. he's just talking about the general shape of a strat and how he cant get used to it. He'd been using an odd shaped guitar so playing a strat was too different. I can understand that. I've simply been using a strat or a super strat for all my years playing guitar so i'm incredibly used to it. Infact other guitars are harder to play for me. So yeah if you really cant handle the change then the guitar really isn't for you.

Yeah I don't like strats either. The horns just piss me off. I do have a 7 string strat style guitar, and I always play it on my left leg because it is more comfortable and it is closer to how I play standing up.

i know what ya mean, i played a strat at the music store near me, and it just felt wrong, after playin alot of other guitfiddles. but chaingin from an iron bird to a strat doesnt seem like hell, so personally i would just find the most comfortable position and play. goodluck though

I just don't like it... it doesn't feel right at all. The Ironbird didn't feel right either from the start, and I kept it for 2 months before selling it.
I wouldn't say hasty... if I had the chance of trying a Dinky in a store I wouldve probably never bought one. I've tried a billion different positions and I still can't pick well, not to mention that the neck is too wide(not thick but wide). I just don't feel at home with the axe that's all, perhaps someone else will.

Hmmm, I played it some more today and it's starting to feel less arkward now, I can actually tremolo pick fast without fucking up on it. The neck width still gets to me trying to play the low strings on the high frets, but the action makes up for it... I'm reconsidering wether I want to sell it or not...

yo soeru... i agree with you on the strats thing. But i found a way around it... if you get the carved top bodies (like soloists or horizons or whatever) its not as bad.
I figured that the problem for me was i had trouble getting my hand on the bridge to palm mute with all that flat body wood in the way... it just killed my shoulder because of the angle i had to get it at...
To deal with it... i bought a short strap and wore it really high... like really high... like the rage against the machine guy (who i happen to forget his name). The only issue with a high guitar is your shoulder gets tired from being flexed all the time... but thats just stamina that has to be built up.

Yeah but slinging guitars high looks rather lame...
I wanna try a V, preferably a KVX10 at a store and if I find it more comfy than a strat I'll end up selling it.

I recently bought a KVX10, sweet guitar, just really needs the p'ups replacing. Took me around 2 weeks to get used the playing position (I played LP's before the V), I don't find it much of a problem switching between guitars now though the V's neck is wider than my LP's.

Nice. Yeah I have a set of Dimarzio pups(X2n and PAF Pro in matching black and white) that I had planned to install in my DXMG.
I'll see what I'll do. If I don't get used to the DXMG in a week or so, and I have the ability to try a KVX10 and like it, I'll sell the DXMG for sure. I will miss not having an OFR, but since I love V's so much I think I won't really mind. I don't like RR's...
The cool thing is that EVERY store online that sells KVX10's won't have any in stock until March 15th, 10 days from now, I got plenty of time to fully evaluate the Dinky.

if you look lame and can play like hell... well then you dont quite look lame anymore. but first you need balls to look lame in the first place. If it was entirely about looks, death metal bands wouldnt make any money. ever.

Ben From Mephistopheles Slings his guitar practically against his Neck. And he can play better than 90% of the people on here.

You have a good point, DM is definately not about the looks. But hell I just don't feel right holding a guitar so damn high, besides that causes fatigue at your shoulders and shit. I'm no James Hetfield but I like it a little lower than waist-height, best for my tremolo picking. The strat only works for me quite higher than that because of those fuckin body contours... but then I have to fret in a weird way since it's so high so my left wrist takes a toll. Argh... and to think so many people play strats.

no worries man, i know your exact experience. Try out some v's and warriors... they did me sexy. Cheap Jackson v's however are very very small and feel like toys... so i dunno. I have a bc rich v personally... and liked the gibson v... but hated the sound and the pricetag.

i have a strat shape and a V style shape. im pretty well rounded with both. i find its easier to have the strat positioned where the bottom of the guitar is at about the belt line and i play the neck a little tilted up so i can reach everything. but the v i play a little lower but have the neck pointed almost strait up. i think the best way of holding them when sitting is to have the strat on my right leg slightly tilted, and rest the V strait up so the guitar is just about vertical.
