Quick SD pickups question
Err sorry guys I wouldve posted this in somesort of sticky but there isn't one...
Anyway I've ordered a 7 string guitar and since its an Ibanez ill probably be upgrading the stock pickups. I want something really brutal for the bridge and something awesome for the neck, non-active.
So Im thinking the SH-8- Invader in the bridge + Jazz in the neck.
Your thoughts?
I have heard that the Invader is muddy. In basswood, relatively bright, would this be the case?? Ive heard the crappy samples from the SD website - meh... LoG use em and .. meh... not much implies.
I had a kinda Jazz / JB / 59 clash for the neck but I want to have a very versatile guitar so I think its the Jazz for me.
Anyway I appreciate any help, oh and b.t.w I wont be tuning lower than A.
Thanks, John.

An invader is an awesome pickup. nice output. and the bassy sound of the invader can be adjust with the EQ.

I have the invader in the bridge of both my guitars right now and although it is muddier than some pickups ive heard it can easily be remedied by eq'ing and the overall brootalness of the pickup makes up for any of the downsides i can think of. so yes i would say it is an awesome pickup.

I agree with the other guys about the Invader. Almost any pickup can sound pretty good if EQed correctly despite the tone wood. Even though the wood effects the sound, it does not effect it enough where the EQ cant fix it IMO.

I do not have an EQ at the moment. Can the pickup deliver brutal sounds and have great harmonics at the same time? I will be using it direct into a Peavey Bandit...
Thanks for help so far

sure can. my guitar screams with the invader. Sure something more trebley like the x2n with probably have better harmonics but not much.

I would actually opt for a JB. Just because its a seven string, and that comes with a larger neck joint, more wood in general, plus your guitar is basswood. To me the Invader is best suited in an alder-bodied six-string, but you certainly can't go wrong with a seven string invader. On my alder-bodied Washburn I stuck a JB in the bridge and there's almost too much bass, I can't imagine what an Invader would do to it. But as I've said, you can't go wrong with an Invader, those pickups just shred.

Im not sure if its just me or my guitars but i do find it more difficult to pull off pinch harmonics with the invader than other pickups ive used/tried.

If you are absolutley hell bent on going with seymour duncan, the JB is your best bet. I'd honestly go with dimarzio, they are where its at

Hmm yeah im thinking SD jazz in the neck and A dimarzio in the bridge. I hear the X2N is a great bridge pickup but Im 99% sure they dont make em 7 string.
So whats the next best bet...
Tonezone?
Evo7?
Blaze?
. . . . . Ive checked out some of the stats, really doesnt help. Sound samples from the SD website REALLY don't help. So meh, i trust your knowledgable opinions, can't really go wrong with em.
Thanks,

YES. The Dimarzio X2N-7 for 7 strings is already out on sale. I think Music123 have them already.

my harmonics sound amazing with it. doing pinch harmonics has nothing to do with the pickup. pickups just make them sound good. its probably just your technique, because the invader, if anything, for me makes harmonics sound better than other guitars ive tried without it.

Well yeah i used to be able to pull off perfect pinch harmonics with the old stock pickups. But i did not know that pickups have nothing to do with pinch harmonics. I have no idea why I am having more trouble with them now, I can still do them just not as high pitched. Guess ill go practice

my god... i played an epiphone 7 string V with an invader through a crate blue voodoo 120... it was damn sexy. Like... fuck... it had the invader in the neck, and a duncan distortion in the bridge, and there was NO comparison. The invader had such high output it was amazing. Muddiness can be taken care of with an EQ... like a simple boss one... or even a nice mxr one... the only downside i found with the invader is that the high strings dont really sparkle if that makes sense... I'd keep invader for a high gain rhythm sound... if you want leads... well listen to Nile... they demonstrate what it sounds like in a lead... not amazing. yeahhh... i'd say try to test these pickups somehow so you know what you relaly want.

when you are talking about eq'ing the pickup i presume you are all running the eq in the effects loop? as i would have thought that this would change the amps sound not the pickups.
but then again the pickup just enhances the amps sound.
ahh im just confusing myself.

Invader is fuckin' A, I got the EMG-81-7, I would recommend one though if you've got the EQ gear, I didn't know they came in 7-string variants until after i got my guitar routed for an EMG though, otherwise that's what I would have bought!
