I wish there were a very easy answer to such a question. . . using harmonic minor for any type of playing sounds good in my opinion but don't go over board or you may sound like slayer. (harmonic can be used for lead but in olden times it was more of a rhythm only thing, like for chord progressions in minor you augment the third of the 5 chord and the first of the 7 chord. . . making the 5 major and the 7 fully diminished.) I do it a lot but I try to make it sound really dark and classical usually. . . ummm. fully diminished scales are a good thing to pick up on. . . switching between a fully diminished scale and then using something minor afterwards or before sounds really good for the style. . . and most of all don't allow things like theorhetical approaches consume your work. . . make sure it sounds good. . . I think that is pretty vague. . . and pretty general. I think that sums up the info I would give. . . that and learn like 7 chord arpeggios all over the neck and get used to switching time meters and try to be polyrhythmic and that covers most of the technical stuff.

pfft. You don't need theory. I don't know anything about theory and I can still write pretty good (hahaaha) songs.

Learn all minor scales/shapes
Learn all diminished scales/shapes
Learn minor and diminished arpeggio shapes.
Learn to sweep, trem pick, and work on the setuplet or septuplet (6 note groupings)
Try to apply all these items and more as unconventionally as you can.

Ah, your music is dull
I'm passed all theory and taking more advanced classes, and I think I write better than if I didn't know anything.
