Extreme gain on Mesa Rectifiers.......

Ok, so lots of death metal bands I have noticed are using Mesa Dual Rectifiers. Bands like Decapitated, and Children Of Bodom use them, and have some extreme great gain sounds. Although I've played through my fair share of Mesas, and although they're nicely (sometimes overly) warm, they never seem to have the exrtreme gain (like from a 5150, or Knucklehead), so I'm wondering how these bands do it ?????
If anyone knows anything...... perhaps settings, or an extra gain pedal they add in front........

how loud do you turn up the poweramp? the thing with tube amps is that they really start screaming when the poweramp is up decently high... so bedroom/store jam levels will NOT get you your desired amount of gain...

What he said.

If your Amplifier foo isnt very strong let me break it down for you.

When you play your Recto at low volumes you are driving your pre-amp to get the distortion and your Poweramp tubes to power the sound out into your speakers.

When you are playing at low volumes the power amp tubes are not being driven very hard and therefor lack the screaming distortions you hear at concerts and on the cd's

Trust me. Take your amp out to the middle of nowhere. Crank it up to eleven. and you will hear the bodom / decapitated whatever sound.

Alexi doesn't use Mesa's. He normally uses Lee Jackson Pre-Amps and Peavey/Engl/VHT Poweramps.

Buy a power attenuator like a THD hotplate so you can get those beasty cranked sounds at lower volumes. A must have for people who don't have a sound-insulated house.

heres how you get that sound. sell the recto and buy an engl powerball.

seriously though. maybe you're just underestimating the levels of gain on a recto.

keep the gain around 6-8 depending on how hot your guitar sounds, the bass and treb about 5, the mids about 4, and the presence about 6, make sure it's on the modern voicing, and make sure you're using the s.s. rectifier setting, not the tube rectifier setting(you'll get a tighter sound this way).

of course it's a mesa so you'll want to fine tune it. but if that's not brutal enough for you, i suggest you either buy a maxon od808. or sell the amp and buy another amp.

I own a triple rec 3 channel and I've found out through messin around with it that channel 2 set on the vintage mode has the best high gain rythm sound by far. And yea, Listen to people that say not to turn the gain all the way up, It's so not nessesary at all, Between 1 and 3 oclock is plenty of gain. The thd hotplate is so necesary to cause on my triple rec the sweet spot volume wise is around 12 oclock and without the hotplate it would blow up my eardrums.
