Believe me, I'm angrier about the way Hollywood works than you are, but there are way more good movies coming out than you seem to think. In the past year alone the following great (not just good) movies that I can think of right now came out: 2046, The New World, and Cache. Sure, two of these are foreign, but the American one is best. And tons of good movies came out: Match Point, Munich, The Girl From Monday, Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, Manderlay, A History of Violence, The Aristocrats, Good Night, and Good Luck, Where the Truth Lies (weak for Egoyan but otherwise strong), 3-Iron, Saraband, Broken Flowers, Corpse Bride, The Constant Gardener, and Capote were all varying degrees of good. The movies you list are shitty, and a list of shitty movies would be a lot longer than the one I just made, but like I said, there's a lot of good stuff that gets through if you look for it. If you only look for shitty blockbusters, well, yeah, you'll see a lot of crap. Just like if you think of metal as Disturbed and Slipknot it's not going to sound very good. Money flows to crap and trickles down to the worthwhile artists.

Actually sports does a lot for a community. There are a lot of towns and businesses within those towns that thrive off the sporting events that take place there. Sporting events bring people, people bring money, business needs money. See what I'm getting at? Even at the high school level, schools with good sports programs bring in more money to the school, more money in the school means greater funding for education, and so on. So to say that sports do not give back to the community is a very bad assumption.

The reason that low-grade products are utilised by charities is so that they can spread their limited resources to a larger catchment population of people who need them. Sure, there are a minority of directors who'll cream 90% of donations as wages, but each charity has to publish the percentage of donations it receives that go to the needy (I believe it is disclosed in the notes to the financial statements) so it is very difficult to get away with it in practise.

In Akron they found $10,000 in a basement in an old house and since there was discrepancy as to ownership they decided to donate it to the Barberton Red Cross. It's going to be used for kids' summer camp. That's neat.

It's not really a tax write off - charities have to spend all of the donations they receive in any particular accounting period. They cannot make nor carry a profit forward into the next accounting period. However, what you describe sounds like an example of a charity were the directors scrimp on charitable donations in return for larger salaries. There's nothing "wrong" with this - unless they are seriously taking the piss - but it wouldn't sit well with me if I were their accountant.

I would advise people to check that the charity has a registration number and also a decent "giving percentage" (as described earlier) before donating to a charity (I'm sure they're easily located with google, or try contacting local charity watchdogs) and inparticular when giving to a small charity.

It's probably worth remembering that the directors and senior management of large charities are normally not the owners of the charity and have to be paid large salaries in order to entice them out of industry. Good directors aren't cheap and I'm sure even with the large salaries they get from the charity, they can still earn a lot more in industry.

Even with all this, I do agree with you that people who start charities to make personal gains are the execrable scrota of society.

I'm impersonally annoyed by most people here. I don't say anything to indicate that I find what's said offensive, just irritating. I don't tell anybody, for example, to 'get off my back,' and I don't go on long whine-binges when somebody says they don't like keyboards. I do get annoyed fairly quickly, but, as I've said hundreds of times on this site, there's nothing but abstract irritation in my posts. I take nothing here personally and, if I want to go off less, would have to lower my standards rather than thicken my skin. I'm not willing to do that even for the internet, so it's a moot point.

I do choose to, that's correct. But I'm put in the position where a fairly mellow response to you - and don't try to argue that my first post on this matter is anything but dispassionate, up until I call girls who cut off a guy's dick 'cunts' - results in an angry, whiney rant as though disagreement with you required you to respond as personally attacked for reasons beyond my own choice. Saying 'I don't like keyboards' ends up in a pages long rant about musical tolerance. Saying 'there's nothing more pointless than caring about the kind of harm somebody does to himself if it doesn't affect anybody else' makes you respond as though I was insulting and picking on you. It's annoying and I'd like it to stop. And the way it stops is that you learn to deal with people like an adult.

Finally, it's nothing to me if you hate them. I just think it's a waste of your energy to give a damn about it, and said so. My main issue, if you'd noticed, is that I don't think anybody should have or want any say whatsoever in what somebody else does with his dick unless what he does hurts somebody else. I didn't say 'don't hate guys who mutilate their dicks,' I gave an argument for why you shouldn't, to which you responded by whining, which led us here. Follow? If not, I'll have somebody draw you a diagram.

I hear ya on that one. The quality of most conversations around here has gone to shit over the years...
