Yes and no ... some cops are good, some are bad. Many are just downright crazy too ... and their commanding officers make it that way. They make sure that cops disobey their own guidelines for catching offenders so that they can meet their quota for the number of offenders they have to bring in. That's something that leaves a sour taste in my mouth : Let's say a cop has to fine/arrest/whatever 50 people in one month, but everyone just feels like obeying the law for a change and only 35 people he runs across are guilty of any crime. Well, if he wants to keep his commanding officer from chewing his ass out/threatening to demote him/dock his pay, then he has to search vehicles/people without warrants, throw a bag of pot in the backseat of a car when the driver is not looking during a routine pullover, sit outside of a headshop and ask to inspect the bags of anyone who has patroned the store ( and then arrest them for buying a pipe or a pack of rolling papers because its 'drug paraphernelia' ).


All that said, I still fucking hate cops.

thankfully, that doesn't happen here. police officers don't have a pre-estabilished quota of offenders to bring in.

i can't say "fuck the cops" because, amongst others:

in the last 6 months, we had 4 or 5 major drugs busts (shipments cocaine or heroin above 500Kg).
there were several raids to "problematic" (i hate this word) areas in several cities around the country and over 12 organized, armed gangs were dismantled and several top-tiers members were already judged and sentenced.
they've also managed to gather enough proof to take several fat-cats of our national football scene (the worst offender being FC Porto president) for rigging football results and giving generous amounts of cash to referees and managed to also snag several politicians and personalities and take them to trial due to pedophile deeds (they raped children from orphanages and paid the responsibles for the orphanage money to keep their mouths shut).

all in all, i'm more than happy with how police protects me.
