If you get the POD you definitely won't have to drop 260$ on that rack tuner, the POD already has one.

Sort of a different form of pedals, kinda... Like they make rack effects, rack tuners, rack EQ's, rack pre-amps and poweramps, it just has a different shape...

There are two main categories of rack units that we guitarists/bassists buy :

1. Preamps/poweramps
2. Effects

A guitar amplifier head is a pre-amp and power-amp in one. A pre-amp is how the amp is 'voiced', its where all the knobs are ( the EQ, gain, all of that ), and it has no watts. Its the brain. A poweramp is essentially a box of watts with giant volume knobs ( although some of the nicer ones, like VHT and Engl will have some extra features ). Its the brawn. The whole point of this is so you can mix and match equipment together and get any sound you want. If you want a 4,000 watt solid-state amplifier with a tube-powered preamp, it can be done.

Effects are always effects, but the variety and quality of the effects in the rack world piss all over the stompbox world. an MXR 7-band EQ pedal is the same price as an ART 31 band EQ rack unit with high and low pass filters. You end up buying more racks than you can carry in one trip without dropping them, so then you buy a rack case. I just ordered an 8-space case for 60$ from E-bay, you don't have to pay 200$ for one.

oh i see so its sorta like they take an amp apart with the power amp and pre amp shit and make those seperate things and then have effects and high priced tuners and shit

Some rack tuners are just 50 bucks. Or if you have some digital monster like the Boss GT-6, the new Carvin preamp or a PODXT, then you've got a tuner built in. If you still have some favourite pedals you can always use them, a rack setup is'nt incompatible with them or anything like that.

You're correct : A preamp will almost always have an effects loop or two, and that's where you hook up all of your effects/non-preamp units. The preamp is fed to the poweramp, and the speakers plug into inputs on the back of the poweramp.

but ive seen i think it was the pre amp with a 15 band eq and another with 32 whats the point of having some many?? so does that effectively get rid of using a head unit??

More control! Whenever I tweak my sound I like to leave no stone unturned.

Whenever you have both a preamp and poweramp, you've replaced a head unit. If you ever decide to purchase some rack gear, make sure you consult this forum first, we would'nt want you ending up with a Rocktron Gainiac, with its ONE BROOOTAL 12AX7 !1!1!!!1!

It takes a while to figure out what you're dealing with when you start using racks. I use to bug the hell out of xdislexicx

Oh yeah, as long as a guitar head has an effects loop, you can use rack effects. Back when I had a Crate head I ran an EQ and Aphex Aural Exciter through it.

That's what I got now, Randall as the power amp... As far as an EQ goes, I would go with a dual band 15, instead of the 30 band EQ, it can overprocess your sound too much....

any good high dollar brand is gonna have good rack stuff too. but the best sound for the money, that is recommended the most is and adamp-1 pre-amp with a peavey classic 50 or 60 or whatever power.

I understand about how to set up a poweramp preamp and the effects. but how do they get stacked over each other and held into place?

"Rack mountable" means that they have rack ears with screw holes to fit and screw into a rack case

Alright, I was running to much bass to my head from my EQ, that's why it was cutting out... It sounds good now though, and doesn't cut out...
