SORRY FOR BEING MAINSTREAM
One question: I hardly get enough time to download/buy and listen to discographies of artists i have mentioned above. And keep in mind i listen to music like 8 to 10 hrs a day. So is it that u guys only listen to a few songs and you like the artists (in that particular genre) or do you (like me) have to listen to the whole offering by and band before liking them.

from me. not viking? lets take a look at some song titles and lyrics from their LATEST release shall we.
song title: Victory or Valhalla. 'nuff said.
song exerpt from Lindsfarne:
martyrs made christians fallen in this pagan attack
no relic left untouched
hear the sound of the norsemans laughter
behold their rise, sacred loot on their back
saint cuthbert lowering the head
the head for Odins sons
Lindisfarne, Odin rides!
Lindisfarne, down in flames!
Now, i know these are only small traces, and i know they often sing about European history and Franks and such. but they are no longer black metal. thier current musical style perfectly fits in the viking/folk metal, already, sub genre. we are NOT making a new genre called Frank metal, or Flem(ish) metal. you will commonly find Ancient Rites under viking metal, and i aprove.
Kin: i didnt know you were into Mithotyn . fuckin awesome.

Its not because they make one or two songs about vikings that you must call them "viking-metal". I hate to see people looking at ancient rites and calling them "another vikingmetalband" you know? They're not amon amarth or enslaved. Folk metal would maybe be better like you said, but please don't call them a vikingmetalband. Their style is also pretty original so perhaps difficult to fit in a certain genre.

It's fair to call them viking metal for the purposes of this thread if you think they're similar to and better than viking metal bands. Folk metal is almost always associated with viking metal, so I'm not sure why lyrical content should be so prescriptive. So no more arguing.

Why's that, just because they sing instead of growl or screech?
Last time I checked, they were part of the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", not the New Age of British Power Metal

Gee, I'm sorry, let me apologize for questioning your infallible opinion, oh Mighty One
Show me ONE other source that says Iron Maiden is power metal, and Ill concede the argument to you. And NO, your "word" isnt good enough. Hell, show me ANY evidence at all! And no, "fagdance" won't win you an argument anytime soon, although you may think it makes you look tough in front of mommy.
Hey, maybe Opeth is power metal too, considering that every now and then Mikael Åkerfeldt likes to sing Is Deep Purple power metal as well?

That's good, because you seem incapable of forming a single rational thought needed for aforementioned debate.
And Im still waiting to here your brilliant thesis as to why you consider Iron Maiden "power metal".

Their vocal style and their music they play all together. Sure, they might be called NWOBHM but that doesn't change the fact that they're power metal.

Yeah but you cant base everything off their vocal style. Rob Halford uses similar soaring operatic vocals for Judas Priest but you don't call them power metal? Do you?

Didn't I just say 'and their music they play all together'? I'm not calling it on just the vocals alone.

It doesn't directly say it, but it says they heavily influenced it. Calling Iron Maiden Power Metal shouldn't be seen as a problem.

Iron Maiden is NOT power metal
To say that Iron Maiden is power metal is an insult. It's not, but it did influenced PM a lot, and maybe in Somewhere in time it was near PM.
PM is more melodic and a "little bitt" faster than Traditional Heavy, they have (PM)sometimes gay vocals, too much keyboards, shit like that, and sing about dragons, kings, wizards, lizards, elfs, epic battles, etc. When I say its more melodic I mean it has more mainstream pop cheerful melodies.
My description of PM was done with hatred, and not all the bands are exactly like that, but CERTAINLY Iron Maiden is NOT power metal.
power metal
power metal
I don't like power metal, Did you notice?

If Nevermore counts as Prog Metal, they are my favorite in that genre, hands down.

The Treshing Floor as some of the coolest riffs ever on a thrash song and the quasi-Kind Diamond vocals are the cherry on the cake.

i've changed music tastes since my last post.
death= defeated sanity, cc, cryptopsy
jazz metal= alarum, cynic, atheist
brutal death= disgorge(us), defeated sanity
grind= birdflesh, general surgery, regurgitate
give me another year, and it might change

im not saying that band is close to power metal, but many of their riffs on their newest album (which is very good btw) are very classic/power metal influenced, even if they aren't making power metal, viking metal in alot of aspects has many similarities in the riffs of power metal.
