If you have gtr1 playing notes from a scale, and have gtr2 playing notes from a different scale, but have it so sometimes the both play the same note... 3rds and 4ths are good

I would recommend learning sludge-style guitar from the records. Morbid Angel ( He Who Sleeps, God Of Emptiness, etc. ), Candlemass, YOB ... because a scale is'nt going to teach you how to write those kind of riffs.

The whole Gateways cd, Incantations "Decimate Christendom" has some awesome slow doomy elements, but to learn doom, take it from the masters, dISEMBOWELMENT.

Also, when you get your notes from a scale, play non- standard power chords mixed with power chords. Gives the riff a complete different feel. Experiment!
Also, check Hate Eternal for their great chord work and harmonizing
