Problems with Triple XXX

Nothing major, just some things I need somebody to help me fix.

1) I cannot use headphones with the head. I have them plugged into the Line-Out of the head (Not the FX Loop) and I get absolutely NO sound, not even static. And the volume is turned up and the amp isn't on standby.

2) Can I use a guitar cable instead of a speaker cable just for the next day or two until I can buy a speaker cable?

DO NOT TURN THE HEAD ON AND THE STANDBY OFF UNLESS IT IS CONNECTED TO A LOAD(the cab)!

this is very important, you put alot of stress on your head, you can damage something.

using an instrument cable as a speaker cable is a bad idea, it can ruin the cable and also do damage to the head.

So I can't use headphones then?

Its unlikely that while using the Line Out, that the signal to the cab would be cut, so you'd still have the cab pumping out your guitar too.

I got the headphones to work. I connected them to the speaker outs. Now my question to XDX, are the headphones enough resistance?

Headphones are around 120 ohms or so, speakers are 4-16 ohms, i don't think you'd be doing the amp any favours in connecting them to the speaker outs.

It says speaker output for a reason. Not headphone output.

get a hotplate. you can use it to bump down the output, or use it as a dummy load and hook your headphones up to that.

What if I run it through my solid state head and use the headphone out in the SS? Would that be safe?

Depends how many watts your SS's speakers has, too little and it they might blow.

I'm surprised the headphones haven't melted onto your ears. You might have already damaged the amp, I think, hook it up to an appropriate cab as soon as possible to test it.

Use the SS's FX loop, I hear that works better for preamps/heads. But you'd be running two poweramps(the head's and the combo's), so it probably won't sound very good.

Dude, I have a Quantum 30 ft. speaker cable that I don't use(me, a dumbass, bought it thinking it would work as a guitar cord), I can sell it to you if you want.

Doesn't seem like any damage was done. I haven't tested it yet but everything still looks good, no damaged tubes or anything.

it's a tube amp. It's not made for quiet headphone use.

However you could the hotplate thing and it'd work out decently.

My advice is just...turn the volume down low.

Me too, you didn't buy that full raging XXX for quiet bedroom use, just play it quiet at night, and during the day, fucking Krank it.

if you connect it to the combo amps speaker. just watch your volume, or you can blow it.

you may have damaged the head already, but you wont know for sure yet because you cant even really play it. i'm very suprised the headphones still work.

i know it's hard to have a cool new amp and not be able to use it. but don't do stupid shit. you need speakers or some kind of a load. if you're planning on doing bedroom levels and headphone stuff, get a thd hotplate and a small cab. you'll be set with that.

What happens if you accidentally pull the speaker cable off a head that's on? Can it get fucked up instantly?

They should make some little device to secure connections, you never know when a dumbass might trip over a speaker cable. Hmm... actually that might be bad, cuz it might pull the head making it hit the floor, it sucks either way.... Wireless cabinets!

I think Neutric speak-on connectors 'lock' into the socket, not 100% on that though

The headphones are still in great condition, I was running it at very low volumes. What type of damage are you talking about? And if I have damaged it am I screwed?

Your headphone speakers can only handle a certain ammount of watts before they blow, and the amp of yours probobly has ALOT more power than your headhones are able to handle, and the impedance mismatch will blow your poweramp on the head too, you should be glad nothing happened (if it turns out that nothing actually happened)

Dont ever turn that amp on if it hasn't got a proper load to it, I hope you didn't buy that head for headphone use?

You can't use headphones in anything but a jack labeled headphone. There is no headphone jack on a XXX so you can't use them.

Pluggin headphones in the speaker jack will take out your output transformer, so will running the amp with no speaker cab hooked up.

The XXX sounds pretty good at low volumes, just turn it down.

The Neutric connectors are a nice idea but, instead of the cable coming unplugged your amp comes crashing to the ground! You can lose either way.
Jerry
