Leaving a tube amp in the cold...
I am going out of town for most of today, and my tube amp is arriving today. It is fairly cold outside, and normally the UPS people leave packages on the front porch. Will leaving the amp in the box outside in the cold weather do it any damage? Thanks

I heard it shouldn't do any damage. Just make sure when you bring it in to play, to let it sit for a good while to let all the condensation in the tubes and circuitry dry out real good, or you could damage it.

the same thing goes if you are playing the amp for a while...and the tubes are hot and it is cold outside....don't move the amp until you can actually reach in there and hold onto a powertube with no problem.
my tech told me of a guy in germany who played a gig, and right after took his amp outside to load up, and every tube blew up because of the temperature change.

You are supposed to let your tube head completely cool down before you even move it. So you want to let your head cool down for about 10 to 15 minutes before you move it. If not you are taken the chance of alot of things happening. Microphonics which cause unwanted noise and feedback. This happens when particles inside the tube itself start to break up and cause unwanted noise. Its also a good idea because of microphonics that if you have a tube head dont put it on top of your cab when playing at high volumes because of the vibration of the cab it can vibrate the head too and cause particles breaking up inside your tubes. Some companies however now are trying to make shock resisting legs for the head so this does not happen.
But to each their own.
