something about "swedish death metal from germany" made me chuckle. swedish is an adjective describing music and not origin apparently
in all seriousness, which kind are you looking for? the metal scene is saturated with melodic death metal bands like in flames, the abscence, at the gates, etc
if you're looking for good old school swede dm i recommend the following
entombed - clandestine, left hand path
dismember - like an ever flowing stream, the god that never was, where the ironcrosses..
bloodbath- ressurections, breeding death
carnage - dark recolletions

If you can find anything by a London based band called Obsidian (which featured members of cradle of filth & infestation) - it's very Gothenburg orientated but with more 'chuggy' death metal elements. They're defunct now and have only released once CD called 'On The Paths of Others we Feed'.

There are many samples available at www.fragmentsofunbecoming.com so you can check that out.

Um, last I knew Arch Enemy were from SWEDEN, fucking dumbass. You ask for swedish death metal bands, and then you go on to sound like a completely ill-educated metalhead. I was going to help you, but your lack of central intelligence, actually, lack of intelligence at ALL, really offends me. And theres no FUCKING SAMPLES on that page. Please remove your head out of your ass. And it can't possibly be stuck up there since you have been butt-fucked so many times that a tank could fit in there. I guess I'm a little grumpy today, eh?

Fleshcrawl.
And the phrase "sweedish death metal" can refer to both death metal bands from sweeden, and bands that have that early dismember/entombed sort of sound.

Alright fuck face lets go
Lookie here, http://www.fragmentsofunbecoming.co...ilverlings.html OH SHIT ITS SAMPLES!! WWOWWWWWWWW good job you deserve a cookie you dumb bitch
PWNT BITCH :O
also, like i said, swedish is apparently the style, NOT the location. Arch Enemy sounds absolutely nothing like Fragments of Unbecoming, so it would be safe for someone to assume that they are not swedish death metal wouldnt it? Just because a band is from a certain region does not mean that they have to play the main style of music there. While Arch Enemy could POSSIBLY be swedish death metal, it is a good assumption to make when you do not know much about the genre, which is why i made this thread
Edit: and yes i know the thread started very vague. since i had only listened to one band of the genre, i figured swedish death metal was all melodic, not brutal

Quit calling it swedish you cunthater. Anything out of that area in that style is generally summed up in the category of Gothenburg metal. And I was pointing out that you said arch enemy weren't from sweden, and that you were incorrect. So learn to read. And I know more about melodic death and the Gothenburg scene that you will ever hope to know. I've been listening to melodic death from scandinavia for quite awhile now. So shut your trap, this is metaltabs not kindergarten. So go back to jacking off to pictures of elton john and watching Steven's Untitled Rock Show re-runs.

Well, well, well - what have we got here? A huge big fagdance over genre descriptions, that's what. Who'd've thought, eh?
By definition, it is not unreasonable to assume that "Swedish" death metal refers to death metal from Sweden. I've never heard the Gothenburg Sound being described as "Swedish" and to describe such a musical movement as Swedish is a tad stupid since non-Swedish bands also play that style of music. "Swedish sounding" or "the Swedish sound" yes, but not just Swedish on it's own.
But before those who pilloried the poor guy for labelling melodic death as Swedish get on their high horses, I think it's patently obvious what type of referrals the thread starter was looking for, particularly if anybody intent on helping him downloaded the samples he provided. However, it seems that a few set out to initiate a flame war purely based on semantics.
Now, play nicely and help the guy out if you can. If not, stop arguing over something as puerile as the description of a musical genre.

Didn't Jackson do this exact same thing (i.e. trying to start a flame war over some innocuous post) in that 'jesus christ' thread in the Theory forum, John?

Yes. It was fairly unnecessary, I thought. I think that was only the second thread that I've closed in Theory due to over-eager flaming.

Interesting way to come back from a suspension.
I've heard Gothenberg metal referred to as 'Swedish' before, which always struck me as strange. But when I hear 'Swedish' as some description of the sound, I tend to know what they're referring to, and it was definitely a genre description since he used the seemingly paradoxical 'Swedish metal band from Germany' (though why this is any more parodoxical than referring to, say, Black Dahlia Murder as a Gothenberg band from America is not entirely clear to me). Anyway, listening to the samples, it's pretty clear what he means. Insomnium's probably a good recommendation, based on the particular song I heard.
And to the OP: do a search for 'melodic death metal,' now 'Swedish metal,' and you'll probably find a ton of threads on this subject with many answers.

I assumed he was looking for the Gothenburg type of stuff. But I think the melodic death seems a bit, umm, light for what he is looking for. I think he'd like Arsis a lot. I'll try to upload it later today so anybody (including you, MoonRaven) can have it. And PST, this flame was caused by me being incredibly annoyed by him stating Arch Enemy are NOT from sweden, and then here he is talking about SWEDISH death metal bands.

Asking and flaming are two different things, Tranny. Don't clarify your position if you're not the one being chastised, and, in this case, I don't think you are.
Jackson: You got incredibly annoyed because he said that Arch Enemy aren't Swedish style death metal, but rather just plain old melodic death? Why? They aren't. He never denied that Arch Enemy are from Sweden, just that they play the style he was interested in. Seems silly to argue with him about that.
Anyway, what a dumb turn this thread took. Hopefully Arsis rules and everybody has a good day.

You've never listened to Arsis? Well, its aggressive melodic death the way Arch Enemy should have, but didn;t, turn out like. And no, I got annoyed when he said Arch Enemy aren't FROM sweden.

Anyway, what a dumb turn this thread took. Hopefully Arsis rules and everybody has a good day.

i couldn't tell if john was criticising me or jackson. actually most of the posts in this thread don't make a hell of a lot of sense (im still chuckling about the swedish death metal band from germany)
arsis does indeed rule but posting the yousendit link here i dont think is a good idea because it could get nomad in some trouble

People posted Guitar Pro on yousendit earlier this year, so I don't see why I shouldn't. If nomad sees it and objects, I'll gladly take it down.

He never said that Arch Enemy aren't from Sweden. He said they aren't Swedish, just regular melodic death, then explained in that same post that by 'Swedish' he meant style rather than location (this in the post you quoted by him when you started the little fagdance), then said 'just because a band are from a certain region does not mean that they have to play the main style of music there.' No claim that Arch Enemy aren't from Sweden, just that they're not what he considers 'Swedish death metal.' And, while that's an unnecessarily confusing and probably erroneous categorization, he did make it clear from his second post that he was talking about a style, not a location, when he used the word 'Swedish.'
You didn't say anything objectionable, Tranny. It would be good to learn the difference.
I'm interested in Arsis now. I'll probably download some when I'm back at my home computer. I wouldn't worry too much about the link; if they really object to people putting songs up on yousendit, they'll shut them down before us. It's a much more high-profile site and the content is actually hosted there, not here, and nomad in no way encourages anybody to host copyrighted material on this site.

Obsidian were great. I actually have a CDr with a new (new then, it was post 'OTPOOWF') demo track. Ed one of the guitarists isn't playing in bands any more, he produced my band's last EP, which incidentally, is Swedish style Melodic/Progressive Death Metal. (plug: http://www.ironyofchrist.com)
I haven't read all 3 pages yet, but I hope someone has mentioned Vomitory.

That's pretty different than an isolated link or two. I'd recommend checking about that with the man.

So did you check out that Arsis yet PST? If the link has expired I'll gladly send it to you. Great band. Sometimes the vocals annoy me, but the guitar work is fairly good.

Finland had better death metal bands than Sweden, but some good Swedish bands were God Macabre, Carnage, Entombed/Nihilist, and Dismember.

The only Swedish Death Metal/Grind/Thrash bands I listen to are Birdflesh, F.K.U., General Surgery, Grave, Bloodbath and I think I few more. Are Nasum Swedish? Cause if they are then them as well. Oh and some Hypocrisy.

Nasum are Swedish, but the point of 'Swedish' in this thread is to describe a sound, and not a nation of origin. By that definition, Nasum, because they don't sound Swedish, may as well be considered out of the running for 'Swedish' bands.
