SCALLOPED/SCOOPED NECK
Hi all..i've seen this on yngwie malmsteens guitar where in between the frets the neck is scooped out...is this something that i can do on a normal neck or does it have to be a special one..also what are the benefits of doing this or is it a bit of a gimmick..cheers all

You can do it on a normal neck, take it to a luthier. They just scallop the fretboard in between the frets. It makes bends easier, and feels so smooth and shit.

Yngwie says it actually makes it a bit harder to legato cause you don't have the backrest of the fretboard to help.

Its great once you get used to it.
Ive scalloped a couple of my guitars and im happy with the result.
Do it on a shitty guitar or just buy a crap neck off ebay and have a practice on it.
Patience and a certain amount of skill can save a shitload on getting a 'luthier' to do it.
Watch out for your inlays and the trussrod, dont get too carried away!

One thing I don't totally understand is why people get the last 4 frets scalloped (21, 22, 23, 24). Those frets areso close together you barely touch the fretboard anyway.

Well I'll have to take your word for that. A mate of mine has a killer Warlock, blue quilted top, white binding ont he bidy, gold hardware) and the entire fretboard was scalloped, but he's moved away so I haven't sen it in a long time.

Try to play on another guitar with a scalloped neck first. Some may not like the feeling. It's a good ideea to have a second "normal" neck guitar .
It takes a while to get used to it. A friend of mine scalloped his Fender Iron Maiden sig and played a gig two days later. The solos were out of tune and not because he doesn't know how to play , he just could not control the "new" guitar. If you press the strings to much you'l get a sharper note. Remember there's no wood to stop your finger.
