How to get that smooth shred tone

I've been having a bitch of a time getting a decent shred tone out of my meager setup. I have a 120 watt crate amp with pretty decent tone and a MT-2. I just can't get any tone other than my old thrashy/death tone out of this. For those that heard my album a while back, you know what I mean. I'm looking to get a tone close to Cacophony or Jason Becker, and so far all the info I have gathered is "use a boss super overdrive and a marshall lol."

thanks in advance to anyone who replys.

The peavey JSX has a nice shred tone. But unless you have $500+ you probably won't be able to buy it. Good luck.

only so much that can do. but if you have bad technique, then it would probably be good to work on that to make it smoother. but i think he's asking for his tone, not his technique, and if i remember correctly, frozen soul claims to be really good.

You have to boost a distortion on a Crate with a Metal Zone. Crank up the mids and bass and switch to neck pickup .

I like some compression and a bit of chorus with a good neck pickup.

Use your neckpickup, or get a nice new neckpickup, experiment with your volume & tone controls, try with less gain and more mids, ditch the mt-2.

Hope that helps..

to be perfectly honest the shred tone requires realy good gear, a nice tube amp for the smoothnes and good pickups.

Try a PAF Pro, FRED, or Air Norton in the neck. Cut down on the high frequencies a little. Those are supposed to be very smooth.

i dunno... i get a good smooth sound with my emg-81 in the bridge and PA2 switch, and plug it into my spider II... and i find the more gain i put into it, the more smoooth the distortion is... downside is how clarity in notes, especially in chords tends to die... i dont know if thats what you're looking for because i dont listen to cacophony, but thats what i think when i hear "smooth shred"

It almost just seems like decent dist. and a decent neck pickup, and good technique.
