Nah, get a Ibanez RG321 used for about the same price. Or for a little more get a JS30, their much more worth modifying than a lame JS-1 with a vintage tremolo.
You can get a Dean VX too, they go for 200$ new. Fast neck, Grover tuners, 4-3/4" scale, 1-11/16" nut width, string-thru body, basswood body, and it has some good reviews too.

I'm gonna give you the thumbs up on this. I just bought a JS-1 off my buddy, and I've always liked it. Great for riffs, but my RGs are better for fast picking and tapping.
The only bad thing I've ever experienced with it is that the bridge hurts my right hand from palm muting for extended periods of time (like if I'm playing for a little while).

I guess its because I'm so used to Floyd Rose Bridges that the classic metal ones aren't as comfortable. And the height is fine, but I'll check the truss rod when I get a chance.

You sure can,the pickups will come with diagrams, otherwise if your not confident get a tech to do it for you.
EDIT-60's are good for cleans,85's are better for lead.

Might wanna look out for the mahogany version of the RG321, it's pretty much the same but mahogany instead of basswood.

They play pretty damn good for the pricetag.A few nifty extra's you dont find on other guitars in that price-range,too.
EDIT: I think the RG body I got a while ago is a RG321 body,Its got the same finish and it is mahogany.
