Tube question...

OK, so I have heard that EL34's give you a warmer tone compared to 6L6's, which are more brutal supposedly. The power amp in my tube head is convertible to EL34's, and personally, I hate the gain tones of Marshalls, which use EL34s, so I am wondering, is it possible to get the best of both worlds and use two EL34 and two 6L6 tubes in my poweramp?

Cheers

dont think you can do that...
unless theres like two completely separate channels. then you can put 2 in one channel and 2 in the other.

you would probably need the amp modded to run two types of powertubes. but it can be done. mesa has been doing it for a while now. the whole "simul class" thing, which is actually running like 2 el34's in class A and 2 6l6's in class AB. also bob at eurotubes is trying to get everybody running on the intergrated quads.

anyways. what amp are you consdering doing this to?

6l6's arent really more brutal, they just have a different sound. more sag, boomier low end, and more headroom than el34's.

it depends on the amp. if the amp is voiced around 6l6's it might not sound good set up with el34's. like say for example. the 5150. same goes if it's voiced around el34's and then you set it up with 6l6's, like the jcm 900's.

I'll do a little hi-jack and ask how bad it is to forget a tube amp is on and let it stay like that over a period of like 12 hours.

not too bad. they were left on, but not stressed or really used. so it wont have a huge affect on anything really. you might have robbed it out of a couple hours of use.

Another hi-jack of this thread. When I left my amp on it must have robbed it of the few hours left in the tubes because today the volume just went down and I checked the tubes and one of the tubes were glowing like fucking sunshine and one was almost completely dark. It smelled a bit funny too. So I'm going to retube my amp. Its a Laney GH50L and it has a switch for EL34/6L6 bias. I've heard EL34's are tighter but 6L6 has got more of a "modern" tone. I want both tight and modern. Headroom isn't an issue, not yet at least as I don't have a band.

So shoot.

EDIT: Laneys homepage says EL34 is original but looking at my amp the dude that had it before me probably put some 6L6's in there.

You can't run a mix of 6L6's and EL34's without having the amp modded.
