EM fields and pickups
Can strong EM fields de-magnetise pickups?
I've got a bigger telly in my room now and I was playing along with a CD in the DVD player and when I rested, there was constant fuzz from the telly's field, and pretty loud too.
For some reason my guitar's pickup sounds twangier, like singlecoils, and my Envelope Filter doesn't stay modulated over palm mutes as long.
A similar thing happened to my Yamaha RGX121ZL when some fucker decided to listen to music through my guitar (and distortion pedal) and out my amp'.
At least I think this is the case, it could be just paranoia. Physics knowledgables, you should probably know the most about this. I do Physics as well, but, I'm not sure about this.
HELP! Have I duffed my new $850 guitar already or not?!

EM fields can change the polarization on the magnets in your pickups but only if the field flux is stong enough. You TV will not do it. Maybe if you put the pickup inside the TV but still done think that would do it. The EM field from you TV or any other electronic device will influence the pickups magnetic field while you play and make weird things happen. Just play father away or turn those things off and everything will be normal.

Are the weird things permanent?
And the fuzz is pretty loud, although I use the Digitech Death Metal ungated and with an envelope filter...
Part of the problem is that I've just switched rooms with another family member and I can't really find a comfortable spot where there is no fuzz.
I'm switching back for one!

It not permanent. And yes fuzz will be caused by those other things you mentioned. Florescent lights, TVs, and large high voltage power sourse nearby can also cause a lot of unwanted noise.
If you taped your pickups to the CRT in side the TV then over time they might be permanently affected but I doubt it. It is more likely the pickups would end up ruining the picture tube instead.

Yeah, that seems to make more sense. I don't think they would be permanently affected. You would have to screw around with the electrons and their positionings and all those quantum number thingies before a change was made to the magnetic properties of a metal, and the nuclei of the metal's atoms would sort it out anyway, there's no bending them!
Thanx, dude. You've cleared a serious worry!
