Need help with Crate BV120
Ok I'm borrowing a Crate BV120(old model) from some dude that I might buy it from. I've never owned a tube head and would like to know what to look for as far as reliability goes. What are the symptoms for a good or bad tube head?

Sounds great! Is that the only thing I should look at?

well if everything is sounding good, then the amp is providing its main purpose.
if there isn't anything else going on with it, like it smoking or getting really hot or something, then i'd say its fine.

the amp has LEDs for each valve. make sure each one is lighting up equivalently. Play on the clean channel and make sure there is no gain. Play on the dirty channel and make sure you like the sound. If it passes those 3 tests, buy it.

One of the LED's is not lit up. What does that mean?

My mistake. There's four all together ones not lit, one is very dim, and the other 2 are very bright.

I just turned the volume down on my guitar and set it down for a second and then this crackling noise came from the amp and i wasn't near the amp cable or anything. What does that mean?

it depends, if the amp is normally quiet and doesnt make any noise then there could be a problem but if the amp is not quiet when the volume is turned down then i should imagine thats its just noise from the gain or something or maybe bad pickups.
if you are worried about the amp malfunctioning then maybe take it to your local music shop and get them to check it up properly.

The peavey bandit is a good practice amp. Nothing special, but okay for the price if you buy used.
Next time use search, there have been any number of threads about that amp.

I wouldn't say it's brutal, but it's got a nice colorful, dirty dist. Good for most metal and rock I guess...
