Combo vs. Head+Cab

Just wanted to know: what are actually the (dis)advantages of head+cab compared to a combo.

Lets say a 100 watt head+cab and a 100 watt combo.

And is it a good idea to just buy a cab and use the combo as "head"?

i'd say the biggest advantage of a combo is that it's easier to carry around.
head + cab could have a better sound, and it's much cooler ^^

With a head and cab you can mix brands and create your own sound sort of. And head and cab usually provide more headroom

Well, its just that I was on to buy a head+cab...but now I played with my combo again and I like the sound pretty much.
And I dont think that this head+cab would be so much better than the sound I have now with my combo...so Im not sure if I should buy head+cab.

I planned to buy this crate powerblock (150 watt) head and a cab with jensen speakers...my combo is a 100 watt fender w/princeton reverb.

Ah, btw...the combo is more expensive than the head+cab.
The Fender amp I got no costs about 800€ and the head+cab I planned to buy is about 500€.

So maybe the combo just really is better...or should I buy the cab only and use the fender combo instead of the crate head?

combos suck to carry around. especially tube ones. i'd much rather haul around a head and cab. two lighter units, and cabs have wheels. plus i preffer the sound of head and cabs.

But for the people who don't drive combo's aren't a bad idea, I can't possibly imagine lifting a 4x12 into a public bus/train.

i wouldnt imagine fitting a big ol combo amp into a public train or bus...

you should invest in a vehicle before you buy that halfstack.

Nah, I have no need for a car, as I get to school with public transport, and I simply don't have the money for insurance, a parking space, and repairs, which will sure as fuck be necessary as I can probably only afford a used car. I live 15 min. from NYC by bus so that helps too. I'll probably get a rack and 2x12 for portability, and I don't need massive headroom at home.

well, would it be profitable if I would buy a cabinet with jensen speakers and use my 100 watt fender combo as "head" or won´t it change anything?!

I just read that it sounds shitty if a combo (instead of a head) is connected to a cab. Is that true?

Well, not entirely, Helvette, its just different than having a head + cab setup. But it can work. Just make sure you have a decent combo.
