Well, I read absolutely all of it, and...
Initially:
"I have paid considerable attention over the past 19 days to my state of mind since the trepanation...I have a much greater attention span"..blah blah blah basically: IT'S FUCKING AWESOME!!!! (in much more subtle language).
30 days later:
"I have come to the frustrating conclusion that the trepanation has had no lasting effect."
HAHHAHAHHAHAHA FUCKING OWNED. YOU GOT A FUCKING D-I-Y LIFE THREATENTING OPERATION FOR FUCKING NOTHING. HAHHAHAHAHA!!!
FUCKING IDIOT
This guy has the fucking stupidest inferences/explanations for some things, e.g.
"[this] sounds silly I know, but I no longer get headaches from eating cold food or drinking cold drink, no matter how much I take in. I can no longer, it seems, get brain freeze headaches. I think this may be because my brain temperature is higher than what it was with less blood."
Jesus Christ. He's an idiot.
"When I take in much caffeine or THC, I feel flashes of heat from within my head. They happen in different parts of my head each time, always on top, but never by the hole itself. The first time it happened, when I was in a car with a friend, pulling a big bong hit, I started to feel the heat in my head and I heard a squirt sound inside my head. At first, I silently panicked (what's the past tense of panic?). I thought to myself, "Am I having a hemorrhage in the brain or something? Is the sensation about to get more intense in general? Am I OK?", but then it passed and I was fine. I still feel the heat in the head sensations now, very regularly, and sometimes now even when not smoking pot or drinking coffee."
Now his new argument to try to not look like a fucking idiot:
"There is an intense joy and renewed vigor that comes just from living through it."
In conclusion,
FUCKING IDIOT...thanks bassb' for the good read ... and well, 6 years on, he's probably dead.

Yes! The ban on stem cell research has been lifted in Australia!
Just needs to run through a few more legalities and it's done....
I'm afraid I don't have many details / conditions, FBS will come along to clear that up .
This is good.

Im guessing there are pro's and con's from this investigation. Like all young investigations.
I think, stem cells will be 'biology's way to catch up to the other sciences'.
Before you have a flame at me, consider the facts which you already know and were about to own me with. Physics has had major thought systems pop up, which explain so much in the universe. Relativity clashes with Newtonian physics but the two are both extremely important in their suitable situations and work with each other way. Chemistry, Cosmology, etc... all massive contributions. Biology is trailing. Granted, the past 25 or so years have seen much advance but this is mainly due to technological advance. I think, stem cells will be biology's way of catching up to the other sciences (but don't quote me on this ).
Oh, and lets not forget the massive contributions in Homeopathy and Naturopathy
Fuck, I am happy that the legislation has been passed. Fucking close though, 34 - 32.
the opposing barstards.

I've just been hopping around wikipedia pages for the past 4 hours or so and I came across this terrific satirical article through an external link on the Mars Spirit Rover page...
Gold.
I thought about whether to post this in the Funny Internet Crap thread, but I guess this has a more suitable demographic.
The past four hours have inspired me to get back into heavily nerdy hobbies

Project organizers said the most distressing instance of erratic behavior occurred last week, when images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter revealed that Spirit had scrawled the message 'FUCK MARS' in the thick, iron oxide dust that gives the planet its characteristic red color.
BRILLIANT. Top find.
(I forget what it was I was supposed to say. so I'll reflect on it when sober tomorrow.)

Quick reply....
Sounds awesome. Too bad i've got a bunch of mates who think astronomy is gay, and never go with me. Do you live in a populated area with lots of light pollution? Lucky if you dont. When I go out to the country I see so much shit im missing out on at home. Hardly ever see meteors, of any type.

well my roommates are pretty cool with the whole thing. i brought our old family telescope back with me one time since my parents never use it. i've found and shown my roommates saturn, jupiter, mars, and venus. the telescope isn' that great and saturn and jupiter are just about dots...but you can see the rings around saturn, and the banded clouds of jupiter.
we have a decent amount of light from the city. our block r eally doesn't have much light so its kinda nice with the telescope..but for the showers, we went to the beach and we'll probably do the same tomorrow
i'll bring my camera for sure..but none of the pictures will turn out focused.
with such a low light situation, i'm hoping to click the button and capture a nice time lapse of stars moving in our skies. should just look like curved lines.
edit...i'm just kinda drunk. that is what i'd do if there wasn't a meteor shower. i'll try to photograph that...but if i manage to get some meteors in frame, the "background" stars should still do what i mentioned.

How was it grafcore?
In a astronomy mag I picked up the other day (which I read a day too late) said that the Leonids would have been visible from 2am to light over here. Well, at 1.30am that night I could barely open my eyes to look through the lens so I wouldve missed out anyway.
It says the Geminids (another meteor shower) are coming December 13th? You get them there?
Oh well, saw Betelgeuse nicely

Yeah, I'm pretty sure most of America gets Geminids (and also on the 14th). Should be a good one since it gets larger every year. I'm heading out to Utah for Christmas break and hope to schedule the trip to include those dates. That would rule.

nah i missed it. we went to our neighbors keg party and 11:45 rolled around..nothing. then a friend called me and said it wasn't supposed to be till 2 or 3...well i ended up drinking a bunch and not making it till that late...not really sure i remember leaving the party woke up the next day with all my clothes on except my shoes and socks. later someone said the best time to see them is in august..so who knows. i guess i'll just have to make up for it and take out the telescope sometime.
with the scope i have, we've seen jupiter, saturn, venus, plenty of stars, a nebula or two, and of course the moon. honestly don't remember finding mars or mercury. oh yea..and they all pretty much look tiny as hell. could only tell it was jupter cause you can see some moons all lined up and can see the banded clouds...and saturn we could recognize because of the rings. but it was no bigger than one of these damn smiley faces.
edit...don't know about those geminids..i'll have to look into it.

This is a funny article, but the comments are better.
Dr James Anderson, from the University of Reading's computer science department, says his new theorem solves an extremely important problem - the problem of nothing.....
Computers simply cannot divide by zero. Try it on your calculator and you'll get an error message.
But Dr Anderson has come up with a theory that proposes a new number - 'nullity' - which sits outside the conventional number line (stretching from negative infinity, through zero, to positive infinity).
More in that vein. Goofy shit. But the comments are great...
Garth Grant
We shan't recognize nullity here in California. Some concepts are too nutty even for us.

You guys really think this is very stupid? I understand the gist of it, and isn't it similar to complex numbers in regards to the representation of an undefined function with a symbol?
If that is the case wouldn't this 'nullity' not be immediately dismissable, and could have many uses just as complex numbers do?

What do you think of my nullity and complex number allegory? complete rubbish? Or possibly a chance?..

No dice. See where you're going, it would be perfectly reasonable if the original theory was anything interesting, but there's nothing you can do with the theory of nullity. It's cutesy high-school maths dressed up as real theory.

There aren't really any similarities between nullity and i since i is very well defined in relation to the number line and has practical uses. This idiot has "solved" a problem that doesn't exist (programmers introduced NaN - "not a number" - years ago) and anybody who's studied mathematics beyond the age of 16 would be ashamed to put their name to the shoddy mathematics he used in his "proof".

Think southerns talk? I know how you talk. I've been to Tennessee, I've been to where the grand Ole Opry was shot, I've been to Graceland, I been in the JUNGLE ROOM BITCH.
I know y'all(LOL) don't have accents, likewise with anywhere really..well..except Europe and Aussieland.
Soul did call me on my phone 2 years ago and I can confirm his strong Southern accent.
But godamn, good luck finding grits or cornbread anywhere in Canada.

Interesting.
Just found out about this project, alothough it already has a $9,000 grant from Nasa, I think it's a long way off and not really needed yet...
Space mirrors would create an Earth-like haven on Mars.

as for mars..i'm not sure...perhaps mars had an atmosphere similar (at least somewhat) to ours at some point.

This maybe slightly old because I remember reading it in some magazine I have lying around my apartment, but did anyone hear about Stephen Hawking going off about how we need to find other places to live outside of Earth because of how we have treated the Earth and our impending doom because of it? I'd appreciate a link to a news story if anyone has it.

His views on space colonisation are well known and you can Google it up easy. You might not have heard that he posted a thread on Yahoo Questions that was here, nigggggggaaaaaaaa about how we might survive on Earth.
Doesn't seem his capacity for hope has legs either.

Owned. He must be copping a hell of a lot of shit now. I wonder if he's still gonna answer questions or whatever he agreed to for BBC I think???
Anyhow, this could ruin his career, due to him being a computer science engineer, and is inconsiderate of NaN (thankyou article!). We can only hope so.
Edit: Found a nice limmerick in the comments on that second article...

hah yea i do that shit too. when i was in high school i had some spanish class in an outdoor portable trailer type classroom..and i'd sit there and get both of my legs going pretty good. then the teacher on the other end of the classroom would look up and look around till she saw me and told me i was shaking the whole room. it was a pain in the ass at times..cause i wouldn't even think about it, it would just start up..and it didn't take my teacher long to know that it was me doing it everytime.

Its stuff like this that makes me worry about how I'm going to grow up into it most likely. It's already happening; We've only had one snow storm this year, and the rest of the time it's been like spring.... in December, which is basically one of the coldest months of the year around here. Makes you wonder what the summers will soon be like. You'll be able to crisp your bacon on the hood of your car without having to turn it on.

Sleep and Depression/Sucidalness
I think this is an interesting article. More importantly and interesting to think about thing. Its a yahoo article talking about a correlation between nightmare occurances and suicidality.
Coming from a person who almost consistently battles "nightmares" and "depression" at times this article is intresting.
Although this article goes on about sleep problems and what not and to me i definately don't see sleep problems with myself as I LOVE to fucking sleep ahha. I command myself to get like 9 hours of sleep a day and will generally put off importantt hings to make sure that happens. It appears they are considering nightmares as sleep problems, and i'm not sure how/why they would suggest that.

i would say thats because many people that suffer from chronic nightmares have trouble getting the overall amount of sleep needed. sometimes they wake up during a bad dream and i'm sure some people dread sleeping in fear of nightmares which makes it hard for them to even relax enough to go to sleep in the first place.
another reason is that i assume if a dream is causing you a lot of stress while you are asleep, you aren't getting quite as good of a sleep as you would if you were totally relaxed or having a good dream.
i myself don't have a problem with nightmares really..i've had a few and i've woken up from a few of them, but my main problem is just going to sleep. i lay down and toss and turn for a while normally...it varies. i usually don't remember my dreams though..and sometimes when i do, i can't remember everything..just parts and vague ideas of others.

I almost never have a problem getting to sleep ever. Sometimes during forcible sleeping it might take me awhile (purposely changing schedules and going to bed early). Also lots of anxiety for the next day too can make me spend an additional hour awake. But thats about the fullest it takes.
Like i've said many of times my dreams as i would see them is common thoughts manifested into dreams. And sometimes i probably do slightly fear what could arise in my dreams especially if the night before was something that i just really didn't want to "relive" or create a reality of.

spiders, arachnids and maybe even arthropods in general, can regenerate limbs and other parts of their bodies. in a fight, or if caught on something, a spider can easily tear its body away from the trapped limb and the wound will close up. a new leg will begin to develop inside the spider as its next exoskeleton begins to develop inside its current one.
here is a pic of my Xenesthis sp. "white" after the molt before last. the reason it is called " Xenesthis sp. "white"" instead of Xenesthis (then species name) is because it has yet to be scientifically described. its a pretty rare species that has yet to be studied enough to distinguish what makes it a separate species from other spiders in its genus. so i guess it could be the same species as other Xenesthis spiders, just a color variant rather than a valid separate species.
the temporary name of the species "white" comes from the fact that unlike X. immanis (the spider that looks most like it), this species has the pinkish legs as a juvenile, and has a frosted appearance to its black legs as an adult instead of the solid black legs of X. immanis. but like i said..there is a chance its not a separate species because there are occasionally geographic and color variations within a single species.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...MG_5324crop.jpg
for some reason only half of one of its fang had developed inside the older fang.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_7972s.jpg
pic i took today that shows both fangs are completely there after the molt after the last picture.
heres a couple of other pics of the spider..not sure of the sex yet.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_7895s.jpg
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_7892s.jpg
this is possibly the coolest molting pic i've ever taken and it happens to be of this same spider. you can see the new exoskeleton slipping out of the old one in the legs.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c...s/IMG_5309s.jpg
not mine, but heres an adult X. sp. "white"
http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/sho...32&postcount=29
and an adult X. immanis to compare, also not mine (unfortunately!) very similar looking.

What animals would sense vibrations better than an animal with no legs whose only sense of sound is through vibrations?
I was mildly amused that they used a picture of Dendroaspis polylepis for the picture, considering it doesn't occur anywhere near China. You'd be closer geographically to use that picture for an article on Italian snakes.

Yeah, I've heard about those guys. That site says they have a preserved one on Catalina Island which angers me because I was just there and would have loved to see it.

Indeed, they're difficultly distinguished between sharks/whales, it's pretty much a shark body with a whale head.
Pretty crazy about how much we don't know about our planet.
Random cool science fact: Over 400 people have been in space. Only 2 have been to the very bottom of the Ocean (deepest part). At these extreme, extreme pressures (so extreme that if a crack occurred in the glass and some water came through, it would come in at a speed which would cleanly slice through the occupants' bodies.), bio-luminescent animals were fairly common. A fish was seen on the very bottom.
Gotta love Discovery Science.

2 people people have been to the bottom of the ocean? I thought nobody had. I guess you learn things everyday. This will also make me look this up and do a lil personal research on it.

i'm pretty sure nobody has made it to the lowest part of the ocean..ie (i forget the name) trench. i thought only unmanned subs made it down round about that far..if all the way to the bottom. though i could be wrong...especially if discover channel says it heh.

Sounds right to me. Its the Marianna trench. I'm actually in a Geology class as we speak, and we're talking about plate tectonics, ocean ridges, marianna trench and so on and so on.
I wish i could see india in like 10 million years. You think everst is tall now? In X amount of million years india will no longer exist as anything but a GIANT fucking mountain range. The plate that India sits on is going under neith the Eurasian plate called subduction. Since the crust is so "light, and not so dense" it doesn't go down with the plate its on so it just gets kinda smushed together with other continental crust.
I'm definately digging being a geo major nowadays.

As i was. According to Wikipedia.
"In an unprecedented dive, the United States Navy bathyscaphe Trieste reached the bottom at 1:06 p.m. on January 23, 1960, with U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard on board"
There you have it.
"The onboard systems indicated a depth of 11,521 meters (37,800 ft), but this was later revised to 10,916 meters (35,813 ft). At the bottom, Walsh and Piccard were surprised to discover soles or flounder about 30 cm (1 ft) long, as well as shrimp. According to Piccard, "The bottom appeared light and clear, a waste of firm diatomaceous ooze"."

"bottom" of the trench? or just ocean floor somewhere in the middle of the ocean?
i need to get my ass in gear and get my scuba license. had a "jr. open water diver" certification when i was younger..but could only go 60ft with a licensed adult..and never went once after passing the test.

No thats most definately the bottom of the ocean, ocean trench, whatever you want to call it. 10,900 meters is the bottom of the ocean. Equates to about 35,000 feet.
Yeah i can't believe you don't have a mega license where you live. A friend of mine from Lowes used to be a HUGE diver / Ship captain when he lived down near Miami. The water is too nice not to biatch. And you live right there..

Underwater trenches caused by geologic activity are much deeper than most of the ocean floor. I think they're of the "anticline" class? (Or maybe syncline?) Formed by subduction of the plates...
Link 1
Link 2 (Cool because of the "Abyssal plain")
The sub (Trieste)
Cool shit.

Yeah. There was a great series of Discovery channel a pretty long time ago covering different aspects of the ocean, and one episode in particular delt with the Abyssal plain and other underwater alien worlds. It made me want to be an oceanographer when I was younger but now I think the ocean should be studying me.

sounds almost like a david attenburough (might've spelled his last name wrong) video. he has compiled quite a few amazing nature documentaries. a quick google will show you all the movies hes been involved in..very famous..and for good reason. there is some amazing footage in all of his documentaries. check them out. one thing i've mentioned here on the mt boards was footage of the largest species of centipede catching a bad in mid flight..thats part of one of his videos. Scolopendra gigantea is the species..it climbs up onto the ceiling of a cave and hangs half of its body down since it can sense vibrations from the bats. it nails one and sine it has powerful venom, it easily subdues the bat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLmUb5P_Ws ha i know i've posted this here before..but its fucking sick!

Awesome, I never cought that (the link, not the bat). I'll look into Mr. Attenborough's stuff - thanks for the rec.
EDIT: You're right Graf, it is him:
"The Deep" ( Second Episode of the series)
Broadcast 19 September 2001, the next programme explores the unknown depths of the ocean. Over 60% of the sea is more than a mile deep and it forms the planet's most mysterious habitat. A sperm whale descends 1,000 metres to look for food and is followed. On the way down, a number of unusual creatures are witnessed, such as transparent squid and jellies, whose photophores give pulsating displays of colour. In such dark places, both being able to see (or sense movement) and the means of quick concealment are equally desirable. To that end, some use bioluminescence as a means of detecting food or evading predators. A descent to the very bottom of the ocean — some 4,000 metres — reveals life even at such cold temperatures, much of it new to science. It is dominated by echinoderms that sweep the sea bed; however, there are occasional large hunters, such as chimaera. In addition, six-gilled sharks can grow up to eight metres in length and have remained unchanged for 150 million years. They are described as "living fossils" and relatively little is known about them. As the continental slope flattens out it joins the abyssal plain, which can form huge trenches. At seven miles, the deepest is the Mariana trench, and fish have been found there right down to the very bottom. Attenborough remarks that more is known about the surface of the moon. Species captured on film for the first time include the Dumbo octopus and the hairy anglerfish.

cool...that guys docs are fucking amazing! i recommend them all..even the ones i haven't seen (most of them) i've seen the ocean one in its entirety, and the "life in the undergrowth" which is about bugs pretty much. it shows a lot of various insects as well as spiders and other arachnids and some myriapods (centipedes/millipedes) like i said...incredible footage all around. a lot of the things in his videos i've never seen anywhere else. hell they spend almost a decade filming each one i think. they better have some damn good footage hehe. but seriously...all of his works are worth a rent/watch.

Yeah i've been learnign about sea floor spreading for like a week in 2 different classes. Its intresting to hear how the whole plate tectonics thing works. (in greater detail than i did in high school)
My geo class definately rock. I'm glad i've decided to change my major and this semester was gonna suck, but now completely rocks.

sounds like a cool class...i hardly took shit for science in college..being an art major and all. having become addicted to spiders after school makes me wish i had gone for something in biology heh.
