You obviously have not been to Epcot.
"Explore a canyon, be sprayed by a rushing waterfall, be thrilled by magnificent gardens and majestic architecture — Canada waits for you! Experience this wonderful country from coast to coast in the incredible CircleVison 360° film presentation, "O Canada!"
It totally blew my mind...actually, it's pretty fucking tame considering you have to stand..in a theatre full of Brits at that.

That sounds really cool and would revolutionize space travel if it's perfected. But something tells me if it is, humans, being who they are, will use such technology in a bad way.

No. Quantum mechanics would be in the shit if it did. They are sometimes referred to as having relativistic mass but this is somewhat of a misnomer as every particle that possesses energy will, according to special relativity, possess mass. This is not the case - it just arises out of the wrongful re-arranging of E = mc^2.
Note that relativistic mass is not invariant, i.e. it changes with velocity. However, rest mass is invariant.
The relationship between rest mass and energy is:
E = mc^2 / sqrt(1 - v^2/c^2) ...(1)
where v = velocity of the particle, c = velocity of light, m = mass.
And so, for a photon with v = c, it can be shown that (1) becomes:
E = mc^2 / sqrt(1 - c^2/c^2) = mc^2 / sqrt(0)
It can therefore be seen that in order to avoid dividing by zero (making E infinite), that the mass of the photon must also be zero.

The conversation can proceed one of two ways from here.
1. You can say something substantial, in which case I predict you will earn yourself the right to a full-blown teabagging.
2. You can say nothing. I recommend this one. If you pull me from my work long enough to yell at you, there will be very little smiling involved.

I got a magnetic exercise bike the other day.It uses magnets to make it harder to pedal. On my old bike, the energy of my pedalling is transfered into the vinyl belt on the wheel, and creates friction. Therefore the energy is turned into heat.Where does the energy of my pedalling go when Im on a magnetic bike?

Well, without a detailed discription of the exercise bike and it's mechanics it's difficult to be specific. However, to see how energy is transfered through a magnetic field it may be useful to consider two simple magnets with the same poles coming into contact. The opposition to the magnets being drawn together is analagous to frictional force and requires the input of energy in order to be overcome.

OK..that part is obvious.
But since energy cant be destroyed but simply transfered....the energy simply flows out in a magnetic stream?
Undetectable to our senses but there none the less?

Nice way to pick up $1m from the Clay Institute - although I believe it has to stand uncontested for two years. I've checked the proof and, yep, that's how I'd've done it if I put my mind to it.
(!)
That's two of the millennium problems down now - Fermat's last theorem was also proved a couple of years back.

The energy that is used to overcome the magnetic field is converted into mechanical and heat energy by one's muscles. So, magnetic energy is converted into mechanical and heat energy, thus energy is conserved.

fremat, i seen a tv special about some guy who spent 7 years on a solution, solved it<this was i believe in the 80s>, gets international acclaim, then has someone proof it and it was actually false, which the dude acknowledges. 7 years all for nothing, damn.
there was a japanese guy who committed suicide while working on that, i believe, either that or he was working on something similiar, lost his shit and ended it. as if it was a greater shame to to carry on living not solving the math problem. this was the way it was presented on the show, i dont understand, this shit is another world to me

I'd like to see the equations that govern turbulence over aircraft wings solved. The Navier-Stokes equations, I believe.
Incidentally, one of my tutors from my final year at university had a hideous speech impediment and could only pronounce Poincare (real pron. Po-an-ca-ray) as Po-wank-away. Tragic.
Oh, and if you're still looking into Chaos Theory et al, Poincare crops up a bit, the clever git.

I'd hazard a guess that was Taniyama and that show was full of shit for speculating like that.

Yea, I mean it's bloody obvious. Of course that function couldn't give her herpes, there's just so many variables that would spin her brain out through her ears way before herpes would be an issue.

Ahhhhhhh fat children is it?
An interesting study - children with rigid disciplinarian parents are more likely to be fat. Curious. As yet unexplained. A good example of epidemiological data not being useless and shitbox-ish.

FBS, come in my arms, let me kiss you!
No, don't by the way. And please, don't let me do it.
That was really interesting. My parents did worry for a time that I would get overweight, what with stealing cookies and using huge amounts of butter on sandwiches. Something that I find somewhat amusing, not least considering that I'm even worse on that point these days; so I've been looking to some other explanation for fat children. However, this aspect was quite novel to me.
I bow, take off the hat and say many thanks, FBS.

TODAY'S SCIENCE HOTNESS
AWESOME research from Harvard which measures implicit attitudes. I am always sceptical of research like this, but fucking hell - it did very well on me. Apparently I have a moderate bias against the U.S. and a HUGE bias against fat people. No kidding.

Hmm, I really don't get the whole "fat people good" and "thin people bad" thing. Maybe there's a vital concept that I'm missing.

AWESOME research from Harvard which measures implicit attitudes. I am always sceptical of research like this, but fucking hell - it did very well on me. Apparently I have a moderate bias against the U.S. and a HUGE bias against fat people. No kidding.

i read a really cool article about this research, i wanted to try it then totally forgot. awesome.

Hm, mm. However, I don't really understand at what stage they get rid of the factor that you learn one combination first and then must learn another immediately after. Or is it a random set-up every time?

I did it a few times for a laugh. The order is randomised and the results are counterbalanced. They wouldn't fuck something like that up.
It had a really powerful effect on me. When I was trying to group the normal groups, I missed maybe two answers in the whole section. But when trying to group 'fat' and 'good' I fucked up completely, got almost three-quarters of them wrong! It was amazing. Normally I am very sceptical of this kind of research but Diddly Cuntfucking Jesus if these results don't make themselves intuitively obvious.
GO SCIENCE!

However, I must note that on all tests, the "easy" and obvious intuitive string comes first, but the second "hard" and unobvious string comes second. Did they account for that? Because somehow people might "imprint" the blabla left, blabla right, and it's harder when you turn that around.
So instead of showing some cultural bias, you would show a reflex bias.

For the second time, the results are counterbalanced. They also have 'wash-out' periods between the two test periods that determine your level of accuracy in the reversed condition.

Have we heard it before, oh yes we've heard it before. The interesting question, though, is why. Why have we heard it so many times before?

I simply cannot believe they were allowed to do this study. LUCKY BASTARDS!
Psilocybin can occasion mystical-type experiences having substantial and sustained personal meaning and spiritual significance

Received: 20 January 2006 Accepted: 27 May 2006 Published online: 7 July 2006
Abstract
Rationale
Although psilocybin has been used for centuries for religious purposes, little is known scientifically about its acute and persisting effects.
Objectives
This double-blind study evaluated the acute and longer-term psychological effects of a high dose of psilocybin relative to a comparison compound administered under comfortable, supportive conditions.
Materials and methods
The participants were hallucinogen-naïve adults reporting regular participation in religious or spiritual activities. Two or three sessions were conducted at 2-month intervals. Thirty volunteers received orally administered psilocybin (30 mg/70 kg) and methylphenidate hydrochloride (40 mg/70 kg) in counterbalanced order. To obscure the study design, six additional volunteers received methylphenidate in the first two sessions and unblinded psilocybin in a third session. The 8-h sessions were conducted individually. Volunteers were encouraged to close their eyes and direct their attention inward. Study monitors rated volunteers’ behavior during sessions. Volunteers completed questionnaires assessing drug effects and mystical experience immediately after and 2 months after sessions. Community observers rated changes in the volunteer’s attitudes and behavior.
Results
Psilocybin produced a range of acute perceptual changes, subjective experiences, and labile moods including anxiety. Psilocybin also increased measures of mystical experience. At 2 months, the volunteers rated the psilocybin experience as having substantial personal meaning and spiritual significance and attributed to the experience sustained positive changes in attitudes and behavior consistent with changes rated by community observers.
Conclusions
When administered under supportive conditions, psilocybin occasioned experiences similar to spontaneously occurring mystical experiences. The ability to occasion such experiences prospectively will allow rigorous scientific investigations of their causes and consequences.
Keywords Psilocybin - Methylphenidate - Hallucinogen - Entheogen - Mystical experience - Spiritual - Religion - Anxiety - Humans

its like LSD-lite without the strycnine muscle ache, teeth grinding effects. i never had a "spiritually uplifting" experience from it tho. just some visuals and, in addition with smoking pot, a totally inebriated, couch potatoe, got the munchies, kind of experience.
lsd on the other hand..........
suprised noone had a bum trip.

My experiences - and I think this isn't unusual (at least among the people I know who've used both) - on acid and shrooms weren't particularly similar; certainly not so much that I'd call shrooms 'acid lite.' But, then again, my experiences on shrooms - and, again, this conforms to those of other people I know - don't sound at all like what you described.
Interesting study. When you're Johns Hopkins you can do more or less whatever you want. You applied to the wrong school, Jim.

lsd lite in terms of visuals. i guess thats what i mean

Me too. Grants some sort of hope for the future. Of course, this all becomes a bit confused since it was what we see now millions of years ago, and were we to change our angle of observation a bit it won't have happened yet. But appealing nonetheless.

as in, when the universe was 1 million - 1 billion years old, the protogalaxies formed after the neutral atoms formed and the universe became transparent and black. Since it's been 13 billion years since the supposed end of the protogalaxy form, wouldn't the protogalaxies have accreted already?
Or do they not know enough about this lump to determine whether or not it actually is a protogalaxy? but I think I read in the article that it is...

As I pointed out concerning the giant ball of fire - which by way is much more awesome cause it's just not a lump of matter it's a GREAT BALL OF FIRE - it is what we see now millions of years ago. Same thing when we look at other things far away, since information, on an universal scale, is sluggish.
Actually, if Hawking is right in saying that the limits of the space-time-matris can be described as sphere, shouldn't an astronomer with a sufficiently powerful telescope be able too have a look at his own childhood?

I don't remember if that was posted already or not, but I've always thought there was a connection between Biblical creation and evolution. I don't know what it is and to me it's not been a major priorty to know so I've let it go at that. I thought it when I was a teenager and still do.

That idea to build a linear particle collider is a great one, and the US govenment should go ahead with budgetting it. Reading about in New Scientist the other week.
Then we can building a dctionary and start learning new phenomena. The precision of the lower power collisions it produces would allow us to observe more than just energy flying recklessly outwards.
...On the topic of science.

I thought this would be the best place to ask this.
Why is it sometimes that the moon is an eerie reddish orangish yellowish color?

Impurities in the atmosphere and light pollution would be my best guess.

Couldn't it be because of diffraction or something like that?
It only seems to have this colors when it's at horizon level.
Anyway it's cool when it happens

It's more likely to be the refraction of light by particles (most likely arising out of increased pollution) in the atmosphere.
An even more likely explanation is the photoelectric effect whereby the photons reflected by the moon are absorbed by these pollution particles and then re-emitted as orange light.
This happens because the photons are "absorbed" by the pollution particles, which excites the electrons of the pollution particles to higher energy states. When these electrons decay back down to lower energy states, another photon is emitted of a different wavelength. Hence the orange glow rather than the brilliant white.
Incidentally, his paper on the photoelectric effect was what eventually yielded Einstein the Nobel prize in 1921 and NOT his work on General Relativity.

Wouldn't another possible explanation for the moon's reddish colour is that unlike of a sunset?
That is when the longer wavelengths (red, orange) penetrate better due to angles of refraction and penetrating ability...Since the moon reflects the sun's light...
I think this is likely... But shit, I need verifying and refining from old physics text, can't be fucked.

Of course, I'm speaking as one pretty far up in the northern hemisphere, so make appropriate adjusting to the time "August".
August moon, is that what you were getting at? Problematic has it right then, the moon is so close to the horizon that much of the shorter wave lenghts get filtered away before it reaches you. actually it's even more distinct around midsummer, but the many sunhours tend to hide the fact, until somewhere around full moon in August. The conclusion is that the uncanny red moon is more of a June-July-August-September moon, however that isn't by far as romantic as August moon.

I like my grandma's old saying of their being "blood on the moon" better. She said someone was gonna die. Well, of course, but it was a spooky thought.
They said on the news today that's it's called a harvest moon because the the farmers have more light to work before sunup and after dusk. I know I was out in my backyard in my nightgown this morning taking pictures of it. I may set up tonight and see if I can get some night shots.
Shiiiine on, Shine on, harvest moooooon, up in the skyyyyyy
I ain't had no lovin' since January, February, June or July.....
Or Neil Young's "Harvest Moon" is really cool, too. I can't remember how to play the darn thing though. I used to.

not that this really has to do with the apparent coloration of the moon...but last night (for the first time in a long time) we had clear skies down here in "sunny south florida" so we dusted off the telescope and took it outside to take a look at the moon. it was nice to see..but its not always the best to look at it when its full..or close to full. all the extra light seems to blur some of the details of the craters. its better when you can see the light dark line which brings out the shape of the craters a lot more.
we also found jupiter and could see 2 of its moons. tried to find some more planets..but a couple turned out to be stars...and the rest we wanted to check were about directly overhead which is a bitch and a half to line up with the scope.

In that case the moon would appear to be orange a lot more than it does; an orange moon is quite rare, whereas a spectacular sunset is frequently observed.

Why is it sometimes that the moon is an eerie reddish orangish yellowish color?

Jon hit it, but heres some details:
In the light spectrum, blue light scatters easier than red light and the red light that is "leftover" is bent by the Earth's atmosphere and directed elsewhere. This is why the sky is blue and not any other color. There is always this "red light", it just isn't being picked up by anything noticeable (sunsets can). But when the moon is in the position that catches that light, called the umbra (Earth's region of total shadow), the moon happens to catch the reflected redlight particles giving it that coppery glow (this is the reason why it is so rare). Now, I know that this happens during Total Lunar Eclipses, but I'm not sure how limited to it it is.
The more polution we have (being caused by us, volcanos, etc) = more brilliantly colored sunsets because off all the shit in the air that can catch refracted light particles.
Yay for my Astronomy class.

Well.....at least we get to choke ourselves to death with poisonous gas beneath a pretty looking sky.

Refraction is usually applied to the bending of light by other particles. Diffraction occurs when light is shone through narrow slits.

The arguments for it all seemed to be quite lengthy, quite detailed, thought out and researched, and very intelligent. The arguments against it were based solely on the opinion that it is ‘crazy’ and talk like, "What’s more conscious than conscious?". I heard from an acquaintance on telephone that she was glad she had done it, felt more mental energy, and had days of brilliance. I came to believe that the key to a permanent consciousness increase was a hole in the skull, to restore the full brain pulsation of infancy. After several months of research, discussion, speculation, watching surgical videos and trepanation documentaries, and even an actual viewing of a trepanation, I decided I certainly did want to be trepanned, and sought a way to do it."

Why do dumb people assume that if you READ SOMETHING IT MUST BE TRUE? Any neurosurgeon would have said 'you're a fucking idiot, brains don't work that way'. Any craniofascial surgeon would have said 'there's no such thing'.
"The arguments against it were based solely on the opinion that it is ‘crazy’ and talk like, "What’s more conscious than conscious?" AND THE FACT THAT OUT OF ALL THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO GET HOLES CUT IN THEIR HEADS FOR ANY REASON, THERE ARE NO RECORDED CASES OF THIS HAPPENING."
