New nut... ?

I have a guitar with a regular plastic 1-11/16” nut. For the string I use on the low E(.52 guage), I think the strings does not fit the nut properly(it's slightly higher than the other strings). I'm thinking: should I attempt to file the space a little bigger for the bigger string guage? Or should I get a brand new, better nut altogether?

What brands for new nuts do you reccomend? It doesn't have to be expensive as hell like a titanium nut, but I hear there are graphite nuts that work real well. I thought of getting that Earvana compensated drop in nut, but it sais "42mm", so I'm not sure if it'll fit my guitar. I want a good nut that will allow for bigger string guages.

Has anyone replaced the nut with something better on a 1-11/16” nut guitar? Which one did you buy?

i'd try to make the groove a little bigger first. if that fails, then you can always buy a new nut from allparts.com

If you take your guitar to your local shop that does maintenance and repairs. Ask them to Restring your guitar with the guage that you want. What they will do is, change the strings. Make the grooves in your nut bigger to accomodate the bigger strings. Check your truss rod and action, intonation. everything like that.

Basically i a service like when you take in your car. At my local place they will charge you about 13$ (Australian dollars) plus the cost of the new strings.

Easy.

If you want a new nut. Theres a few option. Graphite is one yueah,

But you also get good sounds from Bone and Brass nuts. Try a brass nut is you like searing solo sounds. You will like the results. Yngwie swears by them

Earvana nuts are awesome!I have one,and graphtech saddles and it improved the tone a shitload.
And Opethfan,it shouldnt be too hard to get that done yourself.Intonation is pretty easy to do.

then you right that in your damn signature, and dont write it at the end of each post...

Anyway, would it be possible to put a locking nut without a floyd? I ask this because the strings would be locked in a fixed bridge and in the nut, therefore no more going out of tune.

yeah but why would you want to? if theres no tremolo messin with the tension of the strings, then a lock at the top would be useless because strings stretch, so you would have to loosen it evry time you tune, and that would be too much effort cause evry time you lock the nut the strings will tighten, thats what the little knobs are at the top of the trem system itself, to tune AFTER you lock the nut. save your guitar alot of grief and pain, and not do it. thats my reccomendation, any one else?
