Learn some more 'advanced' forms of the technique and the basic principles will soon become apparent and you'll pick them up. Two things to learn I can recomend now:
The solo in 'Hallowed be thy name' by Iron Maiden
(may be wrong, so check out the tab/GP as I'm typing this from a two year old memory)
e or b --0-7-5-0-8-5-0-7-5-0-8-5-0 etc
Learn this too, it's a riff to practice this technique focused on A harmonic minor:
e--5-0-12-0-10-0-8-0-7-0-5-0-4-0-5-0-7---etc
You'll soon pick it up. Just be sure you're pulling off correctly. Firstly practice trills to build up on the mechanics between the finger/fingers you're using, such as a simple:
--5h7p5h7p5 etc
You want to be slightly pulling downwards/upwards on the string (depending on where the string is) but only with your finger tip, so the rest of the finger is removed perpendicular to the fretboard as not to catch other strings. I wouldn't mute with the picking hand. Though at first it will make things cleaerer, it may become a bad habit. If you practice in the way I've stated you shouldn't need additional muting, which will increase your fluency and accuracy through time and experience.
Hope that helps!
