I am rebuilding a guitar, which includes repainting and I did some pretty extensive research, atleast for me that is. And what i've been told is to spray atleast 3-4 coats of primer sanding after every coat is dry prior to putting on the next coat, then use 6-8 coats of your finish again sanding after each coat drys prior to putting on the next coat. Then put on yoru lacquer or clear coat whatever you want to call it. Its pretty extensive and can be a tad pricey with all those damn spray cans or bottle for your air brush or whatever, but I think if done this way, it'll turn out the best.

You dont have to put 6-8 coats. you keep spraying until you think the colour is dark enough. Also after you put the lacquer, DO NOT put your guitar on a guitar stand because the rubber will eat your guitars finish. this is because lacquer takes 1 year to fully cure/harden

I just finished refinishing mine. I did the whole spray and sand method. I didn't put 6 - 8 coats though. I did 3 maybe 4 coats of primer, mainly 4 where it needed filled the most. Actual paint, I did 2 coats. I also used acryllic enamel car paint. Someone once mentioned that does something to the tonality...

Looks nice, reminds me of my old YJM strat (hmmm have mentioned this in two threads now... Maybe I should state it was a complete shitty axe incase anyone wanted to know).
Yeah many well applied layers will result in a better finish, but you need the patience, motivation and a degree of skill to do it. I know a lot of typical painted surfaces that look good (such as on shitty cars or bicycles etc) are done using charged particles so the paint particles adhere evenly to the surface; spray painting can achieve a similar quality, though it's frustrating as it only takes one fuck up to seriously bring down the quality :/

Seems to be OK...
I dont know anything about painting but do know they sell cans of spray clear coat.
A few layers should give it protection to the final finish I'd assume.
I'd also assume to let each layer dry a whole day before applying the next.
???

Lots of very thin coats is the way to go. You dont get thicker patches or anything that way.
Just a question, when adding the clear finish, can you use somehing like clearcote for cars? Or is there a special coat you need to use.

That must be why they are the most popular guitar ever.
and the most copied
Go away and play a HSS strat set up for Metal in the tuning of your choice with the Humbucker of your choice in the bridge. Then tell me strats suck.
They indeed do not suck. Get the right strat and they BURN. Even for metal

The neck fits perfectly into the joint, so applying a coat of paint to the joint will result in the neck not fitting properly.
Cover the inside of the joint with masking tape or something before you start spraying.

I think Soulinsane mentioned in another thread that the neck pocket needs to be mostly clear of paint, so if you've still got some in there, its not going to be a problem

And yes it takes lacquer 1 year to fully harden. Guitar companies use a similar product called polyurethane which takes days to harden. So keep frm putting your guitar on guitar stands because the rubber will eat away the finish.
