Peavey 5150 vs Peavey Triple XXX
OK, I am wondering the huge difference between the 5150 and the Triple XXX. I am asking because I loved the Triple XXX when I played through it, perfect for the Arch Enemy/Carcass/Children of Bodom style sound I want. Now, people have said the 5150 is perfect for this as well, but I didn't like what I heard when I listened to the samples of the 5150 on the Peavey Website. Is there much of a difference between the two that I should be aware of? Because there's tons of 5150's swinging for 200-500 on eBay, and theres hardly any Triple XXX's on eBay. Should I just get a good deal on the 5150, test it out, and then trade it in towards a new Triple XXX if I don't like it?
Thanks

IMO the XXX is better. I own one, and I LOVE it!!!
I have played the 5150 and 5150II and still like the XXX over it.
THE ONLY THING I DONT HAVE ON THE XXX, is a reverb knob.

The 5150 has an 'uglier' grind that I prefer. But if you want a clean channel ...

I'm tempted to bid on one of the 5150s because they are so cheap at the moment. And I'm sure I could get what I payed for it on a trade in for the Triple XXX if I didn't like it. Though I was in love the first time I played that Triple XXX.

I've been looking into amps too. Think when I get a new one, I'll be stricken with the same decision although I want to consider the 6505 too.

I think I may just buy the Triple XXX, its pretty killer and I know exactly what I am getting. First though, I need to sell some equipment and other miscellaneous stuff to gain some cash for it.

The 5150's definitely very good for Heartwork-style Carcass and Arch Enemy. Maybe not quite as good for CoB but I've never really tried to get that tone out of it. I wouldn't say the grind sound is overly "ugly" (personally I wish it were uglier), but I haven't heard a XXX to compare it to.

Yea, at times the sound clips I heard of the 5150 sounded somewhat too sterile for what I want. Not meaty enough. Anyways, could have been many factors that made those soundclips sound the way they do.

Yes, those clips make it sound like pure shit. Go listen to Vader's "Litany" or Decapitated's "Winds of Creation" or "Nihility", then you'll be drooling over 5150's.

So, should I take a risk and buy a used 5150? Because I think maybe I could get my money back if I traded it in as collateral for the Peavey Triple XXX. This is a toughie.

A 5150 sound awesome gain wise. If you buy it you won't be dissapointed. And yes, if you don't like it for some reason you can always sell it for almost same price and get the XXX. I played them both in a store here. I liked them both. Nice high gain.

In Flames uses 5150's and I believe Arch Enemy still uses them. I know there's a lot of studio magic in this, but listen to like In Flame's "Touch of Red", that's show what the 5150 can do. While on the other hand, watch like Arch Enemy's "Dead Eyes see no future" or whatever, the live video one. Ohhh gets me drooling everytime I hear Michael's leads on that video.

Yea, I have always liked the tone of earlier Arch Enemy albums, but how will the 5150 suffice for Bodom style tones? And I would like to have the low end and some of the warmth that the Peavey Triple XXX offered.

save up and buy one. don't dick around with cheap shit that just "getting you by".
i have one.... it's not the most amazing amp ever imho. but it's still pretty awesome. i might sell mine and get either another engl, or something like an uberschall, xtc, or a vht pittbull.

just to ask, what's the overall most impressive amp you've played? framus, engl, hughes, vht, etc.?

out of what i've owned.... there are some i miss and regret selling. like my jcm 900 4100, my jmp-1 preamp, h&k triamp, and now i'm thinking i miss the splawn a little.
but right now im on the engl powerball vs framus cobra. and the engl is doing some Pwning. so im really considering a savage, a savage se, or save up and go all out and get the SE.
i like the vht pittbulls for the same reason i like the powerball, they're very tight sounding, they do not flub out. they have seemingly endless suply of gain(i honestly have the gain on 4, and i usually play on the lo gain mode.). just a very usuable easy to dial in sound.
the bogner xtc i want because it's such a versitile head and i really dig the warm sound.
the uberschall is just one of the heaviest amps i've ever played. it's just got a really unique sound.

Do to my parents restraint on cash flow, I think I am going to unfortunately have to go with the 5150 and hope it can hold value for trade-in later on.

I scored a 1960 for a good deal, so luckily my 5150 can be run through that now. My amp's not in too bad of a condition, considering it's like 13 years old. But one thing I gotta say, why the hell do the 5150 knobs come off so easily?

A lot of amps have that problem. As for having good cleans, as I stated, its not important as I am going to be running a two head rig anyways, with an A/B switch so I have digital modeling head for cleans and a brutal tube head for everything else. But, I don't use cleans much except for blues/fusion type stuff.

Is that really the 5150 on those Decap' albums?
I thought Vogg was a Warhead man. Did he use that after those?

one thing to nkow about the 5150. i know people say it all the time but on this amp you have to have to crank it abit. people say that about all the oither tube amps but some can get a decent sound at fairly low volumes. the 5150 is nothing but buzz unless pretty loud.

Hmm, I have a decision to make. The parents have decided to let me get whatever I want as long as I pay for it, so I have a choice to make. The Triple XXX for more money or a 5150 for a lot less.

Again, just go for the XXX if you really liked it. There's nothing worse than getting the 5150 cuz it's cheaper, and finding out that it sounds like shit to you. I might get my amp modded sometime in the future, by like JerryP or someone.

I just put my bid down on the Triple XXX, but if it doesn't work out and I get outbidded then I'm sure the 5150 will suffice.

Thing is, the only reason I can really afford to buy the Triple XXX or 5150 is if it is used and less than the 1000 bucks it is priced retail. I would have to sell all but one of my guitars and my current head to buy that head new.

I own a Peavey Triple XXX head and I think this amp is very underrated. A lot of bands use 5150's and it's true they sound good, but why not go for your own style. The Triple XXX really stands out. My only complaint about it would be the cheesy mud-flap design. Just remove this piece of trash and put on a real 1/8'' aluminium custom made diamond plate, your amp will have a killer look, I tell you.

I personally like the silhoutte of the chicks on the frontplate of the amp. Its what makes it unique.

Damn, I just got outbid on the Triple XXX in the last hour while I was at work. I am going to buy a used 5150 if I can get it cheaply enough, and use the 5150 as collateral for buying a new Triple XXX.
