cryptopsy
for some odd reason i cannot get into cryptopsy and i feel im listening to the wrong songs, maybe its the vocals that get to me and i think its also probably because im into more progressive and melodic death. it would be helpful if some of you guys gave me some songs to listen to by them. im especially interested in them because of all the talk surrounding their technical skills. has anyone else had the same problem getting into them or is it just me?

Just you. Unless you`re listening to the wrong songs, even though you usually can`t go wrong with any cryptopsy. What songs have you heard?

Dude.... the vocals suck on the new album.
But for atthegates1234: I'm presuming you listened to songs off either Whisper Supremacy or And Then You'll Beg, with Mike DiSalvo, and yes, his vocals are shit. Listen to the albums None So Vile (their best IMO) or Blasphemy Made Flesh. Anything off those albums should do you good. If it's the case of DiSalvo ruining it for you, then listen to stuff off those albums I reccomended, and if you become a fan of them, then try on DiSalvo, and Once Was Not, wich mind you was a good album, but it's not as good as any of their other's mainly because Jon Levasseur, the main songwriter quit and left us with Alex, the other guitarist.

Whisper supremacy!
Although you may not like the vocals, the music is just sooooooooo good, songs like Emaciate, Loathe and Faceless unknown will blow your mind. This album deffinitly ranks up as one of my top 5 albums of all time. But really, you can`t go wrong with any Cryptopsy.

I have the same problem that you do, atthegates1234. I bought None So Vile and And Then You'll Beg, and the fact that I only really like two songs off of None So Vile makes me not really even want to listen to the other one.

But I can't get over how anyone could like ATYB vocals. DiSalvo sucked the worst on that album.

I don't mind the vocals at all. I know they're not a brutal growling style, but it's nice to hear something different now and then.

Who else said it? Making up false information about mispelled Cryptopsy albums isn't going to impress us. We all know the real name of the album, it's just one person who happened to not type the word "and" in with the album.

And Then You'll Beg is Cryptopsy's meisterwerk. Any self-respecting extreme music fan's collection should not be devoid of such a monumental work of chaotic genius.
Di Salvo's vocals? Since when has any Cryptopsy fan wanted them to play by generic death metal rules? His vocals fit better to the more frantic style that has developed since Lord Worm originally left. Granted, None So Vile is a great album; but it's just so... simplistic for Cryptopsy. All of the following albums hold my attention for much longer.

Yep. It took a while to realise to its full extent, but ATYB is definately Cryptopsy at their most fucked. Nothing like that album has been written before, it has one of the most unique and original riffing styles of all time in the death metal genre. However, I still like WS a bit more simply due to the sheer intensity, it doesn't let down for a second. And of course it comes very close to matching ATYB in the "fuckedness" factor. Also, I think that Lord Worm on NSV is still the best vocal performance on a Cryptopsy album.

I totaly agree about ATYB being their masterwork.
My list would be ATYB>WS>NSV>BMF>OWN(really disappointed
with this album)

That's pretty much how I feel, although I do give None So Vile and Once Was Not a listen on occasion. I'm on a massive Whisper Supremacy drive at the moment and I can definitely see Tim's neat comparison between And Then You'll Beg and Whisper Supremacy, i.e. the latter carries sheer magnified intensity (Emaciate simply sands your face to the bone) while the former resides in a realm (of Reverie?) almost beyond the reaches of conceivable technicality.
I don't think Once Was Not is as bad as some have made out - and it is, once again, different. I thought Alex did a pretty good job as main songwriter and it will be interesting to see how his wings spread with increasing confidence and experience. Unfortunately, I still believe that Cryptopsy lost it's heartbeat when Jon left and this comparison will always be with Alex.

I think Once Was Not is still a good album. Yeah, it's different than what they've done before, but different isn't necessarily bad. If the production was better, it would be a solid album. Not many people would be able to replace Jon, and still hold that genuine cryptopsy sound, but I think Alex did a damn good job, and i'm looking forward to see what comes about in the future.

Jon wrote a significant part of OWN. I have a video of Jon, Alex, Eric and Flo playing an OWN medley (parts of In The Kingdom, Carrionshine and Adeste) from all the way back in 2003.
Anyway, I posted this in another forum in regards to ATYB. Took a while to write but such an album deserves proper attention:
Quote:
Ok, I always thought this was one of their weakest albums (I still thought it kicked arse), but about 3-4 months ago it dawned on me how good this album actually is. I'd say the only Cryptopsy album I like more now is WS. It used to seem like some of the songs were a bit "filler" (My Prodigal Sun, Equivalent Equilibrium, Screams Go Unheard), but I certainly don't think that anymore. Actually I still think that a little bit about My Prodigal Sun, but there are still some sick bits in that song. Also, since I've learned to play some of it on guitar its made me realise something: Noone in DM has ever written riffs anything like what's on this album. I'm now going to proceed to list some of my favourite moments on this album (this could be a long list, watch out).
And Then It Passes:
- Riff at 2:37. That one got me hooked on this song. The ending of that riff is just so chunky and delicious.
- Solo part. Everyone just goes schizo, sounds like they all dropped acid and started improvising.
We Bleed:
- Riff at 3:02, just sounds so heavy. Flo at 3:05 takes that riff to another level. Then the crazy part afterwards and how it leads into the chunky mute/don't mute/mute powerchord riff
- Levasseur's Solo. Duh. Particularly since it's played over riff mentioned just above.
Voice Of Unreason:
- I'd say the bit from 0:01 to 2:53. But in particular, that riff at 0:52. Dear Lord. The closed hi-hats make it even better (ATYB wins award for best use of Hi-hats ever. On second thoughts there's also Unquestionable Presence and Focus. Hmm, tough freaking choice).
- And if you can follow the riff that begins when Mike first comes in, damn, what a mindfuck.
My Prodigal Sun:
- Mainly one bit, at 1:20. Big props to Levasseur for actually remembering what he played when he wrote that.
Shroud:
- That "chorus" kind of riff. So catchy and great use of the two guitars.
- That "fill" riff at 3:17, and how it leads into the next riff.
Soar And Envision Sore Vision:
- In the second riff, at 0:11, how they slow down the first half of the riff, then when they play it again at 0:42 they slow down the other half. Love it.
- 2:32 to 2:50. Again, incredible idea to slow down the first part three notes earlier than your typical DM band probably would. And the weird riff in that section.... mmm mmm.
Equivalent Equilibrium:
- 0:57 to 1:10. Especially how the very first part is slightly different to the rest of the riff.
- 1:55 to 2:27. Damn there is a lot of sliding in that first part, tricky shit. You'd think the headstock would blow its load after that heheh. Then the next part is just damn catchy.
- 2:55 to 3:09. First off that is one awesome sounding drum fill, then the next riff is sweet, then the riff after that..... ooohhh yeah... rhythmically collosal.
Back To The Worms:
- Even though I do like this song, I usually skip it because it's quite out of place on ATYB. I listen to the Ungentle Exhumation version when I'm in the mood for the older stuff.
Screams Go Unheard:
- Well, I'm stating the obvious when I say the Didgeridoo intro could have been a hell of a lot shorter. However, when it's on in the background of the first riff, it sounds awesome.
- Riff at 2:16 (above mentioned riff). It chugs along nicely, but the standout part here is actually Mike Disalvo. This is his best highlight on any Cryptopsy song in my opinion. The vocal patterns completely rape this riff and the make the changeover at 2:31 so damn sick. The big final Didgeridoo blow there sounds immense too.
- Then, the next riff. Quite catchy and the drums are so sick, goddamn goddamn goddamn! But the best part about 'em, and what I consider to be the best drum bit on the album, is how the hi-hat switches from 2nd's to 4th's one bar early at 2:44. No matter how many times I listen to it it always kicks my arse.
- 5:03 to 5:10. The sliding chords on the low strings and the rhythm in which they're played is awesome. There's a slight pause midway and you expect the riff to begin again with the tremolo picking, but alas, more low string chord sliding. Makes that riff even better.
- Lastly, the final riff (after that screaming sample). Holy fuck. How did they come up with that? Each guitar just does whatever the hell it feels like whilst still playing all the right notes. Harmonies all over the place here. This riff is also finished off really well.
Ok, that's all. Not many favourite parts eh? In conclusion I'd say many people don't give this album a fair shot because Mike's vocals are a bit weak, and also I think the true greatness of this album flies over most people's heads. I took me a lot of listens to fully appreciate it, but now I think I do and as a result I listen to it a hell of a lot.
Lastly, I played it twice through at work today. My boss said it sounded like "glass shattering" and the "HUMAN DEMON" bit in Equivalent Equilibrium reminded him of his wife yelling at him. Haha.

hahaha, thats pretty damn funny when so many people seem to think that own sucks and "Jon would have saved it" and all that. Sure, Thats only three songs, but if that was back in 03, chances are that he wrote even more songs or atleast part of them.
And I agree with atyb, great album.

Yeah, I definitely think a lot of people already decided that it would turn out subpar without Jon before they even heard the album.

Or Jon was his own worst critic and that's why he left the band...
Just a theory.
