I am new to playing the bass. I play alot of metal tunes like metallica, black sabbath, etc. I notice when I rest my thumb on a pickup I get alot of vibration put through my hand . Is there any way I can cut down on the vibration. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question.

Right, so are you getting vibrations out of both the pickups (P style and J style) or just the P style pickups? (the ones closer to the neck)

J style Pickup. Is this normal?

Yeah, it does happen, on some of the less pricier basses, and basses that havent been setup properly, all you have to do is tighten the screws on the pickup, if that doesent stop it, it must be something inside or under the pickup that is loose.

I'd say it's pretty normal....I feel the "hum" right through my hand....even when I'm playing my Geddy Lee model Jazz bass, or my Spector. I like the vibration though, thats what makes a bass a bass and if you have an SVT cranked to 8 and play sitting on top of it.....you can shit your pants thats always my excuse when I come home after a night of drinking lol j/k

I think what he means is his pick-up is fully vibrating, like rattling, not normally..not just the sound vibration.
