Well actually, since the SM57 has tailored EQ for Instruments, and the 58 for Vocals, you cant really be wrong in buying the SM57 if your gonna scream and growl down the thing, granted if your gonna be singing clean then... by all means go for the SM58.

If you play guitar however and want a mic you can use for your guitar (or snare/toms) then indeed the SM57 is a good bet.

However if you just want a solid vocal microphone, then going for the industry standard SM58 should suit your needs just fine (for playing live anyway).

singing through a instrument microphone looks retarded. the regular 57 doesn't have shield around it for protection. it's not meant to be used as a vocal mic.

I wouldn't recommend hooking up a 57 to snares or toms either, not even as an overhead for drums, you're far better off using specialised drum mics. (shure pgd's) sm57's are fine for amplifying cabs through a PA. that's their basic use.

Yeah your right it wouldent look right using the SM57 on stage, however as a man on a budget such as myself, using an SM57 is useful for a vocal mic and for an amplifier mic for home project use.

Micing up Snare and Toms and other percussion is also, basic uses for the SM57 believe it or not, maybe not the bass drum due to the proximity effect, but snare and Toms? Should work fine lad.

Anyone who uses a Dynamic as an overhead for a drum kit and/or a cymbal mic is retarded.

I didn't say it can't be used for vocal use but I surely wouldn't recommend it, I've used / tried several mics, samson q1's, samson s2's, allmost every shure incl. the beta's, some sennheisers, the sm58 is hard to beat IMO.

you CAN hook up snare and toms with an sm57 but if you're doing a cd recording, you're not going to be happy with it. if you want the drums to be tight and defined, use specialised mics, you know, the little kits? especially for the snare man, that's the hardest to record decently. Ofcourse the bassdrum needs it's own special mic but actually, that counts for every single part of the drumkit, even the overheads. If you want to do things right, you need to use the right stuff, plain and simple.

Ofcourse, you don't need to buy all that stuff if you want to record, that's why there's good recording studio's who have all that shit and more, in house. the only things you bring are your skills and instruments. Oh and a bag of money, if you're label isn't paying for you

Well.... you seem to be educated on the matter, so now we are in the field of opinion are we not? Some might love the sound of the SM57 (normally it is vocalists who indeed scream or growl etc that dig it, due to the tailored response of the 57, and indeed, the scream or growl is quite akin to a distorted guitar in terms of frequency, much shorter dynamic range however).

But for the lad at the top, live and rehearsals, then yes, SM58 really is your best choice!

thanks and welcome.

I've played a bunch of crate amps through the years, I posted in your other thread, avoiding this one to going off topic.
