Well i usually just play 4 strings, because thats what ive started on and practiced on, and im used to them.. but i do have a couple of 5 strings, and like to pick them up now and then, and im open to trying out basses with more than 6 strings.. i just prefer the spacing of the 4 string, and neck width..

I have a question... How exactly do you tune a 5 string? Is it like B E A D G in standard? Or lower? And if your guitarist plays in D(a step down), do bassists also drop everything a whole step or do they transpose?

its usually easier just to tune down, but you dont have to, and that is how you tune a 5 string.

i picked 6 just becuase they look sweet

I vote 6 because I play 6.. I dig more than 6 though, 7 would be about perfect. 8 is a little too big to be comfortable and any more than that is definitely not for me. 8+ bass guitar strings are too tough to find. It is neat to have that kind of tonal range though, from synth bass pedal notes to beyond the 6-string guitar, under your fingers

Four string. I own both a four and a five, but the four is more comfortable. I like the lighter weight and thinner neck. Plus, Traben has way more tone and sustain than even imaginable in ESP's wet dreams.

i have a 5 string only....but i like 4-strings better (yeah...). I agree with tattered on the neck with and spacing. The smaller neck lets me play longer without hurting and the spacing allows me to play smoothly and clearly. When i play on my 5 string it sounds like a drying moose.

The only reason i own that 5-string is so i can reach those lower notes without downtuning like fuckin crazy

Smile

My dad got his 1976 Fender Precision 4-string converted into a 5-string a few years back....same neck, the strings are a bit closer together....so all he had to do was get a new bridge put on, new nut, extra tuner, and new pickups....and got to keep the width of a 4-string neck....pretty fuckin' sweet, maybe I'll post a pic of it sometime.....it's beeeeeautiful

That sounds pretty cool, the string spacing must be very close though!

more than 6 for looks i've always though more than 6-strings looked cool...
but for playing i'd choose four 'cos that's what i'm used to, no more than 5 though for me as my hands are kinda small and when i tried a 6-string i couldnt really handle it

more than 6...i own a 6, a 5, and a 4 and i love my 6. i chose more than 6 because i want more than 6 and i know i can handle it, i can bend my fingers where the knuckle meets the palm and just my fingers alone are about 1/2 inch longer than the fretboard so i figure i can handle at least a 9 but i dont have the money for it. but i gotta say, i do like the width of 4

That would be awesome to see - definitely post that. Fender made a 6 string bass many years ago that looked like a strat on 'roids. Any one ever see or play one?

[BTW - I tried 5 and 6 and now I only play 4 string]

Depends what I play...
I own a five string + a four string fretless.
For stuff played with 4 strings I prefer 4 stringed
and the same with five strings.
But after all, I think four strings is enough.
