Screaming - Rage Against the Machine / Zack De La Rocha
I am in an alternative rock/rap band called Tijuana, and my part is to do vocals. I rap for the band, rather like zack de la rocha from ratm or the guy from linkin park, but not so much like him. I have songs which need to be screamed such as rage against the machine covers, and zack's screams are out of this world. can anyone tell me what kind of screaming or growling it is, and what do i need to tense or focus on to achieve that distorted yet somewhat high scream such as the end of wake up or bullet in the head. is it a growl, a yell or a normal scream? how do i do it basically!
thanks in advance,
Miguel

i think he growls after the second chorus in bombtrack...
thanks... could you point out any threads that cover exhaled screaming or just give me brief tips on how to do them? i can scream kind of but i really can only get a low tone when i do! he gets high-ish tones sometimes.

RATM doesn't really scream that much. but basically you just, scream. its not really explainable when it comes to zack de la rocha, you just have to have his voice.

try talking really loud. this has worked for me when somebody strikes me in the knee with an iron bar, or stabs me with a spoon. also try gurgling mouthwash until you start crying, at that point your going to want to shave your balls. thats about all the experience ive had, so try looking to the other faces here at metaltabs. and your welcome.

Zach dosen't really scream, he yells. I don't know if he has any technique for it, nor have I ever heard of any article of him discussing his yelling technique (probably because he dosen't have one). You've just got to belt the anger in your voice, which Zach does, and does incredibly well, which makes him so great.

Pitch
Back to the vocal thing... the hardest thing to nail with covering Zack's vocal is most likely the pitch. you got to remember that although you're rapping there is still a pitch. Zach's verses usually pitch well above that of most rappers, for a comparison pitch a RATM track down one tone (most likely from 'D' to 'C') and he'll begin to sound like a big fat homeboy.
Nail the pitch and then apply the aggression. it works for me
