You may want to check out Jackson as well. Although I don't think you're going to get anything truly breath taking for 400$ or under.

Jackson JS30's(Kelly, V, RR, Dinky, and Warrior)... the go for 300$ new, brilliant fucking guitars for cheap. Also a Dean VX is quite nice, or you could grab a used Ibanez, or an Ltd. of some sort. There's a thread for this.

And? JS30's are fucking great. I own a JS30 Kelly and I liked it more than a friend's Gibson LP. It has a super thin neck, string through body, low action and the stock pickups are great if you EQ correctly, not to mention it has assloads of sustain. If you like Jacksons but don't have 500$+ to shell out, this is a good alternative, get a used JS30.

Beat that at that price, bitches. And you still have plenty left out of that 400$ for new pickups and a noisegate.

yeah... i own a js30 and have had it for about a year, the pickups sound like shit. they are extremley muddy, and they crap out in abour 5 months of playing. I also own a dxmg and a gibson les paul..... i wouldnt even compare the js30 to either one of them. you must be fuckin tonedeaf or something.
so shut the fuck up before you give someone bad advise and make yourself look like a dumbass who thinks he knows everything because he doesnt want people telling him the truth about his new peice of shit guitar.

i have a js30 it started out very shitty. i adjusted the trust rod replaced the bridge, pots, pickups, tuners, knobs(for style). and it sounds better than my friends jem and carvin. just depends on how much money ur willing to put into ur guitar.
all that shit that i put in costed about $400 not counting installation fees. another thing that might help is have someone examine ur playing.thats what i did when i bought my dkmg/js30. ask them to write down ur style, what techniques u use and who u sound like. cuz in the end that will help choosing ur guitar. another thing to do is ask urself how much do u play do u like to play etc.. cuz i wouldnt blow 400 some on a guitar i wouldnt play
im glad i got a summer job this year at my uncles. im gonna buy some bitch'n gear.
ohh yea, tone also lies in ur hands

haha... yeah thats what i might do with my js30... and maybe have my friend do some graphics on it as well. right now its just sitting in my bedroom not being played because the pickups shit out on me and i dont have the cash the do everything to it right now.... i may just end up fixing it myself and selling it on ebay and then save some cash this summer and buy a usa soloist.

Ok, please remove the rolls of barb wire from the depths of your ass. I've owned the JS30 for 7 months now and it still kicks ass, so you must be bashing your guitar like monkey if the pickups crapped out or something. I've played other guitars and sure they sound better, but for stock pickups in a mid-range guitar they're not horrible. Just don't use 2 simoultaneously, works best with my EQ settings(no scooped mids and not much bass). I like my JS30, so fuck off.
True, if you're going to spend a lot on modding the guitar like YJM you might as well get a more expensive guitar. But for the time being, I'd rather mod cheap guitars and make them play well. Not everyone can shell out 1000$ on a new instrument.
Another alternative is Kramer guitars. Check out MusicYo.com. The Strikers and Designer kramers are some good shit.

Maybe the guy you're selling it to doesn't know the real price of the thing + what you spent on it. Ignorance is bliss... the bliss is yours, in this case. Maybe you should get into custom guitar making.
What exactly don't you like about the guitar, apart from the pickups? My only real complaint is the fretboard width and medium frets, I have big hands so it's rather annoying at times.

the licenesed floyd rose goes out of tune too easily so i swithed it, switched the pickups cuz they sound like a dying record player, the guitar body is made of thats a plus, new ebony 24 fret fretboard shark inlay, big plus, double bucker body thats a plus, double locking major plus, pretty versital a good plus, has a soloist body/ cept wood is alder, pretty light thats a plus. knobs are ok, but skull knobs look better
