String skipping...

Right, so i've got a problem with string skipping in this fashion:

Quote:
----------------------------
----------------------------
----------------------------
-----7----9----10---9----7--
----------------------------
--00---00---00---00---00----

and similarly with single open notes as opposed to doubles.

When ever i play these, i always use downpicking for this, and im really sloppy, hitting the string between the two im trying to play. Basically, it shounds shite, and i'd like the advice of you chaps on how i should be playing it?

Cheers

Plain old fashioned 'start slow, build speed', I believe... I dont think theres any real technique or hints aside from that. Sorry.

Oh and downpick it all or alternate (ie attack the upper melody in that example from above), again, no set technique, it doesnt really matter.

There's no magic anser, but keep practicing and see how this picking sequence effects it:

D----7----9
A------------
E-00---00----
--dd-d-ud-d--etc

If it's the actual mechanic of string skipping you want to learn, it's easier to grasp using notes that arn't open strings due to ease of control and hand placement. Try doing it between frets 9-12 on the neck

UD D UD D etc

In my opinion i think thats easiest. that way you can use the downstrokes on the D string to kind of bounce back to the E string.

Thats how i'd play it too, its just practise. It shouldnt be too hard since the bottom string is just open, and palm muted im guessing. Just make sure you 'hop' the pick over the A string.

to get better at string skipping, practice and master the main riff from alter of sacrifice (the riff after the intro power chords).

that worked wonders for me, it led me on to even hard string skipping, check it out, and remember, start SLOW and repeat it ALOT

Is there a reason you always use downpicking, why don't you alternate the picking going up and down. That picks up speed a lot with less energy.

well its up to you obviously, but since you have to pick twice on E string then only once on the D string if you used strict alternate picking the strokes wont match up each time the pattern repeats. It would ever 2 times though if you like doing it like that.

I'd alt pick the whole thing, unless it's quite slow. Just practice
