Holy Shit It's Finally Done!
It's finally done!
I'm officially finished refinishing my guitar. This project has lasted me months and months due to finding time for me and my dad. A lil background on the project. It was free! I got the paint from a friend of my brothers, he had a shitload of car paints lying around. I got the clear, thinner, and harderner from a friend of mines friend who works for a car paint store. Only thing I had to furnish was the paint stripper, primer, and sandpaper, which totals about $20 at the most.
Now, don't post if you wanna just tell me how shitty of a job I done or how ugly or unprofessional the paint looks. I don't give a shit, it was free, it looks 100x better than what it used to, I'm satisfied. I took pictures along the process, so I can make a website to show others how to refinish theirs on their own. Here's some of the pictures
1. Before Shot Upper Body
2. Before Shot Bridge End Notice the eva bullshit and the gash they took out.
3. Time To Strip It The asshole before me painted over the original paint, which looked pretty killer.
4. Sanding And Filling
5. Priming And Filling Imperfections
and tada!
6. The Finished Product Pictures never do justice, it's actually a darker looking blue than what the camera/flash reveals.
I love the sparkle in the paint and with the clear... DAMN! I get a hardon every time I look at it. I owe it all to my dad. He was a painter for several years and has done alot of woodwork (custom cabinets, floors, etc). Shouts out to him!

And you though we would post how shity it looked For fucks sake dude! It really doesn't get better then that unless you paint fine art on it.
Good job dude!
Edit: Do take the paint off the neck pocket just in case you didn't know. You want mostly wood on wood at the neck joint.

Great job. I thought it looked allright with the silver, but I see why you decided to refinish it. I'd be pretty pissed if someone took a chunk out of my axe just to put a little screw on there to enable me to tune to drop D.
Like I said, silver was allright, or so I thought, until I saw the blue. It looks sexy as hell. Keep up the good work, I might let you do mine sometime. You should only be so lucky.

Just some more information about this project.
The color is actually called Denim Blue. It's acrylic enamel paint (typical auto paint). The before pictures don't really show the reason why I wanted to repaint it, but apparently the guy who painted the silver done a terrible job! The paint started cracking all over the guitar. It was horrible, lost all its smoothness to the finish, if you zoom in on the before pictures and look at the paint, you'll see all the runners in the paint where its flaked, they mostly run horizontal, plus there was several chips and dings. In one of the pics, there was a chip missing right below the front pickup in the crevice of the lower wing. I think I have other pictures showing just how shitty the paintjob and body was in. I'll make sure to link to my website once I make it.
Soul: Thanks for the information, I didn't know to take the paint off the neck pocket. Appreciate it!
Before I even put this thing together, I'm gonna redo all the electronics, because the soldering job was half ass, and a few minor components are wore out. I'm also gonna fit it with a PAFpro/X2N combo! I'm totally stoked. Thanks for the replies everyone, I really do appreciate it!

Arcylic paint? Won't that give it a different sound? Regardless, awesome paintjob man, I wish I had all the tools and patience to repaint my Ironbird white.

You make me wonder now... I'm all about others opinions. Kinda hard for me to try em out before I get em. I'm just going primarly on what others think works well with a X2N. I could always go the active route. There's always people to support both sides, so it's real confusing to make desicions unless you can sample it for yourself. That's my position. Anyways, thanks for all the replies on how it looks!

No problem dude. Be careful not to chip that badass paint job while cleaning the neck joint. Key word is "mostly wood on wood"! It doesn't have to be all wood. Please keep that badass finish nice, but I guess it isn't like you couldn't do a nother sweet paint job.
Post pics of the built guitar, please.

Yeah car painters can usually do guitars. Not car shops though, they might look at you a bit funny if you go to a car yard and ask them to paint your guitar.

Fuckin great job man!!!! also DO NOT put your guitar on a guitar stand because the rubber will eat away the finish. this is because lacquer takes 1 year to become fully hardened.

Okay,
I got the neck pocket stripped. I left the very very small edge of the pocket with paint so it wouldn't show or chip the outside. This shouldn't matter should it? It won't mess up the straightness of the neck surely. It's like less than a 1/16". Should I go ahead and sand that or something? There's only like a couple coats of primer and a coat or so of paint.

No I'm not painting the neck. I just didn't want to strip it all the way to the edge so it wouldn't show when I bolt the neck back on.

COMPLETED!
I finally got it squared away. Neck relief was really bad. I had to turn the truss rod almost 1 full revolution. I had the neck off with no tension for over 5 months. I'm still learning, but it's done and plays like a dream, looks like a dream, and even sounds like a dream. Check it out!!

I love this combo! The X2N does so well with my metal style leads and rhythm for that fact. Pinch harmonics have never been easier. I can even pinch low E EASILY! I really like the low end chunky aggressive output for rhythms, and the searing high end bit on leads. It's a noisy fucker though, better have a noise gate. The PAFpro is everything I ever wanted in a neck pickup. It's got this super punchy glassy sound. I can't really compare it to anything, because all I've ever heard were shit stock pickups, but it really gives me the smooth and glassy sound I want. It even sounds good with a lil overdrive kicked in. I'll post some audio clips when my head comes in. Thanks for the replies

Awesome RG man. I dont really understand what you mean by "glassy" sound, but Ill wait for the sound clips to come in. Also, I didnt like the color. Too sparkly. But it looks nice otherwise.
