Volume Distortion and Gain Distortion??

Is guitar distortion created by increasing the gain above its capacity clipping level? I realized when you increase an audio track above its volume clipping level it sounds really bad; but if you increase an audio track above its gain clipping level it sounds bigger but not worse. What is the difference between volume clipping level and gain clipping level? In metal when people record their growls do they adjust the gain level above its clipping level to give it the distorted sound (isn't that what distortion is)? In all my tracks except my newest one I always adjusted the gain level above the gain clip level (not the volume clip level) for vocals and it sounded better for me. In my newest track I adjusted the gain for vocals below the gain clipping level and it sounded to thin for me. Does it sound thin for you? http://songs.hijazi.us/OpiumDreams.mp3.

The first growl you did sounded fine, the guitar tracks sounded like they had too much gain & treble.
