Crate Vintage Club 50?
Alright I found one of these things for 100$ but the thing is he says that it needs some electronic work. Anyone think its worth it. I tried the amp and it was golden. I loved it. But I just don't know how much work this thing could need. I need a 212 for a cab anyway so if I don't get it working I guess I could always take that route.
Discuss.

What is exactly wrong with it. If it's a cheap fix, then go for it. I tried one of those out a few years ago, nice and full overdrive with great harmonics (I liked it more then the blue voodoo sitting next to it).

Well I was thinking of getting a schematic and trying making it a DYI project. My dad has a fairly good understanding of electronics and whatnot so I figure he could probably help me.

Just as long as you find out exactly what needs to be done before you buy it.

Thanks man. Its greatly appreciated. If I can't figure anything out I'll take it in to school to my electro-tech teacher who is the biggest dick ever.
He's also got a greasy mullet.

Ok so I emailed him and he said that the reason was that when he plugged it in one day the tubes were lighting up, the leds were on but there was no sound. Shortly after that he smelt smoke. What does everyone think?

if everything was on and the tubes don't look to weird, but there is no sound... check the fuses...
and how sure was he that he was smelling smoke?
those amps get hot as fuck, if someone touched the tubes with their greasey hands, the tubes will burn it up.

For $100 you can't lose even in the worst case and it needs a new transformer or tubes. I'm sure you could find some ET to do it for cheap or free.
Best case, a fuse blew.

Ok. Time to bring this amp back up.
I just found one of these yesterday at a yard sale that had been in storage for 2 years. I brought a guitar over to try it out and holy shit! The thing doesn't look like much but it will produce a cranked JCM 800 tone. I talked the guy down to $100 and bought it. Today I took it apart to clean and inspect. The tubes have been replaced with quality tubes and a extension speaker mod has been added. Other than that, everything else looks original. The amp is mostly tube driven with analog components but the spring reverb tank is op amp driven via an IC chip ( solid state ) with a tube buffered FX loop. Its a pretty cool design really and can be modded very easy. I figured it would sell for a good price.
It was dirty and it had a burning smell to it, but after I cleaned everything the burning smell went away. I used my GT-8 to boost the input with a few different types of pedal models and the amp was breathing fire. Then I hooked it to my Randall 4x12 cab and had serious thoughts about keeping it. Fat rich wonderful tone from four Sovtek EL84 power tubes and four 12AX7 premies.
I think I'm going to keep it, turn it into a head unit, play with a few different tube combos, and add a little added boost mod. I didn't think Crate could make anything like this. Don't be afraid of this amp people. It's a sleeper metal amp for sure.

I used to own a Crate vintage club 50 2x12. Sold it, and should'nt have. With a DS-1, it sounds more 'saturated'. A little later down the road when I start playing for performing live again, I'll be using a boosted Vintage club with an Avatar 4x12 ( maybe. I could go with something else, I'll never know until I do ).
