Help getting a great metal sound with the equipment I have.
Hey there everyone.
My band, we're trying to record a CD on our own and we are trying to get a tight and professional metal sound. We have a Yamaha AW16G recorder and a Shure SM57 to record with.
This is the gear my axeman has.
Marshall AVT 150H and 2 4x12 cabs.
Digitech Metal Master Pedal
Stageworks 15band EQ
Washburn Dime 333 with Dimebucker in bridge.
Could anyone help me out with how I should arrange the levels, EQ, and mic placement? Anything would really help. Thanks
Dave

hmm what kind of metal sound are you going for? Pantera I'd assume. Try putting the amp on the overdrive/distortion channel, Eq it with trebble a lil less than half, mids about the same, bass about 3/4s, presence a lil less than the bass, Then put the eq in the loop in a V shape.

Ditch the Metal master, and use the amps gain.Roll down the Mids, plenty of treble and bass, gain right up.If he already has the 15 band tweaked, then just pop it in the loop, otherwise sit down with it for ages and find a decent setting.

Are you in a recording studio? I'm sure you can get a tech guy to help you out or something. Have you thought of using plain direct recording rather than amp micing? All I can suggest is experimenting with everything you can think of.

Yeah, it's a decent head, no need for a dist pedal. But if the gain isn't enough get a booster/overdrive pedal of some sort, but using a cheap-ish pedal on such a nice piece of equipment is blasphemy.
