who else is doing it. im the only guitarist in my school that tried out. tomm i get my music. so know i have to go to school with a bunch of shit. a guitar case, a trumpet case, books, bookbag,clothes(for gym), practice amp...how can i manage all this shit, well just getting on the bus. being freshman sucks, cuz i have no ride. and my parents are at work. my band teacher will kill me if i dont practice trumpet, cuz im 1st chair. and im not going to leave my guitar at school, cuz they dont lock it up. trust me i know. god damn.

Ahh......I remember my "jazz" band in high school. Me and a few of my friends were the only ones that tried out for it. Basically turned it into a metal band. Our band teacher was pretty fucking cool too. He would order us stuff to use at school and write it off as a school expense. I remember I had him order a fender american fat strat and a boss gt-6. The bass player (now bassist in my current band) had him order a G&L jazz bass and a boss pedal board with a bass limiter/expander pedal, a bass chorus pedal, and a bass overdrive.

Good times. Have fun with it dude. Don't expect it to be an easy ride though. Chances are your instructor will be a little strict about what you play.

What? I've never heard of a school that doesn't lock up. All schools have intricate alarm systems, and they're supposed to lock every door that has a lock--especially practice rooms, and the orchestra/band hall. And I'm willing to bet that your school has school owned instruments.

im in my highschools jazz band. ablility wise the jazz band is good but the kids in it are a bunch of tools.

I considered strongly going in to my school's jazz band but I didn't know about sign up until after it was too late

I carry my stuff to my dorm or just leave it in the band hall. Haven't had anybody touch my shit yet. . . Probably because they realize I am poor and would kill them. but eh it works for all kinds.

Jazz band sure is a hell of a lot of work though. How well do you know your theory/chords? If you aren't great at it theres a great book I use for jazz band as a reference, called "Chords Galore". It's part of the Mel Bay series of books and is a useful tool in creating chords for every context on the fly. It covers the standard maj7, min7, dominant7, maj 6, min 6, ninths, thirteens, etc. Plus it covers the inversions of many of the chords. Equipment wise, you could probably get away using a headphone amp that you can carry in your bookbag, most jazz bands don't have the guitars that audible (at least in the beginning).

when you start out site-reading big band charts keep in mind that you can play the base chord of altered chords until you get time at home to figure out the real voicings. < makes first time reading much easier.

i know how to read that stuff. i learnd how over summer. but yea thats true about alterd chords
