What the fuck am I doing?

I got back 3 days ago from a 3 week vacation in which I did not bring my guitar with me, so naturally I was a bit rusty when I picked it up again but I quickly got me fingering solid again. The problem is that I seem to have poor inspiration and ability to play something that sounds good. I keep playing the same crap over and over and then just random atonal crap, when I know I can do much more than that. Has anyone ever been in this situation or am I just starting to get disillusioned with playing guitar? It's like I have no idea where to go next, I feel like I don't know how to play anything now. Any ideas?

Learn and relearn your modes. Do speed and muscle memory exercises. Play Jazz, Rock, blues, metal, flamenco or any other music you can get your hands on. For God's sake, DONT stop playing guitar man, you'll regret it forever.

I just don't know what to learn next, that's all. I start learning a song then I just get bored. I think I should try more melodic stuff, something that isn't death metal because that's 95% of what I play all the time.

I don't even know what a mode is. At most I'll give you some pentatonics and Egyptian/middle Eastern sounding scales. A mode = some sort of scale? I think that might be what I need. I can't improvise without something in the background for shit.

my suggestion is to relax and don't force it...if you are trying to making something sound cool or trying to make some a certain way you are just going to go no where. I write my best stuff when I'm just goofing off on the guitar. Sometimes I pick it up and I'm forcing it to much and I get bored and quit...other times I begin without the intention to play for a long time and i do because I'm flowing really well.

The other suggestion would be to listen to bands/music that you don't listen to on a regular basis. I was sitting here listening to a band I don't listen to a ton one day and I was like oh I want to play guitar...picked it up and had a cool riff and some other shit too...i don't know don't fret to much...

Its a difficult thing. I go through phases where I dont pick up my guitar to play for a week or so, maybe through lack of motivation or too busy, but it always comes back. Do you try writing your own stuff? It really picked me up to write stuff. Theres really not much help I can give (though im only one user) but If i were you id just approach the guitar totally open minded and just try getting noises and stuff out of it. Doesnt matter what, or if they are "real" techniques, just mess about, find riffs you wanna play, learn em, move on. Its not ideal technique, but it could get you back in to the swing of things.

This sounds like another "give me some songs to learn, because I don't know what to practice" thread....

I think you just gotta try your hand at something that isn't metal. Try out some classical or some progressive. Listening to these two genres is a great way to broaden you views to music. Chances are you'll learn some new techniques or new ways to use old ones as you go as well.

Also, look around and see if there is a teacher in your area. They'll more than likely have different tastes than you and can add a little change in the way you normally play. Just don't quit playing dude. Thats probably the worst way to deal with unmotivation.

I'd think most of us have enough tunes from our favorite bands we'd like to play but havnt leaned yet....that's what I do.
Pick a tune you like....learn it.

Learning the boring theory shit aint gonna inspire anyone if you ask me. What you need is to have a hard search around and find a new band and listen to their music, im not sure what your style is, but im sure theres something you havent heard which will get your juices flowing.

Trust me i feel the same way you do every now and again.

My advice would either be:

a) Learn those Cynic tabs at www.cynicalsphere.com (not death metal, melodic, tricky as fuck etc...)
b) Just not play for a while. Take up another hobby, like masturbation. Soon enough you'll be frothing at the mouth for a bit of guit-box brutality.

Buy Speed Mechanics by Troy Stetina. It helps you improve no matter how good you are and is extremely fun.
