Controlled use of feedback

How can I use feedback to my advantage, say, to get it to feedback in certain pitches. I'm trying to sorta use it as a subtle background "melody" or something. Right now there doesn't really seem to be any kinda rhyme or reason to how my guitar feedsback.

My advice

1. Dont use feedback. its annoying and overused.
2. But if you MUST use feedback. If your guitar has a floating tremolo you can make your guitar do cool feedback pitch changes by pulling or pushing the trem arm when feeding.

I do it alot in my band. What I do is this:

I turn on my digital whammy pedal, delay, and reverb (and set the whammy so it shifts to lower octaves as I move the pedal up) and as I begin to feed back, I move the pedal down so that its no longer a ear-screeching sound, but a very cool ambience.

You could do it with a regular whammy pedal too.

I've never heard of feedback destroying speakers, as long as the volume is cranked to 11.

As soon as I get my goddamn recording system back up, I'll record some cool feedback work.

I've swelled feedback a few times.. didn't sound horrible. Not very useful though.

BLS, yeah, I'm thinking of swelling it in some way. And kinda like how you'd use natural harmonics picked in some arrangement. Just a very simple harmony or something, but I just need to be able to change the pitch and not let it just feedback randomly on its own. Good tips so far.

Use pinch harmonics instand - much more cantrolable and got cooler sound

Feedback is really a mood fitting sort of thing.....(bad example) but listen to slayer when they transition from postmortem to raining blood (live of course)....it just helps to give a chaotic feel on occasion....especially if you manipulate it with a trem.

That what it is useful for.
