poweramp?? more gain??
couldnt find an answer in the threads ive searched.
i use a preamp (digitech gsop 2101) and i finaly got some good sounds coming from it so i decided to keap it. i use the preamp with no poweramp at the moment. The preamp could use some more gain, but i dont wanna use a overdrive pedal to boost it,
I know powertubes will distort the sound in their own way, but wil this also add gain to the preamp sound????
since a head only get its full gain when you krank those powertubes
right?? thats all i needed to know

well uhm.. kinda depends if you use a tube or s.s. power amp.
S.S. distortion on a poweramp would be a bad thing..

ever played a tube head??? if you did you'll know that when u have the master volume (wich usualy drives the poweramp tubes) set to 1 u wont have as much distortion as when u set your master volume to 10, there for it distort the sound more right??
atleast that was the case on my engl savage 60 head
but will this also increase the gain?? if u use a tube poweramp with a tube preamp?

yes, buy playing your preamp through a tube poweramp at high volumes, you have the powertube saturation and the speaker breakup going on, it will make you sound thicker, more powerfull, and with an increased feeling of gain.

From my experience, pushing a poweramp doesn't add a whole lot of gain. It adds some major balls to your tone though. MAJOR crunch added to your palm mutes. Just makes a guitar sound better to my ears.

Usually if you think you need more gain, you probably don't. For instance, I use a Digitech GSP 21 Legend (a dumbed down version of what you have, no S-Discs and not as many effects) and I thought it would never sound good until I got my cabinet. The thing made it come to life, and I actually backed off the gain a bit. I'll be getting a peavey classic 50/50 on friday so I'm sure those little bulbs of tone can only add to the sound.

+1
i find the more i practice, the less gain i need... like my splawn i keep the gain at 5, and on my powerball on the low gain mode i only have it at 4. still plenty to sound "brutal" but still toneful and clear, less compression. as i turn the amp up more sometimes i even back of the gain a little more.
powertube grit and speaker breakup arent really going to sound like you put a tube screamer in front of it or anything drastic, but you'll notice more power in your sound.

Exactly. It also helps that I have duncan livewires, but I think I'll be getting EMG's on my next 2 guitars.

I used to be like this. Until I started realizing that it was compromising my tone. If you like the basic tone you have, run it through a tube power amp and 4x12, maybe the "magic" those two items work will be enough.
