Terrorizor Albums of 2005

OK, it's January so that means two things: you're skint after Christmas and Terrorizor decide which band they would like to fellate obsessively this year.

The top 40 albums of 2005, according to the writers of said publication are as follows:

1. Meshuggah - Catch 33 (Nuclear Blast)
2. Jesu - Jesu (Hydra Head)
3. Cathedral - The Garden of Unearthly Delights (Nuclear Blast)
4. Deathspell Omega - Kenose (Norma Evangelium Diaboli)
5. Opeth - Ghost Reveries (Roadrunner)
6. The Axis of Perdition - Deleted Scenes From the Transition Hospital (Code 666)
7. Burst - Origo (Relapse)
8. Candlemass - Candlemass (Nuclear Blast)

It not a bad list, I'm glad to see deathspell omega made it so high. But I agree, if Mesmerize and Hypnotize made it, Once Was Not should have been at least been mentioned.

I wonder, now that I've seen some responses to this thread: what type of list do you people expect from this sort of thing?

I don't really see what separates Elephant Riders from any later Clutch record.

Random thoughts:

All that you can realistically expect from a list like this is that they get most of the really good releases of the year in with all the more mediocre stuff. I get the impression that this magazine is trying to be a KVLT as possible with some of those picks, especially the writer's top 10.

They missed most of my Top for '05... Behemoth... November's Doom...

Napalm Death, SOAD, Arch Enemy and Bolt Thrower do not belong on that list. All their releases were standard.

Meshuggah at #1 has only one explanation - someone threw a big metal-related hissy-fit in the editorial meeting and proclaimed the album was absolute genius and he'd never work again unless it was first. I did notice that reviews disagreed very violently about this album... I fell into the "I've heard chopped time signatures before and you can't just impress me with quirky shit any more, you bunch of tubfucking groinal butterpats" camp myself.

Not including Corrosion of Conformity is halfway between criminally negligent and merely retarded.

I love Opeth enough as much as the next bastard, but can we get their balls off our collective metal chin... please? Ghost Reveries was definitely NOT THAT GOOD.

Reader list is much less irritating that Staff list.

wheres cky- an answer can be found

its about as metal as clutch is. and the singer/riff writer is responsible for a ton of people getting into metal. also for organizing the upcoming death tribute album

James Murphy isn't in CKY, Transient.

Clutch isn't metal at all, but I don't think it matters much.

And yeah, Jim's claim is more or less what I was getting at: placement doesn't really matter. You have to expect them to get some of the very good in a random assortment with the mediocre, with one or two obvious picks nowhere to be found. The actual placement doesn't mean anything, even probably to the people who made the list. Possibly especially to them.

I totally agree. I have every album, and love 'em all. I think it's the southern blues sound that makes their sound as unique as it is.

but i never said that murphster was in cky. i wouldnt say something like that. i practically follow cky with a pen and paper around, writing down everything they do and say

James started before I'd ever heard of CKY (and I was closing CKY threads in this here forum back before almost anybody here was a member), and he's been the one running around the country, taking time out of his own schedule in order to accomodate the schedules of the various contributors (including Deron Miller) he's recording to compile the performances into a whole. Miller seemed to get the project going again when it stalled out, but it's James's baby and at least a handful of the people who play on the record are there because of him.

Pelican and Isis are in that same kind of soundgroup that's apparently referred to as 'post-hardcore.' They do sound similar in certain ways. I like Pelican less.

Clutch has the funk. The funk helps. Fallon's voice is also incredible. Plus the Southern Blues-Rock.

Thanks, guys. Think I might try them out.

Has anbody got any comments on that Red Sparowes album? For some reason I'm intrigued by the description in the magazine.

Rature: I can strongly recommend Isis, particularly the Oceanic and Panopticon albums - think of a much, much heavier Tool with better ambience and a more vivid concept to their sound. I think Aaron Turner's vocals are better too: a lot harsher and more abrasive even when sung (relatively) cleanly.
