I wanted to see Holy Mountain, but a friend told me that if
in "normality" and understanding El Topo is an 8,Holy Mountain
is a 2!!!That alarmed me a bit.I'll probably see it eventually
but I'm a bit scared by that comment. What about Santa Sagre?seen it?

i agree. i fucking loved that movie. it was probably the best horror film i've seen in a long time.

has anyone seen everything is illuminated? I havent. I read the novel and its one of my favorite novels, i am just afraid that the movie might be shit in comparison. that is usually the way with movies made on the basis of books.

It usually is inferior because you have specific lit-related expectations, and cinema is not literature and sucks whenever it tries to be. Other times it's just because you can't take the risks when making a large, expensive film you can make when writing a book. And finally it often sucks because a lot of movies just sick.
That said, and not knowing the actual book, the film Everything is Illuminated is pretty good. Liev Schriber had some very well though out and well-executed editing and a decent visual sense, both of which are good, but I remember the film feeling overly episodic, and, when it got to the whole Holocaust revelation stuff, overly sentimental. And then very bouncy at the end. I'm not sure how that matches up to the book.

Good Movie
I recently watched the movie/documentary Martial Law 9/11: Rise Of The Police State by Alex Jones, and I was wondering if anyone here had seen it, and if you have what you thought about it? I found it incredibly interesting. He draws many great connections between the bush administraion and facism, and exposes many fallacies and the true goals of certain 'leaders'. The link gives a great overview, and even though I was conecerned in general about the world before watching this, this made my fears a little clearer. I definetly recommend this film, there is some amazing footage, and I believe more people should do what this guy does.
Here is the trailer for the above documentary.

Watched a ton of films in the past few days:
X-Men I/II - Pretty good, as far as comic book adaptations go.
Spiderman II - As above.
The Hulk - Awful.
A Clockwork Orange - Brilliant. Someone here mentioned the use of Russian in the film, and yes, practically all the words you wouldn't understand are Russian. Moloko, malchik, etc.
On to re-watching Taxi Driver...

Just watched all five Dirty Harry movies. The first four comprise of solid cop action, while the last one is kind of mediocre.
I'm on a bit of Clint Eastwood kick, re-watched The Good The Bad and The Ugly, my favourite Western ever, and I'm about to watch the two Fistful of Dollars movies to see if they fare any better.

Dirty Harry is my fav I don't know if you realise that the film is based on real life serial killer known as the Zodiac who police were never able to capture(hence the character in the film is called Scorpio if I remember). Magnum Force and the Enforcer ain't too bad either, mind you it's been years since I've seen Sudden Impact and Dead Pool!
My other fav Clint Eastwood movies are Play Misty For Me, The Fistful trilogy, from which The Good, The Bad and the Ugly comes out top and I really like High Plains Drifter also as it's a nice twist on the western 'loner' theme.

That's right, the Japanes director was a big influence on Sergio Leone and the film you're thinking of is Yojimbo and Fistful of Dollars is pretty much a straight remake of it.
Also Akira Kurosawa's film Seven Samurai were plundered for The Magnificent Seven.
Also Quentin Tarrantino lifted huge chunks from a Chow Yung Fat film called Hong Kong Story for Reservoir Dogs right down to the bleeding cop who infiltrated a gang and confesses when dying. To all the gang members simultaneously pulling guns on each other and other plot lines. Though I don't remember any ears being severed

Movies
Best movies:
All of Tarantinos stuff especially Kill Bill 1&2 (Jackie Brown was so-so.)
The first Matrix
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Usual Suspects
Full Metal Jacket (Even though I've seen it so many times I'm sick of it.)
Original Star Wars and Indy Jones of course.
The Sci-Fi Channel version of Dune and Children of Dune were pretty good.
And how can we forget This Is Spinal Tap?

Just saw Tombstone, a movie based on Wyatt Earp. Surprisingly, Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell were quite effective in their roles.

i just seen andre rubliev by tarkovsky all the way thru.
man they set a fucking cow on fire and obviously slaughtered a horse after forcing it to fall down a flight of stair. thats hardcore shit, i missed those parts before. i nearly freaked out when i realized that was a real cow, did they really need to do that to get the point across? man, i bet they didnt even think twice about that shit too, probably ate the damn thing afterwords
those tartar guys had some mean fu-manchu mullets, those dudes even stole rublievs mute,shit-eating,dumb as rock, bitch. if i was rubliev id move the fuck outta russia, fuck, if i was in russia now id run in the direction of closest border. the country is one continous, timeless, eternal curse. an immortal bastion of misery, every tarkovsky film ive seen is a harsh bummer, good movies, just very fucking bleak.
i also seen some movies made by the tetsuo iron man director
tokyo fist
gemini
vital
very wierd and different movies, all good. highly recommendable. one complaint tho. this guy is the master of the "shaky camera so everything is out of focus and kinda annoying" he over does it but it doesnt kill these movies. i do however love the use of heavy breathing and grunting, insect noises, close up shots of peoples faces and general wierdness thats kinda his trademark. the plots to gemini and vital are really interesting

Well, I just saw Click. Hillarious, some parts were just fucking gold, I love Sandler's humour style.... Waterboy and Billy Madison are two of my favourite movies, but this film is pretty bad.
For some reason it gets so fucking sad that the pretentious lowies I was with found the need to cry and all... But I just sat there like a big man, i'm cool and tough.
haha, anyway, Shittiest idea, plot and resolution ever (it was all just a dream! pfft.)

Best Clint Eastwood was his first cameo as a lab tech in Revenge of the Creature. It was a sequel to The Creature from the Black Lagoon which was a great old 50's 3-d movie. He's so young in it. Dad and I used to watch him in an old western every week, but heck if I remember which now. He also would take me and mom to those old spag westerns at the drive-in and that's when I got into the Yardbirds and QMS. I was there.

Jet Li? I'm guessing it went out under a different name in some countries, as when I watched it it was called 'Unleashed' Jet Li is a bit nails ain't he eh! It was good to see Bob Hoskins on the big screen again, where's he been?
Also watched Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy, Night Watch, Man Bites Dog, Azumi and In to the Mirror. All pretty damn fine flicks. Just have Lady Vengeance to watch!

Ernest in the Army was quite possibly the most terrible film I've ever seen, or perhaps the most awful thing I've seen with my eyeballs.

just saw malcolm x, by spike lee.
i feel this is a fantastic, historically accurate film depicting his life, struggle, message and demise. it was a very important movie because there is alot of misconception about malcolm in the mainstream. i enjoyed this movie.
but however, mr lee left out a few small details about elijiah muhammad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elijah_Muhammad
this guy is a pure, tinfoil hat wearing, self proclaimed one man monster truck rally. read the bio, its self explainatory. i have a deep interest in cult figures, self made messiahs, lunatics who have influence, charisma to form large groups of brainwashed followers. mr lee left out the best parts on mr elijah
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallace_Fard_Muhammad
elijahs mentor ^^
thier whole contraversial black empowerment ideology does not even fucking compare to the other non-islam shit they imposed on it. they were possibly the first ufo cult. L ron hubbard aint got shit on mr Wallace. fascinating, but why did he leave this stuff out?

valley of the wolves, iraq. turkish movie dealing with iraq war.
said to be anti-american,anti semetic agitation/propaganda piece disguised as a b-movie action flick. inspired by real events dealing with marines capturing turkish<i guess iraqi turks>officers and taking them to abu graib. it was a humiliating event for turkey i guess. also features gary busey who portrays a jewish doctor who steals organs from iraqi prisoners and apperently sells them to the west.
i havent seen this, but i really, really want to. this movie is in part revenge for "midnight express"<a movie made 30 something years ago mind you>, they even went as far as getting a greek<ethnic greek american>actor billy zane as the role of the villian. its also the highest grossing movie to come out of turkey. hailed by politicians there even tho turkey IS a strategic partner in the war with iraq/afganistan/terror.
anyone seen it yet? i know it showed in europe to alot press and contraversy. i think im gonna look for it, possibly buy it off the web sometime

Tito Ortiz is an actor now?
If it's just a reverse Midnight Express, it shouldn't be controversial. If it's more than that, maybe it should. It's hard to tell with the hysterical way people react to everything.

Has anyone talked about the Big Lebowski? Because if not, they shouldn't have. And if I did previously, I must reiterate, this movie kicks absolute ass.

i guess he wants to make a career in acting which sounds more profitable and worthwhile than cagefighting in the long term scheme of things. alot of americans are calling for the heads of the americans in the film which i disagree with. i dont think its anything more than movies that depicted middle-eastern muslims in the same light.
midnight express was very, very contraversial to the turkish people and it is, i think, still banned in that country. the film was made in greece and with greeks acting in the roles of most of the turks. the common defense of the film at that time was "its just a movie, if you dont like it,dont watch" or "we maintain the right to express out views freely as you are given the right to disagree with the content, in the end its just art." so now the table has turned and this type of defense is used for the valley of the wolves. so i think and have read up on alot of people drawing paralels between these movies.
http://www.valleyofthewolvesiraq.com/high/main.html
watch the trailer.
i guess what fascinates me is its seems like a "hollywood" formula to an action movie but comming from the opposing point of view directly against america. it also give us a very good insightful look into alot of the muslim's fear-mongering with hatred for jews and the west thinly disguise under thier own nationalism and religion. america has done the same kind of thing against many cultures for decades. in the end its probably nothing more than a rambo movie or delta force done in reverse.

I guarantee that Busey and Zane get pulled over by customs for a long talk next time they travel into America, as this is the pattern established by the last few actors in 'political' movies.
To be honest, what's sauce for the goose is sauce for America. I've yet to find something to like about Turkey, and this movie doesn't look like it's going to be any good, but why not this movie?

i saw this movie "the big white" and it had so many big actors in it, yet i've never heard of it before. anyways, it was pretty trippy, more asthetically pleasing than acting, but the camera shots were like photographs.
Robin Williams
Giabani Rebessi (sp?)
Woody Harleson
and many others....
rottentomatoes.com gave it a shit review, but i would beg to differ. it is a dark comedy similar to fargo and eternal sunshine

Giovanni Ribisi. Never heard of The Big White.
The ending to Cache was awesome. You just wanted a story, which is your own damn fault.

Just watched Lost in Translation. The film surprised me quite a bit. I wasn't expecting to like it, but it turned out to be quite enjoyable. Beatifully shot and thoroughly atmospheric.

I enjoyed it from a cinematic perspective, but I thought everything else(including the predictable storyline) was terrible.
I watched this movie tonight called "Whole New Thing"...which was shot in Halifax. What a fucked up movie, it was about a counter culture family, whose 13 year old son wanted to fuck his male english teacher, while his mom was having an affair with his dad.
Christ, I didn't think this country that liberal?

i saw red dragon. it was better than i expected. i watch it again with the commentary and realized alot of plot flaws indicated by the director, which is kinda funny because it lowers my opinion of the movie. but at least the director was honest about the difficulty in making the movie.
im about to watch some sonny chiba movies, im psyched

I'm slowly becomming a Japanese horror movie buff. From what I've seen, they all have extremely interesting and twisted story lines, plus superb action to go along with it. A few off hand that I highly recommend are 'Suicide Club', 'Battle Royale', and 'Battle Royale 2'. All fucking insane, well thought out films.

The Highlander has got to be one of my favorites. It has the best badguy in any adventure/fantasy movie, the Kurgan. He cuts off heads and rapes with reckless abandon! . The movie has Sean Connery too!!

Hills Have Eyes(remake) which was ok, though it was made by the same bods as Switchblade Romance.
Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, bloody ace in a dark, er funny, er sick way!
Pulse, it'll put you off the internet...maybe?
Abnormal Beauty, just a little screwed up but I'm guessing that Eli Roth chap got a set idea from this for Hostel!
R-Point, even soldiers ain't safe from ghouls!
Also watched Hertoic Trio and Musa.

I watched "Old Boy" the other day, perhaps the first South Korean film I've watched. It was really well done.
They look like they're Japanese! LOL.

Actually the Japanese look like they're Korean. I am not looking forward to the Oldboy remake.
Finally saw, on that note, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance.
On a different note, finally saw Brewster McCloud.

fuck man, sonny chiba looks like a mexican
thats what makes his movies great.
i just saw shogun ninja, another chiba film, this one sucked tho. chiba got killed off halfway thru.
there was this weird homoerotic bruce lee look alike dude in the movie. 3/4th way thru the film goes into a "training for revenge" montage'. hard cheese funk music blaring
like if you combined the cociane sex era of disco, theatrically gay ballet and kung fu alla bruce lee. thats when this shit went off the deep end and i had to turn the movie off.
bad kung fu/samurai movies are something else, man. they will go into territory that most B movie couldnt possibly go. its unintentional too.
i got 5 more chiba movies to go, 3 from the street fighter series, another from the ninja series and another samurai one which just arrived mysteriously.
psyched

They will do a remake in the USA?this will suck
Saw Tokyo Drift last night,it was so fucking lame(more like a sci-fi movie)!
Also saw Initial D which was good, but in comparison to
Tokyo Drift it's a masterpiece.

i dont know the movie you guys are talking about
but i cant tell the difference between koreans, chinese and japanese by looking at the faces, its like telling the difference between french and german peoples.
but i sure as shit can tell by the clothes they wear, japanese people dress nice usually, some are fashion obsessed, they got style.
chinese and koreans seem to dig salvation army clothes, seem to always have.
japanese movies, outside of historical films everyones sporting designer clothes, american or european thrift, they got genres of fashion that are entirely thier own.
chinese films, on the other hand, everyones is in cheaps suits straight out of the 70s. dudes tucking in thier nerdy button up plain white shirts in non-descript dickies type work pants. the chicks dress like men but maybe a skirt.
im not an expert or anything but thats my overall impression. maybe more modern movies are different since korea and china are into a huge rise on the quality of film, quality of daily living and so forth
i gotta see more korean films tho. i got a korean rip off of godzilla somewhere, man its horrible, forget the name

well most of the drift scenes would not happen in the
real world + someone who is clueless about driving in general
can't learn how to drift in week(and be the best at it) + 10 people
can't make a super car in less than a day!And many more I can't remember.
Only cool scene was the ending with Diesel

Just saw Kagemusha. I didn't like it as much as Kurosawa's previous work, but it was quite enjoyable nonetheless.

Has anyone seen "A History of Violence"? I thought it was a really interesting movie except for the ending that tied nothing together.
