I've been watching all 6 star wars movies over the part 2 days. Just now watching "Return of the Jedi." I know it's almost 4 in the morning and I've gotta be in school at 7,and I've only had like 5 hours of sleep, but... it's Star Wars, man.

The last couple of films I watched were Citizen Kane and Chopper. Both were excellent.

chopper is good, real intense. that actor is good at portraying a psychotic. ive encountered agro, ready to throw down over nothing, ex-cons on the bus that arent even as intense as that guys acting.
the whole australian toecutter phenomenon is interesting.

Bana is pretty good, yeah.
Citizen Kane is actually better than Chopper, even though it has no scenes shot on reversal.

I recently aquired a taste for medieval / ancient war and mythological type movies. Havent seen much though, only shit like Hannibal (Rome's greatest nightmare) and Trzy Ogniem I Mieczem (polish film) Trzy Og... Was fucking amazing. Damn great 3 hours of raw war yet great storytelling. Doesn't get much better than tat.
I wish I had more time to watch more.

See Andrei Rublev if you haven't. There's some medieval war in there.

Don't get Andrei Rublev if you want expansive action sequences. It's definitely worth a watch though, one of my favourite films.
Try Eistentein's Alexander Nevsky.

Yeah, see Alexander Nevsky. A lot of the war scenes in Andrei Rublev seem to be from there anywhere. But do see Andrei Rublev. See everything from those two Russians.

Are they English-speaking with availability in the local Hollywood Video?

Hmm...Eisentein's and Tarkovsky's films dubbed in English? Highly doubt it. But you obviously get subtitles in the international versions.
Assuming that Hollywood video is a rental shop, then I bet you'd be hard pressed to find their films in one of it's chains.

I am watching Wolf Creek. A movie about Australians that get captured, tortured, killed and whatnot. Anyone else ever seen it? I can't decide whether I like it or not...

Any Eisenstein or Tarkovsky film that's been released on the Criterion Collection (Alexander Nevsky, both parts of Ivan the Terrible, Andrei Rublev, and Solaris) will probably be at a Hollywood Video, since they tend to have a Criterion section. They won't be dubbed into English and you'll have to be able to read to understand the dialogue. But if you can interact on the internet you can probably read.

my roomate was watching Stalker and my friend came over and was translating some dialogue and explained some of the subtitles are way off to the literal meanings, it had to do with making it more convenient for the text or stuff was changed do to nuance of meaning, word connotation. i always dont like the idea with most of the subtitled movies you're getting the dumbed down edited versions of whats said.
but then again the russians do talk alot, in this case i dont mind, but like other foriegn films i kinda hope they were more precise.

A well subtitled movie doesn't lose very much, and the Criterion Tarkovskies tend to be better subtitled than the non-Criterion ones (which is a shame, as my favorite Tarkovskies are Stalker, Mirror, and Nostalghia).
But it's true that a lot of subtitled movies necessarily lose a lot of their sense. It's better than dubbed, though, where the meaning is further mangled to most closely approximate the motion of the actors' mouths. And it's more practical than learning every language in which good movies are made.

Yes, but now I'll probably be underwater when it comes out, god damn it.
Anyone else here think that Hostel was actually pretty fuckin tame for the hype it got? None of the scenes were gut wrenchers even to the extent of some of the ones in the Saw movies. It's not a bad movie, but not scary.

Seriously?
Hostel was way more gutwrenching to me than Saw. Hostel had basically no plot behind it though. When I saw Hostel, almost everyone left the theater. During Saw, I don't remember anyone leaving.

Well I wouldn't even say Saw was gut wrenching to me. But in 1 when the dude cut his leg off and in 2 when the chick got thrown in the pit, those two parts made me cringe a little when I first watched them, but nothing in Hostel came close to doing that, except maybe the Achilles Tendon parts...
The eye part in Hostel was fucking HILARIOUS though, I'm glad I bought this. It came with a free movie called Hunting Humans or something, which was actually better than Hostel...

None of the three (saw 1, 2, or hostel) were as good or half as scary as i had hoped/expected, but considering how much i watch horror movies, i'm not too surprised that they don't affect me at all anymore.

Yeah, I know what you mean.
Saw 2 was better then 1 in my opinion, I always love a good exit wound. I did cringe when the girl was thrown in the pit of needles, and the other girl's hands were stuck in the glass box.

Glass box did nothin for me. I was hoping Blackie would've grabbed her and yanked her down, severing her hands, but no........
Yes, I liked 2 better as well, and that main character chick is friggin hot. Something about a chick being covered in blood and screaming and crying just brings the little yeti out of hibernation.

Well the only reason it did that for me (the first time I saw it) was 'cause I was expecting her hands to be severed. (I was dissapointed, yet again)

And it was kinda fucked up how the shit they were breathing kicked the fucking crap out of that one girl really fast, while the rest of them weren't nearly as bad.
So what was your favorite part of those movies?

I don't know, honestly. I liked the movies as a whole. Watching the guy cut his skin off was fucking hilarious.

I'm kinda surprised out of all three of these movies, they didn't use the one thing almost guaranteed to make anyone cringe. Genital torture.
Seriously. Watching a guy burn alive in an oven. No big deal. Cut your own leg off. Not bad, but no big deal. Feeding a guy dickfirst into a giant salad shooter? FANTASTIC

Killer Condom is more or less what the title promises: something that should be pleasurable but really tears your dick off. By which I mean that it's got very little cheesy fun appeal, despite the title.

I've been wanting to see that for a while now, from when I first saw it in a store a few years ago. I should have bought the damn thing.

I watched The Machinist last night. I found it to be a truly excellent film coupled with a magnificent performance from Christian Bale. Go get it!

I just got back from seeing Silent Hill. I really enjoyed it. Any fan of the games will definitely love it, and even if never played the games, you'll still probably love it. In depth storyline, gore, suspense, and one of the coolest kill scenes I've ever seen. Definitely go see it.

They kind of put Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 together, in terms of places they visit in the town/monsters they fight, but they used the storyline from the first game, which is a girl is having nightmares about some place called Silent Hill, and the mother trying to solve the problem takes her there to confront the issues. Its something like Wizard Of Oz with a lot of Satan.
A good dose of violence too.

i think you have the right movie in mind, but there is no kelly brook in The hole. did you mean that name or another one? The hole has Thora Birch and Kiera Knightly. anyway, one person hates a movie, and another loves the same movie. i rarely dont like a movie that i choose to watch.

Kiera Knightly, that's the one. I really disliked that movie.
Hmm...no new film really appeals to me. I plan to re-watch Stalker, Andrei Rublev, and Wild Strawberries then.

EDIT: hes a pretty cool actor. though after seeing A walk on the moon, he really does strike me as a hippie when hes got his blonde hair sort of grown out.

I went to see silent hill last night. I heard some bad things about it, but damn! Best video game movie yet I reckon. Most disturbing horror film I have seen yet. The plots a bit of a mindfuck but you can understand it if you think...same with the ending.
It was fucked up though, the way it brought the suspense to a climax, then air raid sirens, bass drop then black out to silence... that was when you knew something majorly fucked up was gonna happen. Awesome. I was just sitting there when the sirens started thinking oh shit, what next.

Yeah, in my opinion you have to have played the games, and mulled THOSE over, to understand the movie. It takes getting accustomed to Silent Hill's assbackwards logic to get the movie.
The cinematography was excellent. The person I saw it with remarked that there was no plot, so on the way home I had to do a lot of explaining. It has as much plot as any other movie being put out there, but its executed through a filter of reality gone absolutely apeshit, just like the videogames.

i liked silent hill. i think they did kind of a bad job of transfering the plot to the movie especially the intro and set up. i played the first two games from that series and i agree john holland that if u played the games it makes much more sense. and i m glad they uses monsters from the second game cuz pyramid head is pretty cool and they did do a really good job with the visuals.

I actually havent played any of the games yet. I stayed away from them as a kid as I knew theyd be too scary for me. From the looks of the film I was right. Im gonna pick up SH2 as soon as I can. But this is all stuff for another thread.
I am considering going back to watch it again in a week. I loved it. I got the cam rip downloaded today, but its pretty shitty quality so yeeeeea.
