I watched "Beowulf And Grendel" last night in threatres...this movie got a 8.4/10 on IMDB....Id give this film a very generous 4/10..however I voted 1/10 on the site..it was terrible.
I bascially wanted to see it because there are a few trolls(who are just very tall people) and vikings(who are from America and Ireland)..the scenery was pleasant as it was filmed as it was entirely shot in Iceland.
I beleive this is not out in the US, just select threatres in Canada...there is another "Beowulf" to come out this year...wait for that folks..this one isn't even worth downloading.

Beowulf with Christopher Lambert was the best. LOL

Crispin Glover(George McFly from Back to The Future) is Grendel! WTF! I guess he's completely nuts these days..he filmed a movie consisting entirely of down syndromed people.
And he changed his middle named to "Hellion."

Last night I finally watched Troy even though it was released a long time ago. Damn that film was full of action and mythology. i think that it was exagerrated a little when little brad pitt fuckin dodges 3 spears and then jumps and kills a 2+meter muscle man

There's no mythology in Troy, just standard fare 'historical epic' action. Since there's virtually no proof any of these people ever existed or that a major war was actually fought at the site at which we believe Troy stood, it's safe to say it's all 'a little exaggerated.' It's a movie; its job is not to be either accurate or realistic. Its job is to be good, which is unfortunate in its case.
A Zemeckis-directed Beowulf will do one thing: suck. A lot. He might be able to hide that it sucked from you, but deep down you'll feel it and lose a piece of your soul for having enjoyed it because it was big and had Beowulf in it.

sure there is, there are layers upon layers (upwards of seven) cities where troy is thought to have been (turkey)
dont let the lies of one german archaeologist make you think that everything surrounding troy is bs

I'm aware there's a tell in that location. But the layer that corresponds to the time the Trojan War was supposed to have happened is laughably small, and there is no archaeological record of a war having occurred. So I'll repeat:

That movie should have involved the story where they stopped at that island on they way home and turned into pigs. That would have been fun, when they all turned into pigs and the movie ended.
On another note, I watched "The Island" last night and enjoyed that.
They had a particuarly nice noise when the train wheel things hit the road too.

there is like 10 troys as far as national geographic is concerned, the story is written like 600 years after the fact that this event took place. this isnt the bible we are talking here,it isnt a literal religious document. the only thing it has in common with the bible is it was the most common text the more wealthy people learned how to read by.
it was probably based on many oral histories of many wars that occurred in the anatolia. think of it like a compilation. and also keyword: national epic
the most horrendous blooper in that movie was all overhead shots of troy, the entire city was unpainted

This is enough talk about Troy. I dig in the Middle East and go to an Iliad-obsessed school. I'm not going to learn anything and I am going to get annoyed. So back to movies.
Writing on The Lady From Shanghai right now. That, my friends, is a fantastic movie.

Does not come with my recommendation. Some powerful acting and emotional cheap-shots, but generally kind of a mess. Which is not to say that Depp is anything less than great in it. Just that it's not set up so that's all it needs.

I found Blow to be rather boring. I tend to be a big fan of drug movies, but this one just didn't do it for me. My favorite drug movie, and one of my favorite movies overall, is Spun.

Yes, one of the only movies to feature a Coppola and be directed by a former black metal musician. I haven't seen the uncut version; thumbs up?
Blow honestly isn't so much a drug movie so much as a drug-connection movie. As in, people in drug cultures tend to make temporary minor conspiracies over the drugs, and that's the movie, mostly because of the way Depp interacts with his co-stars. It certainly isn't a drug movie in the sense that the style in any way coincides with the experience of drug use.

2 thumbs up for the uncut version. I can't seem to remember exactly what seens they cut out in the edited version, since I've only seen it once and a very long time ago. Do you know if they edit the animated scene in the strip club, where we go on a "trip" into the cunt of the stripper? I would think it's edited in some way, and that being one of the best scenes in the movie, I highly suggest making an effort to seeing the uncut version.
Oh, and when i use the phrase "drug movie", i'm just referring to a movie where drugs play a major role in the plot.

They basically black bar the entire screen for that little animation. Nudity is inconsistently covered and lines are inconsistently bleeped out. It's really weird.
I understood what you meant by a 'drug movie.' I was just pointing out that it failed to be a 'drug movie' at all, despite drugs featuring in the plot, due to a fairly weak director. Demme didn't understand what a drug movie needed.

What the fuck did I just say about writing about it? I said I already knew all this, that there's no evidence of any of it, and to shut the fuck up. Either talk about a movie or get out of my goddamn thread. Don't make stupid 'factual' statements we all already know about in that mewl-mouthed 'surprise' fashion.

I just saw Corpse Bride and Doom.
....Both amazingly predictable. But I must say, CB isn't that bad. I didn't get into it at first, but after a while it started to get better.
Doom.....I just about said outloud what was going to happen next and was right 90% of the time.
ex1. In all the movies I've seen, the rock is the bad guy.
ex2. As soon as I heard that that one guy was the brother of the blonde chick, I knew right then that he would be the last man standing.
Hoever, I did not at all expect the first person shooter shit to pop up. That amused me, and I laughed out loud.

Duke rules. Although a moive about him would be so terrible it'd rock. It might actually be decent if everyone involved didn't take it seriously. Bill Murry should play the part and Vin Diesel should be one of the babes.
Speaking of Bill. I love Lost in Translation!

then perhaps they should have changed the story around. i like some degree of resolution
plus he would have been arrested so quickly, probably long before he even got back to have his nice family dinner

Movies with resolution are absolutely dishonest. Robert Altman said it best: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith get married, they have problems, they get back together and they live happily ever after. End of the movie. Two weeks later, he kills her, grinds her body up, feeds it to his girlfriend who dies of ptomaine poisoning, and her husband is prosecuted and sent to the electric chair for it--but here's our own little story with the happy ending. What is an ending? There's no such thing. Death is the only ending." Story resolution is bullshit. The film's about idenity, and hidden secrets not whether or not the Stalls go on together or he gets caught or whatever the fuck might happen if they gave you your resolution. A History of Violence would be a shitty movie with that kind of resolution, especially if they changed it around to set that up. It'd be a normal action movie. What bullshit.
And you're willing to believe that unarmed Viggo Mortenson could continue to kill armed mobsters with laughably bad aim and the reaction time of coma victims, but not that he could drive home without getting arrested? Interesting call. Again, it doesn't matter. The things that happen in the movie don't matter except in how they're treated thematically, so worrying about plot elements just tells me you didn't really go in with the right mindset. Which isn't your fault at all, so try not to take it that way.
If you really dislike a lack of resolution, I withdraw my recommendation for Cache. It's the king-fuck this year of unresolved plot. Though, again, if you're on board, you won't give a damn about what's left up in the air.

Not the husband's? It's hard to pull off a role like that, especially since the slippage between the two identities is also one between two styles of acting; realistic when he's Tom, cartoonish when he's Joey. And, which is just good direction, everything is set up to make this work.
It was all plausible according to the logic set up within the diegetic world of the film, which is all you can ask of it. Actually, the cops not coming immediately to a shooting on a rich piece of property set way off from the street in a neighborhood as spread out as that one isn't particularly implausible. I actually have a more serious problem in plausibility based on the fact that Tom/Joey ordered a Genny Cream, which is a Rochester beer, in a bar in Philadelphia, where any Philly boy would drink a Yuengling. But I let it slide.
Interesting note for the people who care: Maria Bello (the wife) in this is made up to look a lot like Jennifer Jason Leigh in another Cronenberg film, the incredible eXistenZ (which is cooler than the spelling would suggest). I can't really figure out why, as neither of them look particularly similar except in their respective Cronenberg films.

Alan Moore's decided to have his name removed from all film adaptations of his work. And no wonder. Some of the best comics ever written became some of the shittiest action fare ever to light up a dark room full of strangers.

Ahem, Duke is quite similar to a character in a movie titled something along the lines of "They Become".
At lest I thought so anyway.

I watched Hellraiser 8 (or 9?) This morning. Subtitle is Hellworld.
Suprisingly it didnt suck as much as I had expected it to having read the synopsis; which explained about a virtual reality world come real. Sounds shit, yea? But it really wasnt that bad.
A very nice twist in the end albeit a little predictable (but for hellraiser movies... yeah)
Check it out if you liked the original Hellraiser Trilogy. Not as good, but not as bad as say, Pinhead In Space.

What a great children's movie.
I'm going to watch the second today.

Yes, Gremlins 2> Gremlins...well, it most ways.
I enjoyed Hostel, neat concept...except too many breast shots.(Yes, I said it)
Shaun of the Dead is fucking great...as well as the orginal Dawn of the Dead, and I enjoyed the remake.
I watched Capote today(thank you Divx)..didn't really know it was about what it was..Is was a well made solid drama.

I still need to watch Hostel.

I haven't been able to find Cube. Wish I could though. These movies are cool, no matter how gay the plot is, just watching the people die is interesting.

cube is good, i got that at a best buy at reduced price, definately not what i expected.
i watched "triumph of the will" a while ago, im not a nazi or anything, its just a complete head trip of propaganda. with the commentary on the dvd a historian tells you alot of things about the person who made the movie and the fate of most of the heads of state featured, its totally scary to see how nazi germany was mobilized into a military state.

Cute. I've had 3,078 people tell me that it is after I tell them I'm going to be staying in Hostels while in Europe.
Cock Wrangler: "Where will you be sleeping?"
Dyldo: "Hostels"
CW: "Oh god, no! Haven't you seen Hostel?"
Dyldo: "No."
CW: "You really should see it, Dylan. It might change your mind."
Dyldo: "You're right, that sort of thing can only happen in hostels."
CW: "I know, its fawking scary!"

Cube is great. The sequels are pieces of shit.
Triumph of the Will is a monument to great editing. Really, really fascinating. Gets bogged down by dumb party rhetoric, though, and a sense of the beautiful in keeping with nazi philistines. Still, everybody should see some nazi propaganda before they die, and it's one of the best-made examples.
Got to see one of the best prints still around of the restored Touch of Evil. For those of you who don't know, that really, really rules. I also just saw Dave Chappelle's Block Party, which is one of the better concert movies I've seen in a while. I'm not sure why, since I wasn't into most of the music, but I suspect it has to do with Michel Gondry.

I just saw Ed Wood for the first time. Liked it alot.
Anyone know if Thank You For Smoking is worth seeing?
I've looked around and can't find any information on the specifics of Hostel and its backround. Richard?

I can't care enough about Hostel to know anything about it. There's probably some instance of somebody paying money to torture somebody else somewhere at some point in time and the person who wrote the news story sold the rights to Eli Roth, who turned it into an unimaginative horror film of the pointless violence variety that realizes it has no actual horror (horror's dependant on an everyday set-up) and hopes that 'based on a true story' will make up for its faults. And it probably does, since we don't ask much of horror anymore.
Thank You for Smoking is probably worth seeing. Not necessarily in theaters. Hard to say when it's not out yet and could be either genuinely entertaining or a bunch of BIG TOBACCO IS BAD crap dressed up in a modicum of wit.

Hey PST, I remember you talking about the Cube movies before. I've seen Cube and CubeZero, but I think there's another one. Anyway, do they ever give an explanation as to what the purpose of it all is or anything like that?

Cube 2: Hypercube tried this in one of the dumbest sequels ever made. They tried to get into some of the math behind it and got it all wrong, as virtually every movie that includes math in some way does, and put in a lot of nonsense about a weapons firm being the origin of the cube. They introduce you to the person who invented it as a test subject for the cube, which is dumb beyond dumb. It's basically best not to watch it.

Man that's crap. It's an awesome concept, but it pisses me off that they couldn't seem to come with a complete package as far as explaining it. I know that was the aim of the first one, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to make three and not have much of any plot at all.

about the cube movie, i searched imdb and couldnt find sequels listed. were these sequels handed off to some other director?.
what made the original cube movie great was that you never found out about the origins of the cube. you just viewed what the test subjects experienced, learned about as much as they can speculate about it. it was brilliantly minimalist in that respect. what was more important was the characters utilizing thier know how and cooperating in getting out. its more about human nature than science fiction.

The ending to that was fucked up (Hellraiser)
but the film, apart from the ending, blew hard in my opinion, and thats saying alot. I liked Hellraiser- Hellworld though. Its very good, for a hellraiser sequel, post III. Very good twist. Give it a shot if you havent already; it sounds like itll suck, but it doesnt, not as much as you think. Better than inferno, at least is what I thought.
I recently saw Fight Club and Predator 2. Both, kick ass movies, Fight Club was a little cooler the second time round imo and Predator 2 was cool as I was awake for it this time.

I saw Hostel and I gotta say it was pretty shitty. There were only 2 torture scenes, both less then 2 minutes and in the 2nd one the guy a) only gets two fingers cut off and b) escapes. They spent so much fucking time BUILDING UP! Creating suspence! Fuck! I don't come to Horror flicks about torturing people to see fine filmmaking! I come to see screaming and bleeding and barfing and limbs flying for hours on end!
On a lighter note, Saw is a good movie. More of a drama then a horror to be honest. I also highly recomend 28 days later. Fucking great movie.

Probably. You just have terrible taste in movies I'm assuming. I'm assuming you are unaware that it is a remake of the 1933 classic, and in that aspect Peter Jackson did a great job. Now shutup.

On a lighter note, Saw is a good movie. More of a drama then a horror to be honest. I also highly recomend 28 days later. Fucking great movie.

I still want to see Hostel.
And yes, Saw is a sweet movie. After a second watch, Saw 2's better IMO

Just watched Taxi Driver for the first time, a great film. I have a soft spot for films set in grittier, sleazier versions of large American cities usually portrayed as being glamourous and the like...especially if there's some dinner jazz playing in the background. Makes me want to sit in some back-alley neon lit jazz club, with an ashtray filled to the brim with cigaretes. Anyway...great film!

Yes, I downloaded it...the quality was complete shit, and it was still worth watching...it was written and directed by James Gunn, director of the new Dawn of the Dead, as well as an old member of the Troma Team.(Class of Nuke 'em High, The Toxic Avenger, ect)
It had several hilarious one liners, and was well done throughout.
I also recommend Dead and Breakfast...another great comedy/horror.
