Mel Gibson's only good in Lethal Weapon. The Lethal Weapon series I have on box set, and I watch it a lot.
The Passion was funny, so I liked it. But he portrayed Satan, unless I'm mistaken, as a fucking bald woman......what the hell was that??

Mel's been good as an actor several times. As a director almost never. Most actors make piss-poor directors, though.
Seriously, go out and see The New World. It's only in a few theaters now and is probably going to be taken out soon, because it's not making much money. It rules more than your collective mothers.

like ive said before, i like most movies i see, but i saw Boogeyman a few days ago and that FUCKIN SUCKED. the "boogeyman" looked so stupid, and not the least bit scary or disturbing. however, i also watched Saw (1) yesterday for the first time and i was pretty impressed. i just need to see part 2 now. Saw rocked, IMO.

Yeah, but, in those films they were surrounded by men....and besides, Demi Moore would probably be fuckable even if she was a leper.

No, it dosen't. The Saws are pretty bland and cheesy with only a few select moments of memorable things. The acting is horrific, too, which gore can't always make up for (and there isn't even that much gore). Although it was awesome watching the chick from 7th Heaven die.

You're going to think they're attractive regardless of their appearance, because of the amount of men in each film.

....There are other movies that have them where they aren't surrended by men.

But in those movies they aren't bald. That's the catch-22 of the woman with a shaved head. Incidentally, Cate Blanchette did well with a shaved head, and Natalie Portman is on deck.
Dylan is totally right about Saw. Why is it a horror movie can't be a sensation these days without sucking balls? Is there some rule?

Its sad. I can't even think of the last good Horror movie I've seen in theaters. Haha, in fact I don't recall ever have seeing one.
You'd think that since horror movies are the big thing right now that a director, a good and clever one, would come along and put an end to it all by making something for others to live up to which would mabye act as a catalyst for a good few movies. Guess not.

If that ever happened, those that followed would be no different from the cack that is being churned out now, just with another, 'different', spin/twist.
Horror movies should be dead and buried, in my opinion anyway.

horror doesnt work with this cgi digital stuff man, it was back in the day with grainy resolution, horrible cinematography in respect to lighting and darkness and what would be a minimalist ingenuity with bad costumes and drawn out suspense and seriously talented ways to simulate brutallity with fake blood, wounds, decapitations and such. like if you watch a vhs tape of the chainsaw massacre thats kind of old, the almost super 8 resolution is gonna intensify the violence coz you cant see so clearly, makes it look kinda more real. with this pixellated hi-resolution shit you can tell off the bat whats computer graphic, whats a dumb prop and so on
what someone needs to do is make a movie that looks old like those faded reels but add the digital effects in subtle ways, that may work

I don't think I posted in here yet, movies...
Snatch
Lock / stock and two smokin' barrels
A clockwork orange
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Natural born killers
Fight Club
Boondock saints
Memento
The Shawshank Redemption
Godfather trilogy
Scarface (duh)
Seven
Boys 'n da hood!
Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood
Donnie Darko (I know... everybody lists this one.)
Rounders
Requiem For A Dream
And the scariest movie ever.... Event Horizon. That movie is the only movie that still scares the shit out of me.
That's all I can come up with right now, I've seen pretty much everything, a friend of mine works at a store where they sell DVD's. The guy has his own collection too (like shiiiitloads of DVD's) ofcourse I borrow some every now and then and watch it at my parents place (big-ass screen and home cinema, hell yeah!)
I hardly go to the movies, I'de rather chill the fuck out at home with my girl on the couch. Ofcourse the ice cold beers are in 'stretch-u'r-arm'-distance.
Latests movies I've seen where Jarhead, Sin City and City of God (cidade de deus). the last one was pretty impressive. Jarhead was allright but I didn't really impress me. It's no Full Metal Jacket or Platoon... it isn't meant to be like that either but it's still a good movie to see. Not legendary but just good.
Sin City was a bit of a dissapointment for me, the idea is allright and it's a pretty brutal movie but I expected more of a storyline.

Speaking of horror, John Carpenter's The Thing is one of my favourite horrors of all time. I love the ending!

Right, mabye I said that wrong. I'd hope that it would act as inspiration..or something. Even though it wouldn't, never does, ever will. etc. Wishful thinking.

Just caught A History of Violence for the third time at the student cinema. Goddamn, that movie rules. Anybody else see it?
The only drawback this time through: I had the unfortunate luck to sit by old black women. This also happened at The New World. They're not the only people to act in a movie theater as though it were their living room at home, but they seem to be the most persistent and oblivious. Drives me nuts.

Movies where the storyline sucks, well, suck. I'll have to see if to give my opinion on it.. but I'm telling you now, if the storyline did suck, I won't like it. Cause I've seen my share of movie/photographed gore.

So yea I watched Last Days last night and I must say it was the most boring piece of garbage ever. I don't know if I'm just not 'artsy' enough but it was fuckin' slow. The whole movie I was waiting for something to happen...needless to say nothing really does. Has anyone else seen it? If so what did you think of it?

Doesn't the main character get his head blown off with a shotgun by his best friend at the end? That's something, no? I haven't seen it, but I don't know what you were expecting, given Van Sant's last two movies.

I was referring to Last Days, hence the mention of a shotgun, a head, and Gus Van Sant's recent movies, and the total lack of reference to an eye or any kind of torture in an Eli Roth flick. Aside from the fact that I wasn't perfectly precise I don't see what could have given you the impression I was talking about the eyeball scene.

I just watched Gangs of New York and really enjoyed it. Leonardo DiCaprio can kind of pull of his role, but the other main character (forgot who plays him) absolutely shines. A female supporting role was pointless in this film though.

I couldn't stop laughing at Daniel Day Lewis's accent. I thought the film was OK but nothing more than that.

That's funny, Daniel Day Lewis spent his off time on the set laughing at scouser accents. Weird how the world is.
I liked Gangs of New York because it was Scorsese trying something different. And he didn't quite pull it off, probably because of Harvey PhiliWeinstein, the cunt. But also because it's the first time Scorsese tried something new since like 1968. It paid off in The Aviator and should even more in The Departed, where he'll have Nicholson to work with. That should rule.

I'm more qualified to talk about older Kurosawa. I only dimly remember Dreams and I don't think I have access to a copy here.

kurosawa** then. man, i only dimly remember it too and maybe thats best. but i think im going to track down a dvd, hopefully one with specials on it. the fox wedding was really stunning visually..and the one with the people out in the ice. also the nuclear holocaust one...and something about a soldier walking down a foggy tunnel. yeah i need a refresher course
in other news clerks 2 footage has been released fairly recently and it looks like its going to be pretty bad. i love clerks , in fact its my favorite comedy of all time. but this im afriad wont match up

I liked the Clerks 2 trailer that has no dialogue and Among the Living playing, but mostly because I really like Anthrax.
I remember the Van Gogh sunflowers and the old man with the water wheel at the end best.

Yea I'm not gonna lie here I'm not the biggest movie buff so I didn't have any clue what to expect when I went into watching this movie and pretty much my one friend said it was good...It wasn't. It was a waste of time and then the main character blows his head off in the end.

that kabuki movie looked like it sucked, toxic avenger is a classic"new jerseys first superhero!" i havent seen the first one since i was a kid. surf nazis must die is the most low-budget, most horrendous bad acting, worst plot, worst everything movie ever created, its up there with "plan 9 from outer space" or "game of death"

Bergman: Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, Autumn Sonata, maybe some others.
Kurosawa: Rashomon, Stray Dog, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, High and Low, Throne of Blood, Ran, Dersu Uzala and Ikiru. The Hidden Fortress and Dersue Uzala contributed a lot to the original Star Wars trilogy, if you're interested.

I don't think you can go wrong with any Kurosawa Shakespeare, Ran being his better - Kagemusha is his best. Also, Tengoku to jigoku (High and Low/The Ransom) is one of his (or mine) top three Kurosawa films, but don't expect any samurai - just an amazing story filmed by a master.

Kagemusha? It's what he says it is: a dress rehearsal for Ran, beautiful but empty. Good call, though; should've mentioned it.

Am I the only person that's seen "Gummo" or "Ken Park" ?
I'd love to discuss them as they are indeed mindblowing.
Ken Park has got to be one of the dirtiest and most shocking films I've ever seen. And the shocker is...it has a few mainstream actors.

No way in hell you're the only one on a metal board who's seen Gummo. Just take a gander at Darko's occupation, or interests, or whatever it is. Ken Park I haven't had access to, and I'm not sure whether or not that's a good thing. Korine's pretty interesting, but I really don't like Larry Clark.

an interesting thing i heard about the tarkovsky movie "stalker"based on the book "road side picnic". after the chernobyl disaster, people would sneak into the restricted zone around it and collect stuff of value, this was highly illegal and these people where known as "stalkers" and used slang from the book and movie

Yeah, they even called the area around Chernobyl 'the zone.' But I think if you go there you just get radiation poisoning, not one of the best films of all time. Apparently the book is inspired by an earlier, covered up Chernobyl-like incident and the behavior surrounding it. Still, and I want to be clear in going on the record about this: Stalker is better than Chernobyl.
Ken Park is supposed to feature the following (this from memory from a few years ago), all explicitly shown, in detail: oral sex, sex, masturbation, urination, incest, a threesome, a suicide, the murder of an old couple, and maybe some other stuff. More Larry Clark photographing naked teenagers, oddly always trying to point out how empty and bankrupt the kind of life they live is, but buys into these values in his presentation. Apparently based on some stories he made up or that are from his own childhood, but worked into something more interesting by the more interesting Korine. I'm interested in it because of the risks taken, but I prefer it when a commitment to doing whatever it takes comes after the art and isn't substituted for it.

Oh, I forgot, if you liked Seven Samurai, then try your hardest to find Hideo Gosha's "Three Outlaw Samurai", then ending is simply sublime, (especially for a directorial debut).

Just saw Requiem for a Dream. Not too bad, not really that good either. Is it supposed to be some kind of film masterpiece?

I just saw Hitchcock's "The Birds" and I thought it was good. Psycho is next on my list.

People regard Requiem for a Dream so highly because it's so striking, and also because it's a fairly good example of the integration of style and content (though only because Aronofsky, who doesn't seem capable of bending his style to the film, chose a more appropriate type of hallucination than abstract mathematics, which apparently bears no resemblance whatsoever to his Pi). However, it's mostly because it's so recent, and highly ranked by people who don't really have much of a grounding in film. Which isn't to say it's not a damn good movie, but we like what's current and have no idea that it's going to fade. And it is; there are better drug movies, better, less pound-you-in-the-face movies about frustrated dreams, more interesting and visceral editing (from 80 years ago), and so on. It's not great, but it's the best thing Aronofsky's going to do unless he learns how to change. But, like I said, it is good.
The Birds rules. Totally surreal.

The leading female in The Birds had a nervous breakdown during the filming. (Forgot her name..Tippi something...)
I have to say the Hitchcock's pyschological approach to horror is much better than gore films. Shock and horror aren't the same thing, and it is nice to see a director who understands that.

I don't think of The Birds as horror; horror usually works best with real people in the real world coming face to face with something horrifying. The more quotidian the set-up the better the pay-off. I think of it as a terror film; nobody acts the least bit rationally or how they would in real life, and nothing really adds up or gets resolved. It gets at you at a much more primal level than horror can, since it's just sheer, irrational fear that never gets resolved, explained, or dealt with in any satisfactory way, and so is left open at the end of the film. Brilliant, if you ask me. And yeah, it is much better than most slashers.
Psycho is also very good. Slashers essentially come from it, but most learn the wrong lessons. It's a funny one, though, since it's, probably rightly, assumed that Hitchcock didn't want to make the second 'half' of the film, but knew he had to because he'd never get it released if he just ended with the shot of the car sinking into the marsh. As a result, he made it have about a half dozen different 'endings,' each one contradicting or undercutting each other, but each so effective that it doesn't really matter to any of us. Just like nobody really makes a big deal about how all the characters in The Birds act absolutely nothing like realistic characters; he really knew what he was doing at this point. If you're liking this strand of Hitchcock, try Vertigo and Frenzy. Not really horror, but great and in the same strand, I think. Maybe not.

I wasn't refering to The Birds as horror, that comment was directed at Psycho. I'll be sure to check out Vertigo and Frenzy. Any other movies in the same vein as Psycho? The only one that comes to mind is Silence of the Lambs.

You mean effective films about serial killers? Or how do you mean 'in the same vein'?

Lost Highway is the first thing to come to mind for me, partially because it's entirely psychological and partially because it's what I consider one of the scariest things ever put on film. Somewhat different (not about a serial killer, for one thing), but try it on for size.
Aside from that, Manhunter and Se7en may be of interest. Repulsion as well; in fact, any Polanski film labeled 'horror' will be worth your while, at least that I've seen. Lost Souls is fairly different, but very visceral, as done by a Polish cinematographer whose interest in purely visual horror. Paul Schrader's Cat People may be up your alley, though in some ways it's over the top. When Cronenberg does horror, while he tends to use a lot of grotesque violence and so on, he's right on the mark and often interesting psychologically, especially in the ways conspiracies breed conspiracies which grow out of control and his style tends to get crazier as the characters and content do. Very cool stuff, to me. De Palma's horror usually does well by me, though sometimes it's dumb, which is made worse when he for some reason refuses to use an interesting eye. Carrie is one of the times it's not dumb, and the eye is interesting. I think at least some of those should be what you're looking for.

I watched Napoleon Dynamite last night. Laugh out loud funny in parts and on the whole a great movie I think. It falls into the Hollywood trap of the underdog winning and getting the girl, though, but aside from that it's good stuff
I think one of the best films that mixed both the psychological and gore aspects of horror was John Carpenter's The Thing. When you watch it for the first time, it's impossible not to feel unsettled by not knowing which of the researchers are infected. The scene where each of the characters' blood is tested is particularly shit-in-pants inducing - you know it's coming, but when and who! The sense of claustrophobia is immense and rivals that of the Alien films in the sweaty palm stakes. One of my all time favourite horrors.

Yes, that is a fantastic movie. I purchased Crash not too long ago, not only about racism I beleive, but how people preconceive false judgements...everyone does it.
