Movies
I like movies. If you're in here, you probably do too. We didn't have a thread dedicated to talking about movies, so now we do. Discuss, gush, recommend, whatever; I'll do the same. I personally watch just about everything and wouldn't mind discussing just about any kind of film, so somebody else get the ball rolling.

Will blow your mind. To this day...I am still blown away by the pure insanity and realism.
Eraserhead
a trip on acid without doing acid. But not recomended for those with short attention span.
Most Clint Eastwood films....I enjoy too.
[edit] I am also a huge sci-fi fan....Alien series is my fav.
I HATE "chick flicks"

Hostile fucking sucked.
I had high hopes for this. It takes about an hour for anything to really happen. The gore parts sucked for the most part and there was hardly enough for it to be called a gorefest. Takashi Miike has a cameo.

well you know my like for ingmar bergman movies. my parents just rented saraband but im not sure that ill watch it before i watch the predecessor...word has it that its massively different from his other work anyways
my favorite movie in terms of dialogue is hands down clerks. the opening 30 mintues of that film is a dry humour tour de force
my favorite action movies- none really, i dont dig action at all
favorit drama .... i dont even know. come to think of it , for the most part movies in my mind are a waste of time so i never watch them

Speaking of Bergman, I recently watched The Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries. The guy's an amazing director, and I can't wait to view more of his work.
Does anyone else like Tarkovsky's work? I've only seen Andrei Rublev though, so what else could be recommended?

Comedies - Wedding crashers, Deuce Biggalow:European Gigalo, airplane, anchorman, baseketball, team america
Others - Butterfly effect, Donnie Darko, Fight Club, October Sky.
I saw King Kong the other day too. I liked it a lot.
Has anybody seen the Machinist? I heard it was really fucked up, and i'm into those kind of movies. Somebody reccomend me some fucked up movies, movies that really make you think.

One movie I really liked was Memento.
And for comedys, definitly Kung Pow. Hilarious movie.
Overall, I'm not a movie person. I don't really enjoy watching most movies. So this will be my first and last post in this thread.

Half Baked, most of James Bond stuff, The Killer, Don't Be A Menace, most Jackie Chan, white guy / black cop movies, like that Blue Streak one (I don't care, I like them), and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.
ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT THE FLYING GUILLOTINE.

I know the best movies.
Donnie Darko [of course] - About time travel and shit and a 6ft tall bunny rabbit. Philosophical and shit, it rules.
The Dark Crystal - Awesome movie completely made of puppet actors its by Jim Henson [?] the guy behind Labyrinth, although TDC is a little more mature. And way cooler.
Labyrinth - Everyone knows this I think.
The Princess Mononoke - About humans versus the environment and Gaia in a bunch of Anime action and storytelling from the guy behind Spirited away and some other ones.
Dark City - About a guy who find he has telekenetic powers and sets out to find out why he is the only one that realises the City never sees daylight...
Cube - Bunch of people mysteriously wake up in a cube. There are doors on every side... leading to another cube. Trick is some cubes are deadly, they gotta find their way out.
Evangelion will always be my favourite but thats a series not a movei [although there are 2 movies in the series... ]
OH YEAH I forgot to mention Bad Boy Bubby - This is one of the most fucked up films. Bubby is raised from a baby in an apartment room. He is like 34, he has never ever left the house. He is mentally disabled, well at least never had any education. This is a fucked up movie [and I mean fucked up] about incest, denial of God, and his adventures as Bubby kills his mother and breaks out into the streets. Some of the events are having sex with a Red Cross worker, joining a bnad and going to prison, but this movie is ALWAYS nitty gritty and watching it will make you feel dirty, I mean its explicit for no reason at all. But its good and has some messages in it.

Some of the best movies I've seen are Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas, Lock Stock, Snatch, all those classic mafia movies, Scarface, Shawshank Redemption, City Of God (Brazilian film), Memento, Donnie Darko and a couple of others I can't think of at the moment.

Everyone look to PST's sig, and you get a taste of the magnificant movie directed by CLint Eastwood--The Unforgiven. I just watched Blood Work last night--which is also a good movie directed and starting Clint.

Unforgiven is awesome.
One of the few mainstream films that actually made me feel something.
When the kid kills his first man.....the emotion is real and William Money stands there quietly....listening.
Kid: "I guess he had it coming"
William Money: "We all got it coming"
And Ned....When he fires and misses....you can almost see him ready to break down at the thought of having to go for it again.
One of the best films ever. IMO
Gene Hackman did a great job too.

my roomate is a huge tarkovsky fan, soviet era sci fi in general, so ive watched alot of the guys films, the stalker<i think thats the name>,solaris, rubliev, couple of others. the stuff is interesting and most of it is good, but i feel a little brow beaten by the vast amount of dialogue, not to imply corny special effects would help or maybe an obligatory laser gun fight, they couldnt afford that shit under communism, but man........russians talk alot, like talk a real lot.
ive been into the western/samurai movie phenomenon that happened in the 60's and seventies where kirosawa movies where made into westerns and vice versa, fist full of dollars, magnificent seven. there are a couple of others that i want to look into because i had only heard about this recently.
http://www.dieyouzombiebastards.com...iler_large.html
this movie was filmed locally in providence, i am an extra in the final scene, i play a green zombie. friends of mine are in it too, ive havent seen this movie yet and it was made 2 years ago

No shit...
And when he stands there about to die....he's got some balls!
"He's only got one barrel....when he fires....pull your pistols gentlemen and shoot him down like the dirty scoundrel he is"
click
"Misfire! Kill the son of a bitch!"
Moments later...
LittleBill: "I dont deserve to die like this...I was building a house"
William Money: "Deserves got nothing to do with it"
BAM!
I have two films on the PC downloaded from P2P

Well, someone asked for fucked up movies so I thought I might recommed a fairly good one I saw just a few days ago, "Eternal sunshine on the spotless mind".
Take the ability to erase particular memories from peoples' organic databases. Put it into the hands of a small, well-meaning corporation. Allow for the fact that fleeing from the bad memories are never a good solution. Put in Jimmie Carry...
All in all a quite interesting film.
Oh yea... Monty Python.

He is also staring in the "West Memphis Three" film.
His tall friend.......Harmony Korine (writer/director) saw him on a day time talk show about neglected kids.

I really really hope you meant the 1930's version.
Anyway, recommendations from someone who spent all his pay checks on mushrooms.
The Ugly - Best film to come out of New Zealand, until that Whale Rider thing last year. If you're into serial killer films with an actuall story and depth, oh and black blood, watch this.
Oldboy - Basic premis is a revenge film, with essentially no good guys. Has the best scene with a hammer you'll ever see.
Pieces of April - Yes, it has Tom Cruise's (literal)love child, but, if you have a doof and have nothing better to do except breathe, watch it.
The Killing Fields - If you've never watched this you have no right to recommend a film, or have a brain for that matter.
The Machinist - This was totally slated in the British press, (from what I read anyway), but it's another overlooked and underhyped, better than "we prefer explosions over acting" films that are vomitted out of holywood every single month...film.
A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon) - Another Asian masterpiece that is horribly overlooked, and yes, I've heard there is a remake coming. Two sisters with a secret, or so you think until the end. (Probably better than Dark Water, Ringu and The Eye - also thrown in for recommendations, not the holywood wank by the way)
Save the Green Planet (Jigureul jikyeora!) - More asian master class lessons. I first saw this at a party, I was very stonned, the telling thing is, I enjoyed it when I wasn't too. It's about a guy who can basically be described as mental, who thinks aliens are invading the planet....though, scf-fi fans stay away.

Solaris is good, much better than the recent Hollywood crap.
Stalker is another great one, but you should read the book first I suppose ("Roadside Picnic" by Strugatski brothers)
All his work on IMDB

Tarkovsky's one of my favorites. I don't think of his films as having a lot of dialogue, though. You know somebody's good when Bergman sees him and immediately says 'I wish I could do that.' My personal favorite's probably The Mirror, but it's almost impossible to go wrong with his filmography. You might want to see The Sacrifice, since he basically uses Bergman's actors, screenwriter, and crew there.
Oldboy is great if you like a good, brutal revenge film. Very few are more thorough.
I wouldn't recommend The Machinist. It seems like a late entry to the 'trauma as an excuse to play with the narrative' film drive, and compares poorly both to other films using similar devices, like Memento or the amazing Lost Highway, and to the director's earlier work (Session 9). On the other hand, the opening sequence is great. But Lynch does the same so much better, starting back in '78 with Eraserhead.
Miike guest-starred in Hostel? Did Eli Roth think that if he kept getting other directors to involve themselves in his project that their talent would rub off? Cabin Fever didn't do anything to make me want to watch Hostel, and now I almost definitely won't see it. I'd rather just watch a Miike.
If you like the dialogue in Clerks, check out some of the early Hal Hartley. People spent about a decade trying to catch up to his sense of humor, and he still manages to be one of the most effortlessly funny guys out there. Not to mention good.
Cube is a good movie. Too bad they made such shitty sequels.
I didn't think that much of The Killing Fields.
I really don't consider movies a waste of time. When they're done well, they're as powerful or more than any other art form; when they're done poorly or made on the production line, they tell us more about ourselves (in a sociological rather than personal/artistic sense) than pretty much any other art form. I wish there were more that were done well, but that's life.
Anybody for Greenaway?

Has anyone seen Hostel yet?....'post to be pretty gory..
I just recently saw Batman Begins...I was pretty impressed with it, especially if you compare it to the older ones.
My all time fave I watched a week ago though is Scent of a Woman. That is a great movie.

Alot of people badmouth Tarantino (sp?) however...he's original.
Stanley Kubrick was genius in my opinion.
2001 Rules
Clockwork too
Shining....brilliant.
Another...
Scarface was amazing and the book is 20 times better....although it's over 1000 pages.

I liked Hypercube, but Cube Zero was shit.
Some of my favorite movies
2001:A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Requiem For A Dream
Tetsuo
Bullet Ballet
The Lost Highway
Life Of Brian
Fight Club
Battle Royale
I saw Alone In The Dark recently(I think it's based on a video
game) and it sucked(bullets with light in them?WTF?).I also saw
The Jacket which wasn't very
good(kinda like The Butterfly Effect, this "I'll snap my fingers and travel
into time again and again" is very tiring).A greek movie I saw named
"A Dog's Dream" was the lamest David Lynch ripoff I ever saw.
Anyone seen any Tsukamoto films? The guy is one of
the best directors now I think.

how you guys feel about fellini?,i seen a couple of his films and what keeps me watching is how strange it will get, not so much that i even like it, even his earlier works. i have seen satyricon recently and i still dont know what to think
another completely wierd director is Jardowsky<i forget his first name>,my holy mountian,el topo, a couple others whose names escape me. movies so bizzare you cant turn your head, you cant leave the seat. then when its over everyone in the room starts laughing and shaking thier heads, i mean its good, but i cant explain what exactly these movies are about
this stuff is from one of my roomates collection, who really worships these kind of films. hes got the DVDs so i get to watch these movies, including the tarkovsky films, digitally mastered, it makes a world of difference to watch the dvds, especially tarkovsky, whose camerawork is highly regarded

Nope. I've only seen Kill Bill 1, but I really thought it was shoddy. To me all it is is 15% story and 85% filler material, plus the martial arts looked like shit (well, that doesn't really matter since it's bound to in a movie about sword fighting). It's one saving grace is that Uma Therman was pretty damn hot in it.
What's the second one like?

German films:
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
Fitzcarraldo
Even Dwarves Started Small
Nosferatu (both Murnau and Herzog)
M
Heart of Glass
Wings of Desire
Woyzeck
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
The American Friend
The Princess and the Warrior
Dr. Mabuse
The Blue Angel
The Blue Light
Olympia
The Triumph of the Will
The Marquise of O...
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The Golem
The Diary of a Lost Girl
Though if you're only watching it to improve in the language you may as well just find any film in German. They've made a lot of the years, and a lot of them are easily available.
Vol. 2 is pretty much the opposite of Vol. 1. I've lost most of my enthusiasm for the first one but still like certain things about the second. Less shopkeeping, more filmmaking. It's kind of a joke to call Tarantino an original, though I still like him some.

Because German can be translated into English, and has been in the case of every single one of these titles. Because I'm not pretentious enough to have memorized all of those titles in German, especially as several are best known under their English names. Because you'll be better off looking for these under their English titles. Every single film I mentioned's available on DVD, which allows you to turn the subtitling off if you don't want it.

You'd have to.
Saw Match Point yesterday. It was worth the absurd price to go see it and made up for the two uninteresting movies I saw last year following Woody and Scarlett. He made a neat little serious film without trading cinematic effect for sterile philosophizing and she continues to amaze me with how much better she understands how to be sexy on film than most actresses out there. That's partially him, too. I'd recommend it.
Now I only have The New World to see before I can get back to avoiding paying $15.50 for the pleasure of parking my car and watching a series of commercials followed eventually by a movie. Anybody else looking forward to that?

He is mentally disabled, well at least never had any education. This is a fucked up movie [and I mean fucked up] about incest, denial of God, and his adventures as Bubby kills his mother and breaks out into the streets. Some of the events are having sex with a Red Cross worker, joining a bnad and going to prison, but this movie is ALWAYS nitty gritty and watching it will make you feel dirty, I mean its explicit for no reason at all. But its good and has some messages in it.

Taxi Driver!! One of the rawest movies I've ever seen. My favourite flick of all time, no contest. The original Hellraiser is a close second. One of the few horror movies to actually have a lasting effect on me.
If you like horror/gore, here's a couple o' doozies for ya:
Guinea Pig 2: The Flowers of Flesh and Blood (the rest of the series is pretty sick too)
August Underground
August Underground's Mordum
Men Behind the Sun
Cannibal Holocaust
The most notorious "video nasties" are actually pretty tame compared to the ones listed above. Like, "I Spit on Your Grave" and "Last House on the Left". Still worth a watch though!

Many more,I acnt be fucked thinking of..
By the way,It has bugged me for many, many months.I saw this movie a while ago,and I need to know what its called. It looked like it was filmed pretty recently,Its a er another 'horror' type movie.A group of teenagers van breaks down,or maybe gets boobie trapped or something, and they are stuck in the woods. They break up into groups and like one group stays by the car and the guy gets pulled into the bushes, and the were smoking weed.Another group walks and finds a cliff I think for some reason, a group finds a house ,with heaps of cars out the front, and like picnic baskets and stuff in them, because evil fiends captured all the tourists that went by.In the house was like heaps of body parts and shit, like leather-faces den, kind off.Time for new paragraph
The bad guys were like these mutant people, like monster things. There was one crazy one,and they drove on lawnmowers i think at one stage. The good guys stole a yellow pickup also.I think,im pretty sure though im not sure this is the right movie, that they went up into a fire lookout thing, and hid there. Then the fiends came and lit the pole on fire.Thats all I can remember for now.
But I really need to know what movie it is!I have like er dreams that end up there and shit, and I want to see the movie again...Thanks for readig, and please fucking know what movie it is.

True.
Oh, and for anyone who has access to BBC4 - tune in at 10 tonight, a modern classic is being played.

I've heard that the powers that be are making a Silent Hill movie.
That would rock balls.

"Game to movie" transitions are rarely up to scratch, have you seen Doom? Fucking dreadful...Resident Evil too...great opportunities for great stories, and they cock it up every time. Hopefully they'll do Silent Hill justice...it'd be nice to see a break in the trend of crapness. Silent Hill might just be strong enough as it is to survive the onslaught of some 2-bit director's vision. I remember playing the first game on the PS1, fucking atmospheric!
Do you know off hand who'll be in it? Please GOD don't let it be the Rock...*shudders*

Really?I hoped it would be good.
I heard that they will do a Hitman movie with Vin Diesel,
that will be interesting.
What about your favorite directors?
I'd say
Stanley Kubrick
David Lynch
Shinya Tsukamoto

Are you talking about Hostel? If so, I plan on seeing it but I'm not going to take your word for it, I've heard much better things.
I just watched Donnie Darko last night, one of my favorites.

"Based on true events" I believe is read upon the starting of the film, not "everything you see is absolute truth", if you expect a totally accurate war film then expect away, Band Of Brothers still had a few things out of place.
